Chapter 2

I called Titan Gray at 9:47 on a Tuesday morning.

I'd memorized his private number from a business card I found in Cullen's jacket pocket two years ago. I never thought I'd use it. Now I dialed it like I was ordering takeout.

He picked up on the second ring. 'Gray.'

'Mr. Gray.' My voice was flat. Steady. 'This is Marlee. Your daughter-in-law. I'd like to discuss a transaction.'

A pause. Just one beat. 'Go ahead.'

No surprise. No warmth. I respected that.

'I have documentation of your son's affair with Sasha Reyes,' I said. 'Explicit messages. Photographs. Audio recordings. Enough to make Page Six for a week straight. Enough to rattle your investors before the IPO closes.'

Another pause. Longer this time. I could hear him breathing.

'What do you want?'

'A hundred million dollars. Paid in tranches to an offshore account. A clean divorce. No contested assets, no delays, no family attorneys playing games.' I kept my eyes on the kitchen wall. The paint was chipping near the window frame. I'd been meaning to fix that for two years. 'In exchange, you get silence. Permanent silence. The scandal disappears. Your stock price stays intact.'

He didn't ask me to repeat myself. He didn't threaten me. He just said, 'I'll have my attorney contact your representative by morning.'

'Her name is Delia Marsh,' I said. 'She's expecting the call.'

I hung up.

I stood in the kitchen for a long time after that. The refrigerator hummed. Somewhere outside, a car horn blared. I pressed my thumb against my grandmother's cameo brooch, pinned inside my collar where no one could see it, and felt the raised edge of the carved silhouette under my fingertip.

I didn't cry. There was nothing left to cry about.

---

Cullen came home that evening with tulips.

Pink ones. My favorite. He held them out with a smile that didn't quite reach his eyes, and said he'd booked us a table at the Italian place in the West Village — the one we went to on our second anniversary, back when we had to split the pasta because we couldn't afford two entrees.

'I've been distracted lately,' he said. 'Work stuff. I'm sorry, Marlee.'

I took the tulips. I smiled. 'It's okay.'

And then, over wine I barely touched, he suggested we move into the Gray family mansion on the Upper East Side.

'It makes sense,' he said, swirling his glass. 'I'm over there for meetings half the week anyway. And the space — you'd have room for a studio. You could sketch again. You always used to sketch.'

I looked at him across the candlelight. His jaw. The small scar above his eyebrow from the night Paulina's thugs found us outside my dorm. I used to trace it with my finger when he was asleep.

'That sounds nice,' I said.

His shoulders dropped half an inch. Relief.

I refilled my water glass and asked him about his day.

---

Packing the Williamsburg apartment took three days.

I folded everything carefully. Cullen's books. The mismatched mugs we'd collected from street fairs. The quilt his mother sent us that first winter, when the radiator broke and we slept in our coats.

I came to the photo wall last.

Seven years of us, pinned up in a grid. Cullen at twenty-six, grinning in front of a food cart in the rain. The two of us at my college graduation, his arm around my shoulders, my cap crooked. Our wedding photo in the center — me in ivory silk, him in the gray suit he'd saved up for, both of us laughing at something just off-camera.

I touched each frame. Just once. Fingertips to glass.

Then I packed them all into a box and sealed it shut.

The ceramic couple figurines went in last. We'd bought them at a street market in Brooklyn on our first anniversary, from an old man who painted them by hand. Five dollars each. Cullen had laughed and said they looked nothing like us. I'd said I didn't care.

I set them on top of the folded quilt and closed the box.

---

The Gray mansion was everything Williamsburg wasn't. High ceilings. Staff who moved silently through marble hallways. A guest suite that was larger than our entire first apartment.

I smiled at the right moments. I thanked the housekeeper by name. I sat at the family dinner table and passed the bread basket and asked Titan about his week.

He looked at me once, across the length of the table, with those flat gray eyes. I held his gaze for exactly two seconds, then looked away.

We understood each other perfectly.

At night, I took out the small sketchbook I kept inside my coat lining and drew by the window. Silhouettes. Fabric lines. The shape of something I couldn't name yet but could almost see.

In the morning, I took the subway to a library in the East Village and checked my encrypted files on their public terminal. Delia had confirmed the first tranche paperwork was in motion. The offshore account was active.

I closed the browser, cleared the history, and walked back out into the cold.

I had everything I needed. Now I just had to wait.
