Chapter 1

The morning after our wedding at The Pierre, I woke up early. We hadn’t even filed our marriage license yet. That was scheduled for Monday.

I bought warm croissants from the bakery downstairs and drove to Gregory’s Tribeca penthouse. Seven years studying design in Paris was finally behind me. I was home. I was ready to start our life together.

I used my key, stepped inside, and smelled fresh coffee.

"Gregory?" I called out, setting the bag on the marble island.

A woman walked out of the kitchen.

She wore Gregory’s oversized navy silk robe. Her feet were bare. She held a ceramic mug with both hands, blowing gently across the surface.

I stopped breathing.

It was like looking into a funhouse mirror. She had my exact frame. My long, dark brown hair. Even the small mole near her left cheekbone.

"You must be Sasha," she said. Her voice was sweet and slow.

Before I could speak, Gregory stepped into the hall. He wore sweatpants, drying his neck with a towel. He saw me, but he didn't look startled. His eyes stayed cool and steady.

"You're up early," he said.

"Who is this?" My voice shook.

"This is Dior," he said easily. He walked over, took her mug, and drank from it. "Don't make a scene, Sasha. You were gone for seven years. A man has needs. Dior kept me company. She’s a comfort."

"A comfort?" The word felt like acid on my tongue. "We just got married yesterday."

"And you're the wife," Gregory said. He shrugged. "Dior knows her place. You have your position, and she has hers. Nothing has to change."

Dior gave me a tiny, pitying smile.

My stomach churned. He hadn't just cheated on me while I was in France. He had spent years shaping a living, breathing doll to look just like me.

"We haven't filed the license," I whispered. My fists clenched so hard my fingernails bit into my palms. "And we never will. It's over, Gregory."

His expression darkened. "Think carefully about what you’re doing, Sasha."

I turned around, walked out the front door, and called my lawyer before I even hit the lobby.

Forty-eight hours later, the retaliation started.

First came an email from our bank. All Larson family business accounts were frozen pending an audit backed by the Austin Group. Then our credit line was cut off.

Then my phone rang. It was Dr. Marcus Webb from Mount Sinai.

"Ms. Larson?" Dr. Webb’s tone was tense. "I’m calling about your mother’s heart valve replacement scheduled for Thursday. The private foundation underwriting the surgical costs just pulled their grant. Without payment, hospital policy requires us to postpone indefinitely."

My chest seized. Gregory.

I hung up and dialed his private number. He answered on the second ring.

"Is Robin's room comfortable?" Gregory asked. His voice was smooth, like warm honey. "I hear Mount Sinai has the best views of the park."

"You monster," I choked out. "She has severe valve stenosis. She’ll die without that surgery!"

"Then you shouldn't have been so careless with our marriage, Sasha," he replied. "Here is my offer. Tomorrow night is the Austin Foundation charity gala at The St. Regis. Come. Stand in front of our guests and apologize to Dior for your disrespect. When you do, the hospital gets the wire transfer."

"Apologize to your mistress?"

"To my guest," he corrected coldly. "You have until tomorrow night. Or your mother leaves the hospital in a bag."

He hung up.

My mother never heard that call, but she saw my face. She saw the stack of unpaid bills and the sudden panic in my eyes. An hour later, she collapsed on our living room floor, clutching her chest.

I rode in the back of the ambulance, holding her cold, limp hand.

By midnight, she was in the ICU, hooked to a maze of monitors. Dr. Webb met me outside the double doors. His eyes were shadowed with fatigue.

"Her vitals are failing, Sasha," he told me quietly. "She doesn't have weeks. She might not have days. If she doesn't get that surgery this week, her heart will simply stop."

I stood alone in the hallway. The fluorescent lights buzzed overhead. The smell of bleach and rubbing alcohol burned my throat. I had no money. No relatives to lean on. No time left.

I pulled out my phone and sent Gregory three words: *I'll be there.*

The next afternoon, a courier knocked on the door of my childhood apartment.

He handed me a flat cardboard box. Inside was a plain, dull beige cocktail dress. It looked cheap, shapeless, and completely modest. My luggage from Paris—filled with my own custom gowns—had never arrived. Gregory’s people had intercepted the delivery.

A handwritten note rested on the fabric:

*Dress appropriately for someone who should be grateful.*

I stared at the paper until the letters blurred.

I didn't cry. Tears wouldn't save my mother.

I carried the ugly dress into my bedroom and hung it on the door. Then I walked to my dresser and picked up a small velvet pouch. Inside was a carved jade pendant on a delicate gold chain. It was the last thing my grandmother gave me before she passed away.

I wrapped the cool, smooth stone tightly in my hand.

I closed my eyes, lay down on the mattress, and waited for the night to come.
