Chapter 5

I came back from detention and I unpacked my bag and I showered for a long time.

Then I put on a dress and went down to dinner.

Dane was already at the table. He didn't look up when I sat down. The staff served the first course. We ate. He talked about a development deal in Midtown. I asked one question at the right moment. He answered. The candles burned low.

Nobody watching would have seen anything wrong.

That was the point.

I called Sylvia the next morning from the back of a car, while the driver sat three feet away behind a partition that meant nothing.

"He has a cathedral visit Thursday," I said. "Nylah's running a health scare. He'll be distracted and he'll want me gone quickly."

"How many documents do you need to bury it?"

"Three forms. Foundation fiscal filings. Real ones — I want them to be real. Just the fourth document in the stack."

A pause. "I'll have everything ready by Wednesday night."

I hung up. I watched the city go past the window. I thought about nothing in particular.

I was very good at that now.

---

Wednesday night I went to the hospital.

Not my mother's floor. There was nothing on my mother's floor anymore. There hadn't been for over a month.

I took the elevator to the private ICU. The night nurse at the station knew my face by now. She nodded and didn't stop me.

Mrs. Rivera's room was quiet. It was always quiet. The machines kept their steady rhythms and the light was low and the city pressed against the window in a smear of orange and white.

I sat in the chair beside her bed. I opened the book.

We were on the last chapter. I had been rationing the pages for three weeks — a few at a time, slow, the way you eat something when you know it's the last of it. Tonight I read all the way to the end. My voice was steady. I didn't rush.

When I finished I set the book on the bedside table and I didn't pick it back up.

I took her hand. It was cool and still, the way it always was. I held it anyway.

"Someone loved you," I said. "I want you to know that."

The machines answered. The city pressed against the glass.

I stayed another few minutes. Then I stood. I smoothed the blanket at her shoulder the way I always did. I looked at her face — the quiet, absent face of a woman who had been left alone in a room for years, kept alive for reasons that had nothing to do with love.

I left the book on the table. I didn't take it with me.

I walked out.

---

Thursday. St. Patrick's.

I wore the charcoal blazer. Professional. Unhurried. I carried the slim portfolio Sylvia had messengered to me that morning and I walked up the cathedral steps like I had an appointment, which I did.

Dane was near the votive candles. Of course he was. The light caught the side of his face in gold and shadow and for one second — just one — I saw the man from the frat party, the man at City Hall, the man who had whispered a vow I had believed with everything I had.

Then he turned and saw me and his expression went flat with irritation.

"What are you doing here?"

"The Foundation's fiscal year closes tomorrow," I said. I kept my voice the way I kept everything now — even, contained, giving nothing. "Your signature is required on three financial forms before midnight. Legal flagged it this morning."

He looked at me. Then he looked back toward the candles — toward wherever Nylah was waiting for his return, her manufactured crisis requiring his devoted attention.

"Now?"

"It won't take two minutes."

He exhaled through his nose. He held out his hand.

I opened the portfolio. I laid the documents on the narrow shelf of the pew in front of him, fanned slightly so the pages were accessible. Foundation letterhead. Real numbers. Real filings. And the fourth document, clean and quiet, tucked between the third and a blank cover sheet.

I held out the pen.

He took it. He signed the first page without looking. The second. The third. The fourth — a single signature line, his name in full, the date.

He handed the pen back.

"Anything else?"

"No," I said. "That's everything."

I collected the documents. I closed the portfolio. I clicked the pen once and slid it into the side pocket.

"Thank you," I said.

The same tone I would use to thank a parking attendant. The same tone I had been using for months on everything — dinner reservations, elevator operators, the man who had just signed away our marriage without reading a single word.

I walked back up the aisle. My heels were quiet on the stone. The candles threw long shadows across the nave. Somewhere behind me, Dane was already turning back toward the light.

I pushed open the cathedral door.

The cold air hit my face. The city opened up in front of me — gray sky, yellow cabs, the ordinary roar of a Thursday afternoon.

In the portfolio under my arm, forty-three pages were already done.

I walked down the steps and didn't look back.
