Chapter 4

The terminal floor was cold under my knees. Hard tile that pressed into bone. Silas's hand in mine was damp and limp. His breathing came in short, shallow gasps that didn't sound like enough air.

Genevieve's fingers stayed pressed to his neck. Her lips moved silently. Counting.

The crowd had stopped laughing. But they still didn't move. Just stood there with their phones up. Recording. Watching an old man die.

"Someone help us," I said again. My voice was hoarse. Broken. "Please."

A woman near the front shook her head and turned away.

I pressed Silas's hand to my cheek. His skin was cold.

Then I heard it. A voice from the back. Firm. Steady.

"Let me through."

The crowd shifted. Reluctant. A man pushed past shoulders and elbows. He was older, maybe seventy, with silver hair and a weathered face. He wore a cardigan and carried a worn leather briefcase.

He dropped to his knees beside us without hesitation.

"I'm Dr. Leonard Hale," he said. His voice was calm. The kind of calm that came from years of emergencies. "Retired cardiologist. May I?"

Genevieve's eyes met his. She nodded once.

Dr. Hale's fingers went to Silas's neck. He checked the pulse. Then he leaned close and listened to his breathing.

"Cardiac episode," he said. "Likely angina. Does he have nitroglycerin?"

"We couldn't find it," I said. My voice cracked.

Dr. Hale reached into his jacket pocket and pulled out a small brown bottle. He opened it with steady hands and shook out a tiny white tablet.

"Under the tongue," he said to Genevieve.

She took it from him and lifted Silas's head gently. Her fingers were shaking now. Just slightly. She placed the tablet under his tongue.

We waited.

The terminal was silent. Even the phones had lowered.

Silas's breathing changed. Still shallow, but steadier. Less ragged.

Dr. Hale kept his fingers on Silas's pulse. "There we go," he said quietly. "That's better."

I squeezed Silas's hand. Tears ran down my face. I didn't try to stop them.

Genevieve's hand covered mine. Her grip was tight. Anchoring.

Dr. Hale looked up at the crowd. His face was calm, but his voice carried an edge. "Someone should have called 911 ten minutes ago."

No one answered.

He pulled out his own phone and dialed. "Yes, I need an ambulance at JFK International, Terminal Four. Elderly male, cardiac episode, stabilized with nitroglycerin but needs transport."

He stayed on his knees beside Silas. Monitoring. His hand never left Silas's wrist.

I looked at him. At this stranger who had pushed through a hostile crowd when no one else would.

"Thank you," I whispered.

He met my eyes. His gaze was kind. "You don't need to thank me for being decent."

But I did. Because decency had been so rare in the last twenty minutes that it felt like a miracle.

Silas's eyes fluttered open. Just barely. He looked at Genevieve. Then at me.

"Still here," he murmured.

Genevieve's face crumpled for just a second. Then she smoothed it back into composure. "Yes, you stubborn man. You're still here."

I heard footsteps behind me. Fast. Heavy.

A voice I knew better than my own.

"What the hell is going on?"

I turned.

Cain was pushing through the crowd. His face was flushed. His jacket was open. He looked frantic.

Relief hit me so hard I almost collapsed.

He was here. He was finally here. He would fix this. He would tell them.

I let go of Silas's hand and stood. My legs shook. I moved toward Cain.

"Cain," I said. My voice broke on his name. "Cain, thank God. Your dad—he collapsed. And this woman, she—"

Cain walked past me.

He didn't look at me. Didn't slow down.

He went straight to Solana.

His arm went around her shoulders. He pulled her against his side.

"Are you okay?" he asked her. His voice was soft. Concerned.

Solana leaned into him. "She attacked me. She's been stalking you for months. I had to confront her."

Cain's jaw tightened. He looked at the crowd. At the phones. At the circle of strangers.

Then he looked at me.

His eyes were flat. Cold. Like he was looking at a stranger.

"I don't know who you are," he said.

The words didn't make sense. I blinked. Shook my head.

"Cain," I said. I stepped toward him. My hand reached for his arm. "It's me. It's Elliott. I'm your wife."

He pulled his arm back. Away from my touch.

"I've never seen you before in my life," he said.

The terminal tilted. The floor wasn't steady anymore.

I stared at him. At the man I'd loved for five years. The man I'd married. The man who'd kissed me goodbye this morning.

"Cain," I whispered. "Please."

He turned to Solana. His hand cupped her face. "I'm so sorry you had to deal with this."

She pressed her face into his chest.

I stood there. Three feet away from my husband. And he looked at me like I was nothing.

Behind me, on the floor, Silas made a sound. Low and rough.

Genevieve's voice was very quiet. Very cold.

"Cain," she said. "Look at your father."

Cain glanced over. His face didn't change.

"He'll be fine," he said. "He's dramatic."

Then he turned back to Solana.

And something inside me stopped breaking.

It just went quiet.

I looked at Cain. At Solana. At Shay standing silent at the edge of the crowd.

I looked at the phones. The faces. The strangers who had watched an old man nearly die and done nothing.

And I stopped begging.

I turned around. Walked back to Silas and Genevieve. Knelt beside them on the cold tile.

Dr. Hale was still there. Still monitoring.

I took Silas's hand again.

Genevieve's eyes met mine. There was something new in them now. Something hard and sharp and absolutely certain.

"We will handle this," she said quietly.

I nodded.

Behind us, Cain was murmuring something to Solana. Soothing her.

I didn't look back.
