Chapter 1

The wagyu steak was cold. The candles on the dining table had burned down to stubs, leaving puddles of wax on the expensive linen. I sat alone in our Manhattan penthouse and stared at the grandfather clock. It was 11:30 PM. Our fifth wedding anniversary was almost over.

I picked up my phone. No texts from Gavin. No missed calls. I told myself he was just busy. Edwards & Co. was launching a new quarter. He was the CEO. But I was the one who built the company. I was the Wharton-trained CFO who funded it with my own money. I named it after him as a gift. I spent years smiling at brutal client dinners and working sleepless nights to keep us afloat.

A notification popped up on my screen. An alert from TMZ. I tapped it.

The photo loaded, and the air left my lungs.

It was Gavin. He was walking into The Plaza Hotel. His hand rested low on the waist of a young woman in a red silk dress. I zoomed in. It was Salma Boyd, his twenty-four-year-old executive assistant. Around her neck was the limited-edition Cartier necklace I thought he had bought for our anniversary.

My chest tightened. A loud buzzing sound filled my ears. It wasn't just heartbreak. It was the familiar, terrifying drop of my bipolar disorder. The chronic stress of building his empire had broken my brain years ago. Now, the betrayal was pulling the trigger.

The room spun. I tried to stand up, but my legs gave out. I hit the cold marble floor hard. The darkness of a severe depressive crash pulled me under. It felt like heavy water filling my lungs. My hands shook violently. I couldn't control my own body. I dragged myself across the floor to the kitchen counter. I reached up, grabbed my phone, and dialed 911.

"Help," I gasped. "I can't breathe."

The next hour was a blur. Sirens wailed loudly. Red lights flashed against the rain-streaked windows of the ambulance. The paramedics shouted numbers. They rushed me through the doors of Mount Sinai.

I woke up to the steady beep of a heart monitor. The hospital room was bright. It smelled like bleach and sterile cotton. I blinked against the harsh fluorescent lights.

A man stood near the door. He wore a sharp, dark suit. For a second, I thought it was Gavin. But the shoulders were broader. The posture was quieter.

He turned around. My breath caught in my throat.

"Julien?" I whispered.

Julien Silva. My college sweetheart from Harvard. The man I loved before his old-money family decided a scholarship girl wasn't good enough for him. He was a venture capital mogul now. He looked older, stronger, but his dark eyes held the same steady warmth.

He walked over to my bed. "I was visiting a partner on this floor," he said softly. "I saw them bring you in. Are you okay, Indie?"

He didn't look at me with pity. He just looked at me. I felt a tear slip down my cheek. I nodded slowly. Julien pulled up a chair and sat down. He didn't ask probing questions. He didn't tell me to calm down. He just reached out and gently held my hand. His grip was firm and grounding. His thumb brushed over my knuckles. For the first time all night, I felt my heartbeat slow down.

"You're safe," he murmured.

Then, the door flew open. It hit the wall with a loud smack.

Gavin marched in. His tie was loose. His hair was slightly messy. He smelled like expensive scotch and hotel soap.

He stopped and glared at Julien. His jaw clenched. "Who the hell are you?"

Julien stood up slowly. He didn't drop my hand right away. He looked at Gavin with total calm. "A friend."

"Get out," Gavin snapped. He pointed at the door.

Julien looked down at me. I gave him a tiny nod. Julien squeezed my fingers once, a silent promise, then walked past Gavin and out the door.

Gavin turned to me. His face was red with anger. There was no worry in his eyes. No relief that I was alive. Just pure annoyance.

"Are you out of your mind?" he hissed. He paced at the foot of my bed.

"You were at The Plaza," I said. My voice was raspy, but the words were clear. "With Salma."

Gavin stopped. He didn't even look guilty. He rolled his eyes. "So you pull this stunt? You call an ambulance to punish me? You make a scene on a public hospital floor?"

"I had an episode, Gavin. I collapsed."

"You always have an episode!" he shouted. He threw his hands up. "It’s always a crisis with you, Indie. I can't take one night off without you losing your mind. You are impossible to live with."

I stared at him. I looked at the man I had sacrificed everything for. My health. My youth. My peace.

"Salma doesn't do this," Gavin sneered. He leaned over the bed, his voice dropping to a cruel whisper. "Salma is composed. She handles her life. She doesn't need me to hold her hand every time she gets sad. You? You're just unstable."

He said the word 'unstable' like it was poison. He weaponized the very illness I got from saving his business. He used it to justify cheating on me.

My hands stopped shaking. The heavy fog in my brain suddenly vanished. A cold, sharp clarity took its place. I looked at his messy hair. I looked at the guiltless anger on his face. I noticed a faint smudge of red lipstick on his shirt collar.

"I'm unstable," I repeated quietly.

"Yes!" he snapped. "You need to get yourself under control, Indie. This is embarrassing."

I didn't argue. I didn't cry anymore. The heartbreak was gone, replaced by a deep, freezing anger. I just watched him. And in that quiet hospital room, the illusion finally broke. I saw my husband for exactly who he was. A coward. A user.

My sadness died right there on the hospital bed. And a new, ruthless energy took its place.
