Chapter 3

The break between segments felt too short. I stood near the craft services table, not eating, not drinking, just existing in the space between one humiliation and the next. The coffee stain on my blouse had dried into a stiff dark patch. I'd stopped trying to hide it.

Two stagehands passed behind me, their voices low but not quite low enough.

"—the big reveal in segment four—"

"—going to lose her mind when she finds out—"

"Did you see Miller's face? He's been waiting for this all day."

Laughter, quickly swallowed. Their footsteps faded toward the stage.

I set down the water bottle I'd been holding. My hand was steady. That surprised me. Everything else felt like it was tilting sideways, but my hand stayed steady.

I walked. Not toward the stage. Toward the back corridor where the production offices were. Where it was quiet and fluorescent and empty.

The bathroom was single-stall, blessedly private. I locked the door and pulled out my phone. Found the email Rome had sent this morning—the one with the PDF attachment I'd been too rushed to open. *Here's the doc you signed. For your records.*

I opened it.

The first two pages were standard. Schedule adjustments. Availability windows. The language I'd seen a hundred times before in a hundred other contracts.

Page three made my vision narrow.

*Section 7: Early Termination Penalty. In the event that TALENT terminates this agreement prior to completion of all scheduled appearances, TALENT agrees to pay PRODUCTION COMPANY a penalty equal to ten (10) times the agreed-upon appearance fee, totaling $10,000,000 (ten million dollars), payable within thirty (30) days of termination notice.*

I read it again. Then again. The words didn't change.

Ten million dollars.

I thought about my bank account. The one Rome didn't know the real depth of, but that I'd been careful to keep modest on paper. The actress account. Not the Ashworth Sterling account that sat untouched in a different bank under a different set of access codes.

Ten million would destroy the fiction I'd been living. Would force questions I wasn't ready to answer. Would crack open the life I'd built and expose everything underneath.

I pressed my forehead against the cool tile wall. Breathed in. Out. Counted to ten.

My face in the mirror looked pale. I watched myself smooth the expression away. Rebuild it into something neutral. Something that could walk back onto that stage and smile.

The bracelet caught the light as I washed my hands. I dried them carefully. Reapplied lipstick with the precision of someone preparing for war.

When I walked back toward the stage, my footsteps echoed in the empty hallway. Each one felt like a choice.

Callen was waiting near the stage entrance, his smile bright and sharp. "There you are! Thought we'd lost you. Ready for segment three?"

"Ready," I said.

The lights came up. The audience settled. Callen took his mark with the ease of someone who'd done this a thousand times.

"Welcome back! Now, we have something special—a chance for our audience to connect directly with Meadow. Real questions from real fans. Let's bring out our participants!"

Four audience members filed onto stage. Three women and one man, all holding index cards. All wearing expressions that looked sympathetic but felt rehearsed.

The first woman smiled at me. "Meadow, do you ever regret choosing your husband's career over your own?"

The audience went quiet. Waiting.

I touched the bracelet. "Marriage is about partnership. Sometimes one person's dream takes priority. That's what partnership means."

"But you gave up an Oscar-nominated role," the woman pressed. "Don't you wonder what your life would look like if you'd chosen differently?"

"I wonder lots of things," I said quietly. "But I don't live in those other lives. I live in this one."

The second woman stepped forward. Her card trembled slightly in her hand. "What's it like watching younger actresses take the roles you used to get? Does it hurt?"

Somewhere in the VIP section, I heard Destiny's laugh. Bright and delighted.

"Getting older happens to everyone," I said. My voice stayed level. "The industry has always loved youth. That's not new."

"But you're not that old," the man said. His tone was kind. That made it worse. "You're what, forty?"

"Thirty-eight."

"See? That's not old. But Hollywood treats you like you're finished. How do you cope with that?"

I looked at him. Really looked. He seemed genuinely curious. Like he actually wanted to know how it felt to be erased while you were still breathing.

"You cope," I said, "by remembering that your value isn't determined by whether someone wants to put you on a screen."

The audience applauded. It sounded almost warm.

Callen stepped forward, his hand raised. "Okay, okay, this is getting a little heavy. Let's—"

"I have one more question." The last woman stepped forward before Callen could stop her. "Do you think your husband still loves you?"

The silence was absolute.

I felt every eye in the room. Felt the cameras zooming in. Felt Rome's presence in the VIP section like a weight against my spine.

"Yes," I said.

The lie tasted like metal.

"Alright!" Callen's voice cut through the moment, too loud, too bright. "That's all the time we have for Q&A. Let's take a quick break before our final segment."

The lights dropped. The audience murmured. I walked off stage on legs that remembered how to move even when everything else was numb.

Backstage, I found the corner farthest from the crew. Pulled out my phone. Looked at the PDF again. Section 7. Ten million dollars.

The trap wasn't tightening anymore.

It had already closed.
