Chapter 4

Two weeks after the funeral, the bills stopped coming. My mother’s ICU care had cost a fortune over eighteen months. I paid for it all, every single cent. But when I logged into my bank portal on a Tuesday morning, the numbers were wrong.

The massive debt was wiped from my personal ledger. My joint accounts with Dorian were locked. A gray padlock icon sat next to my checking balance.

I picked up my phone and called the bank.

“I'm sorry, Mrs. Spencer,” the representative said. Her voice was thin and metallic. “The account structure was modified. All transfers now require Mr. Spencer's direct approval.”

“When did this happen?” I asked. My voice was completely flat.

“Three days ago. He authorized the transfer of the medical debts to a holding company he controls.”

I hung up. I didn't throw the phone. I didn't cry. My right leg throbbed, a dull, heavy burn. I rubbed my thigh slowly. I sat at my desk for forty-eight hours. I went to work. I drank my coffee. I didn't say a word to Dorian. I needed to map the exact dimensions of the trap before I let him know I was in it. He was building a wall around me, brick by brick. I had to see how high it went.

On Thursday night, I sat across from him at our long dining table. The room was quiet. The only sound was the clink of his silver fork against the porcelain plate. He looked up at me. He knew I knew.

He wiped his mouth with a linen napkin. He reached into his leather briefcase beside his chair and pulled out a thick manila folder. He slid it across the polished mahogany table. It stopped right in front of my plate.

“Marcus Webb,” Dorian said smoothly.

I stared at the name on the tab. My stomach turned over. Marcus Webb was a securities fraudster. He was a corrupt, ruthless man who had bankrupted dozens of families. I had spent two years privately documenting his dirty deals. Now, he was facing a massive public trial.

“What about him?” I asked.

“He needs defense counsel,” Dorian said. He leaned back in his chair. “He needs someone with a spotless reputation. Someone the public trusts implicitly. He needs you, Savannah.”

I looked at my husband. He wasn't asking.

“I represent betrayed women,” I said softly. “I don't defend financial predators. My whole career is built on taking down men like him.”

“You do now,” Dorian replied. His voice was calm. It was the exact tone he used to close hostile real estate takeovers. “If you refuse, I will call in your mother's medical debts tomorrow morning. I will freeze our joint accounts permanently. And the Spencer Group will withdraw its financial backing from your law firm.”

The room felt suddenly freezing. I had thirty employees. I had a massive office lease in Manhattan. I had never fully realized how deeply his money was woven into the foundation of my firm. He wasn't just threatening me. He was threatening my entire staff. He was holding my dead mother's estate hostage.

He wanted me to stand on live television and defend a monster. He wanted to humiliate me in front of the women who called me their champion. He wanted to break my spine in public.

I kept my hands flat in my lap. I pressed my thumb hard against the inside of my wrist. I pushed until the pulse beat painfully against my nail.

“I need twenty-four hours,” I said.

Dorian smiled thinly. It was a look of pure, absolute victory. “Take your time, Savannah. We both know what you'll decide.”

I didn't sleep that night. I locked myself in my study. I pulled out every ledger. I opened every legal database. I ran the numbers until my eyes burned. I looked for a loophole. I searched for a clean exit that wouldn't bankrupt my firm or destroy my mother's estate.

There was nothing. The cage was perfectly built.

At midnight, I picked up my phone and called my senior associate. I paced the floor, my cane clicking loudly on the hardwood.

“Let's say we lose our primary backer,” I said into the phone. “Hypothetically. How long can we make payroll?”

“Two weeks,” she replied, her voice thick with sleep. “Maybe three if we drain the emergency reserves. Why? Is something wrong?”

“No,” I lied smoothly. “Just running quarterly projections. Go back to sleep.”

I hung up. I stood by the window and looked out at the Manhattan skyline. It was two in the morning. The city was dark and cold. The fire in my leg was blinding, but I welcomed it. It kept me sharp. It reminded me that I was still alive.

I walked back to my desk. I opened my personal, encrypted journal on my laptop. It wasn't my work file. It was the only place I told the absolute truth.

I typed out the events of the day. I documented the extortion. I detailed the threat to my firm. Then, I hit enter twice. I stared at the blinking cursor.

My husband had left me to be beaten. He had covered up my mother's murder. Now, he was forcing me to burn my own reputation to the ground. I had to take the case. I had to stand in front of the cameras and lie for a man I despised. But as I sat in the dark, the fear finally vanished. It was replaced by something cold, hard, and permanent.

I put my fingers on the keys and typed one final line.

*This is the last thing he will ever take from me.*

I closed the laptop. The room went pitch black. I was ready.
