Chapter 4

The safety deposit box is at a First Republic branch on Madison Avenue. I opened it the week after I paid off Cooper's debt—five years ago, before the wedding, before Layton, before any of this. I didn't tell Cooper it existed. I don't know exactly why. Some quiet instinct. The same one that made me keep copies of every contract I ever signed, every incorporation document, every wire transfer receipt.

The same instinct that kept me alive in this city when I had nothing but a business plan and a refusal to quit.

I take a car to the branch on a Wednesday morning. The box is exactly where I left it. Inside: the original promissory notes, still crisp, still bearing the signatures of men whose names I will not say out loud in polite company. The men who broke three of Cooper's ribs in a parking garage and would have broken more.

I carried those notes out of that garage myself. I negotiated the payoff myself. I wrote the check myself.

I set the notes on the table in front of Rachel that afternoon.

She looks at them for a long moment. Then she looks at me.

"Marcus already ran the numbers," I tell her. "Five years of compounding at their rate. It's two point one million now."

Rachel picks up her pen. "I'll have the reassignment documents ready by Friday."

"Thursday," I say.

She doesn't argue.

---

The invitation to Cooper's press event arrives in my inbox on a Thursday. He didn't send it to me personally—why would he? I'm not supposed to be a factor anymore. It comes through a board contact, forwarded without comment, a single line at the bottom: *Thought you should see this.*

The Mandarin Oriental. Friday afternoon. Two hundred guests. *A Bold New Chapter: Strategic Leadership and the Future of Andrews Group.*

I read the agenda twice.

Forty percent of company shares. Violet Mendoza. Chief Strategy Officer.

He's going to stand in front of cameras and hand her pieces of something I built with my own hands, my own sleepless years, my own failing heart.

I close the laptop.

I go to the window and look at the park for a long time. The trees are bare. The sky is the color of old pewter. Down on the street, people move fast with their heads down, the way New Yorkers do when the cold has finally arrived and there's no pretending otherwise.

I go back to the desk. I open the evidence package one final time and read through every page.

Hotel receipts. Venmo logs. Security footage timestamps. The incorporation documents with only my signature on the founding line. The promissory notes, now reassigned. The divorce filing Rachel has ready to serve at a moment of my choosing.

Everything in order. Every piece exactly where it needs to be.

I close the folder.

---

I call Diana at nine.

She picks up on the second ring. I can hear Boston in the background—her apartment, the particular quiet of a life that was never complicated by the choices I made.

"Hey," she says. Just that.

"Hey."

A pause. Then: "You okay?"

I think about that question. I think about what okay means right now, in this hotel suite, the night before I walk into a room full of cameras and dismantle the life Cooper has been building on the bones of mine.

"No," I say. "But I'm ready."

Diana is quiet for a moment. Then: "I'll be there in three hours."

"You don't have to—"

"I know," she says. "I'll be there in three hours."

She doesn't say *I told you so.* She never does. That's the thing about Diana—she warned me about Cooper five years ago, stood in my kitchen with that careful look on her face and said *Savannah, I just want you to be sure,* and I told her I was sure, and she nodded and helped me address the wedding invitations anyway. That's who she is.

She arrives at midnight with two coffees from the all-night place on Lexington and no luggage except a small bag she clearly packed in ten minutes. She sits in the chair across from me and tucks her feet under her and wraps both hands around her cup.

We don't talk about Cooper. We don't talk about Layton. We don't talk about the press conference or the documents or the two point one million dollars or any of it.

We talk about nothing. Her neighbor's terrible cat. A book she's been meaning to read. The way the city looks different from up high when it rains.

Around two in the morning, the coffee goes cold and the conversation runs out and we just sit there in the quiet of the suite, the city glittering beyond the glass, both of us awake.

I look at my sister's face—familiar, steady, the one constant in my life that never cost me anything—and I feel something loosen in my chest. Not grief. Not anger.

Just the simple, almost forgotten sensation of not being alone.

"Thank you," I say.

Diana shakes her head. "Don't thank me. Just go in there tomorrow and burn it down."

I almost smile.

Almost.

Tomorrow I will put on a black Valentino suit and walk into the Mandarin Oriental and take back everything that was ever mine.

Tonight, I let my sister sit with me in the dark.
