Chapter 1

The morning I got out, the sky was gray and flat, like it couldn't be bothered to care either.

Two years. Seven hundred and thirty-one days in a concrete box where they pumped chemicals into my bloodstream every seventy-two hours to keep my wolf from surfacing. The Pinewood Correctional Facility for Feral Wolves. That's what they called it. A place for broken shifters. Dangerous ones. I was sixteen when they put me in. I was eighteen now, and I had never once shifted.

The guard at the gate handed me a plastic bag with my intake clothes. A pair of jeans I'd outgrown and a hoodie that smelled like industrial bleach. I signed the release form without reading it. My hand was steady. I made sure of that.

The iron gate buzzed and rolled open.

Sunlight hit my face and I squinted. The parking lot stretched out ahead of me, cracked asphalt and chain-link fence. And there, parked at the far end like he owned the entire facility and was just deciding whether to keep it, was a black Escalade.

Holden Cooper.

He was leaning against the driver's side door with his arms crossed. Tall. Still. The kind of still that made the air around him feel heavier. He wore a black coat over a dark shirt, no tie, and his expression was exactly what it always was — nothing. Like his face had been carved out of something cold and then someone forgot to finish it.

Holden was my legal guardian. My grandfather Richard Carter, the old Alpha of the Silvercrest Pack, had adopted him into the Carter bloodline when Holden was a boy. Not out of love. Out of strategy. Holden was Lycan-blooded — a different breed entirely from the wolves in our pack. Stronger. Older in power. The kind of dominant that didn't need a title because every Alpha in the Northeast already bowed when he walked into a room. My grandfather had raised him as a weapon. A living shield for the Carter line.

He was the one who signed me out. Not my pack. Not my half-brother Elliot, who had been playing Alpha in my absence. Holden.

I stepped through the gate.

And then it happened.

It started in my chest — a crack, deep and violent, like a frozen lake splitting open from the inside. I gasped. My knees buckled. Two years of chemical suppression shattered all at once, and my wolf — the wolf I had never met, never heard, never felt — tore through the cage they had built around her with a force that whited out my vision.

My bones shifted. Not a full shift — not yet — but I felt her rearranging me from the inside, claiming every nerve, every sense, flooding open channels that had been sealed shut since I was sixteen. Sound hit first. I could hear the guard's heartbeat forty feet behind me. Then sight — the world sharpened until I could count the cracks in the asphalt from across the lot.

Then scent.

Dark cedar. And smoke. Not fire smoke — something older, deeper, like the memory of a forest that had burned and grown back stronger.

It hit me so hard I stopped breathing.

My wolf surged forward with a single word, clear as a bell, louder than anything I had ever heard in my own head.

*MATE.*

No.

I looked at Holden. He hadn't moved. But his jaw was tight. His eyes — usually flat, unreadable — had gone dark. Almost black. He knew. His wolf knew.

Neither of us said a word.

He walked around the Escalade and opened the passenger door. I saw a bottle of water on the seat. A spare jacket folded beside it. The seat no one else was ever allowed to sit in. I knew that rule. Everyone who had ever worked for Holden knew that rule.

I got in. He closed the door. The scent of dark cedar wrapped around me like a hand around my throat.

Holden started the engine and pulled out of the lot without a word. I pressed my forehead against the cold window and told my wolf to shut up. She didn't.

---

We were twenty minutes from Silvercrest territory when I saw it.

A custom black SUV parked outside a pack-allied steakhouse off the main road. Chrome trim. Tinted windows. Detailed to a shine. I knew that car. Elliot had it washed every week like clockwork. His little trophy.

My half-brother. The one who framed me. The one who stole my spot in the elite inter-pack training program, had my wolf chemically suppressed before it could prove my Alpha blood, and handed my life to a correctional facility so he could play king.

"Pull over," I said.

Holden glanced at me. One second. Then he pulled the Escalade to the curb without a question.

I got out. Walked to the trunk. Found the tire iron.

The parking lot was half full. A couple of wolves coming out of the restaurant stopped and stared. I didn't look at them. I walked straight to Elliot's SUV and swung.

