Chapter 3

Julian sent the preliminary report on Friday morning at 7:14 AM.

I was already at my desk when it came through. I had a partner call at eight and a pitch meeting at ten. My coffee was hot. The skyline outside was sharp and gray.

I opened the file.

Three years of transfers. Partial review only — Julian had flagged that clearly at the top. But even partial, the numbers were already in six figures. Column after column of outflows from our joint accounts, each one labeled with the kind of language that belonged in a corporate expense report.

Pet care stipend. Emotional wellness support. Professional development assistance. Transitional housing facilitation.

Every single one traced back to accounts associated with Luciana Foster.

I read the whole thing twice. My coffee went cold. I didn't notice.

Then I forwarded it to Victoria with four words: Prepare for full recovery.

I closed the file. Straightened my notepad. Took the partner call at eight.

My voice didn't waver once.

---

I found the breeder through a referral from a colleague who showed cats competitively. Her name was Margaret Ellison. She operated out of Greenwich, Connecticut, and her Ragdolls had won more ribbons than I cared to count. Long-haired. Blue-eyed. Extraordinarily fluffy.

The breed with the highest commercially available dander output. I had confirmed that detail independently before I called her.

Margaret was delighted to hear from me. She had ten adults available — retired show cats, she explained, which meant they were socialized, calm, and fully vaccinated. I told her I'd take all of them. She paused for exactly two seconds before she said, wonderful.

I arranged delivery for the following Tuesday. Damien had back-to-back client meetings until six. I had a four-hour window.

I also ordered premium litter systems, automatic feeders, a white-noise machine, and two large cat trees. Everything arrived in the same delivery window. The building's service elevator was reserved. I tipped the delivery team well.

Damien's belongings — suits, shoes, his watch box, his chargers, the novel he'd been reading for three months — I moved to the guest room with the same efficiency I applied to portfolio restructuring. Folded. Organized. Nothing missing. Nothing damaged.

I made the guest room bed with fresh sheets.

Then I went back to the master bedroom and opened the door.

Ten Ragdolls looked up at me from various positions around the room. One was already on the pillow. Two were investigating the curtains. The rest were settling in with the unhurried confidence of animals who understood they were exactly where they were supposed to be.

I stood in the doorway for a moment.

Then I closed the door and went to make dinner.

---

Damien came home at 6:40.

I heard him in the foyer — the familiar sound of his keys, his jacket on the hook, his shoes hitting the mat. Then silence. He'd noticed the guest room door was open. He'd noticed his shoes weren't where he left them.

His footsteps came down the hall.

"Claire."

I was at the stove. I turned around. "Hey. How were the meetings?"

He was looking past me toward the hallway. "Why are my things in the guest room?"

"I'm having the master bedroom decontaminated," I said. I kept my voice the way I kept everything these days — level, clean, informative. "The adjacent areas needed deep allergen remediation. It's going to take a few weeks."

He blinked. "Allergen remediation."

"Yes."

"For what?"

"I adopted some cats," I said. "For my emotional wellness."

The phrase landed in the room and sat there.

I watched something move across his face. Confusion, mostly. A small crease between his brows. He was trying to find the angle, the subtext, the hidden argument. That was the thing about Damien — he always assumed my silences meant something was brewing beneath the surface. He was usually right. He just never knew what.

"Cats," he said.

"Ragdolls. Ten of them." I turned back to the stove. "The master bedroom will be off-limits while I get them settled. The guest room is fully set up for you. I put everything where you'd find it."

"Claire, I'm allergic to cats."

"I know," I said. "That's why I'm keeping them in the master bedroom. You'll be perfectly comfortable in the guest room. The air filtration in there is excellent."

Another silence. Longer this time.

"This is a lot," he said finally. "Can we talk about this?"

"Of course." I plated the pasta and set his portion on the counter. "But dinner's ready. We can talk after."

He stood there for another moment. Then he sat down.

He ate. I ate. We talked about his meetings. I told him about a fund we were closing next week. He mentioned the kitchen backsplash again — maybe the white subway tile after all.

I said that sounded fine.

He relaxed by degrees, the way he always did when I didn't push. He read my stillness as acceptance. My calm as resolution. He had always mistaken my self-containment for distance, and my distance for forgiveness.

He thought this was a phase.

I let him think it.

The cats were very quiet behind the closed door. I could hear almost nothing.

Almost.
