Chapter 4

New York’s classical music circle is tiny. It thrives on gossip. It didn't take long for the stories to start circulating.

Beckett and Yasmin moved fast.

They attended cocktail parties, faculty dinners, and post-rehearsal drinks near Lincoln Center. Yasmin wore soft cashmere and delicate pearl earrings. She perfected the look of an innocent woman caught in an unfortunate mess.

At a dinner for the Philharmonic's young patrons, someone brought up my name. A cellist friend from my Juilliard days told me about it later.

Yasmin had simply lowered her eyes and sighed softly.

"It's just so heartbreaking," Yasmin had told the table, her voice trembling with gentle sympathy. "Everly is... brittle. She's been out of the scene for so long. She became a housewife, and now she can't accept that Beckett found an artistic equal. She feels threatened."

Beckett had reached across the table to squeeze Yasmin’s hand. He gave the room a tired, noble smile.

"Everly has always struggled with deep insecurity," Beckett added. He shook his head, looking like a devoted husband who had suffered in silence. "She projects her frustrations onto everyone around her. I only want what’s best for her. Truly. I just hope she gets the professional help she needs."

The people at the table nodded. They drank their wine and agreed.

Of course they did.

To them, I was just the quiet woman who stood by the coat rack at Beckett’s recitals. I was the one who refilled their wine glasses at our holiday parties and baked the tarts. They never asked about my violin. They never cared to know that I graduated at the top of my class.

It was easy to believe I was crazy. It was much easier than admitting they had ignored a real musician for ten years.

Yasmin was pretty. She laughed at their jokes. She made Beckett look important. That was all that mattered to them.

***

On Tuesday afternoon, Yasmin’s management made their big announcement.

Her debut solo concert was officially set at a prestigious hall on the Upper East Side. The marketing pushed her as a visionary. A rare, poetic genius finally stepping into the light.

The press release arrived in my inbox at four o'clock. An old classmate had forwarded it with a single question mark: *Is this real?*

I stood at the kitchen island in the brownstone. The house was quiet. My black coffee sat next to my laptop, cold and untouched.

I scrolled down to the program list.

There it was.

Right in the center of the bill, listed as the evening's main event:

*Song of the Valley: A World Premiere.*

*Composed by Yasmin Lopez.*

My breath caught in my throat.

It was my song.

I wrote that piece when I was twenty-two, sitting on a wooden porch during a summer storm in the Berkshires. I had written every bar by hand in my leather notebook. I poured every bit of my youthful hope into that melody. I had written it for Beckett. I gave it to him like a piece of my own soul.

Now, Yasmin was claiming she created it.

I clicked on the digital program notes. They were signed by Beckett Gray.

His words jumped off the screen:

*“This composition is a rare triumph. In 'Song of the Valley,' Miss Lopez displays a profound, singular emotional intelligence that few artists ever achieve. It is a work of breathtaking honesty, born from a spirit entirely free of petty vanity.”*

I stared at his signature.

He didn't just hand her my music. He built an altar for her on top of it. He took the most intimate gift I had ever given him, wiped my name off the page, and handed it to his mistress so the world could applaud her brilliance.

I set the phone down on the cold marble counter.

My chest was completely still.

I looked down at my left hand. I curled my fingers inward, pressing the pads hard against my palm. One. Two. Three.

I felt the pulse under the skin. Firm, steady, and warm.

The phantom chill of the blizzard was gone. The frostbite that took my youth was gone. There was no pain left to paralyze me. Only fire.

I stood motionless in the empty kitchen.

The grandfather clock ticked in the corner. Ten seconds passed. Twenty. Thirty.

Forty seconds of pure, unbroken silence.

I didn't scream. I didn't smash Beckett’s leftover coffee mug. I didn't waste a single drop of rage on an empty room.

Rage without precision was just noise. And I was done making noise.

I picked up the phone. I opened my message thread with Eleanor Whitfield.

My fingers moved smoothly over the screen.

*Practice moved to six AM tomorrow. I need the extra hour.*

A few seconds later, Eleanor replied with two words:

*Be sharp.*

I put the phone in my pocket. I walked into the parlor, picked up my violin case, and clicked the locks open.