The windshield cracked on the first hit. Spiderwebbed on the second. I took out the headlights next — left, then right. Clean swings. The side mirrors came off easy. I put a dent in every panel I could reach, and when I was done with the body, I went back to the windshield and caved it in completely.

Glass everywhere. The alarm screaming.

Every wolf in that lot was watching. I could feel their eyes. Good.

I turned around. Holden was leaning against his Escalade, arms crossed, exactly the way he'd been leaning at the facility. He hadn't moved an inch.

I put the tire iron back in the trunk and got in the car.

We drove.

---

The Silvercrest pack house looked the same from the outside. Stone and timber, three stories, old money and old power built into every beam. My grandfather's house. My mother's house.

I didn't stop at the front hall. I walked straight upstairs to the Luna suite.

The door was unlocked. I pushed it open and didn't recognize a single thing.

The walls were a pale blush pink. New curtains, new bedding, new furniture — all of it soft and curated and wrong. My mother's oak vanity was gone. Her reading chair. The quilt her mother had made. All of it stripped out and replaced with someone else's taste.

Gianna Bradley was sitting on the bed.

She looked up at me with wide eyes. Gianna — the daughter of the woman who killed my mother. The she-wolf Elliot had installed in the Luna suite like she belonged here. She was small, pretty in a careful way, and her expression shifted instantly into something soft and startled. The victim face. I'd heard about it even inside Pinewood.

"Keira — you're — I didn't know you were —"

I didn't let her finish.

My wolf rose. Not a shift. Just presence — raw, unfiltered Alpha aura pouring off me like heat from a furnace. It hit Gianna mid-sentence and pinned her against the headboard. Her eyes went wide. Real fear this time, not the performance.

I pulled the curtains down first. Then the bedding. I swept everything off the vanity — her perfumes, her brushes, her little framed photos — and it all hit the floor in a crash of glass and metal. I tore the decorative panels off the walls with my bare hands.

"This is my mother's room," I said. Quiet. "Get out."

Gianna scrambled off the bed and ran.

I stood in the wreckage and breathed. My wolf settled, just barely.

---

Elliot found me in the hallway ten minutes later. He came flanked by three wolves — pack security, loyal to his stolen title. Marcus Webb, his Beta, stood a half-step behind him with his hand near his radio.

Elliot looked like our father. Same jaw, same dark hair. But there was something thin about him. Something that didn't hold.

"You're out," he said. His voice was sharp, pitched to command. He pushed Alpha tone into it — that pressure that was supposed to make a wolf's knees buckle.

It landed like a breeze against a wall. My wolf didn't even flinch.

"I know what you did, Elliot," I said. I kept my voice low. "Every piece of it. And everything you built while I was gone is coming down."

His expression flickered. Just for a second. Then the mask came back. "You spent two years in a feral facility, Keira. You're not stable. Everyone can see that."

I held his gaze until he was the one who looked away.

I turned and walked down the corridor toward the east wing. And then I stopped.

Through the open door of Elliot's office, mounted on the wall in a black frame, was my early-acceptance letter to the Ashford Elite Training Program. My name. My invitation. Framed like a hunting trophy.

The hallway went quiet. Or maybe that was just inside my head.

I was sixteen again. The night it happened. Elliot's voice, calm and rehearsed, telling pack security I'd been in contact with rogues. The evidence he'd planted — scent trails, a burner phone, messages I never sent. Marcus Webb's hand on my arm. The needle going into my neck before my wolf could surface and prove what my blood already knew. The world going dark and chemical and wrong.

All of it — the frame, the suppression, the two years in concrete — so Gianna wouldn't face wolfsbane smuggling charges. So the trail back to her mother's murder of my mom would stay buried. So Elliot could sit in that office and hang my stolen future on his wall.

I reached under my shirt and touched the silver ring on its chain. My mother's ring. The only thing they let me keep inside.

I let go. And I walked away without a word.

There would be time. I had learned patience in a cage. And patience, when it finally moved, was the most violent thing in the world.
