Chapter 2

The drive to Joaquin's estate took forty minutes. He did not try to fill the silence. I was grateful for that. My chest still ached where the rejection had burned through, though the scent of dark cedar and wild honey kept the worst of it at bay. Sera was quiet inside my head. Not sleeping. Just watching.

The house appeared at the end of a gravel drive that curved along the lake. Modern lines. Glass and stone. Lights on inside, warm against the gray dawn. It looked nothing like the Ironvale Pack house with its heavy timber and territorial flags. It looked like a place someone actually lived.

Joaquin parked and came around to open my door before I could reach for the handle. His hand steadied my elbow as I stepped out. The gesture was so automatic I almost did not notice it. Almost.

"You will have the east bedroom," he said. "It faces the water. The morning light is good."

I followed him inside. The entry hall was clean and uncluttered. No photographs on the walls. No pack insignia. Just pale wood floors and a single painting of a winter forest that looked like it had been chosen by someone who actually looked at it.

He led me upstairs. The bedroom door was already open.

I stopped in the doorway.

The bed was made with white linen. There was a chair by the window with a soft gray throw folded over the arm. On the nightstand sat a small ceramic dish — and inside it, a handful of the silver hairpins I always used and constantly lost. Beside the dish was a book. I stepped closer. Poetry. Mary Oliver. The spine was cracked like it had been read more than once.

I turned to look at Joaquin. He stood in the doorway with his hands in his pockets, watching me with that careful stillness that made it impossible to read him.

"How did you know I lose hairpins?" I asked.

His mouth almost smiled. "You have been losing them at pack gatherings for three years. I started keeping a few."

I opened my mouth. Closed it. Looked back at the nightstand. At the book. At the throw that was exactly the weight I preferred when I could not sleep.

"The thermostat in this room is set two degrees lower than the rest of the house," he added. Quiet. Matter-of-fact. "You run warm."

I did. I always had. It was a small thing. The kind of detail you only noticed if you were paying attention.

I pressed my thumb against the inside of my wrist. "You have been paying attention."

"Yes."

One word. No apology. No explanation.

I looked at him for a long moment. He looked back. Then he stepped into the hall.

"There is tea in the kitchen," he said. "The kind you like. I will be downstairs if you need anything."

He closed the door behind him. Softly.

I sat down on the edge of the bed. The mattress was firm. Exactly the way I preferred. Sera stirred inside my head. *He knows us,* she said. There was wonder in her voice. *He has been watching.*

I did not know what to do with that.

---

The first day I mostly slept. Exhaustion hit me in waves I had not expected. Joaquin did not disturb me. I heard him moving through the house — footsteps on the stairs, the distant sound of his voice on a phone call — but he did not knock.

The second evening I came downstairs and found him in the kitchen.

He was cooking.

I stopped at the bottom of the stairs and watched. He moved with the same deliberate efficiency he brought to everything else. No wasted motion. A pot of water boiling on the stove. Garlic and butter in a pan. The scent hit me before I understood what it was.

Italian truffle pasta.

My favorite.

I had mentioned it once. Once. Four years ago at a Moonveil Pack gathering when someone asked what I would eat if I could only choose one meal for the rest of my life. I had laughed and said truffle pasta, the kind my mother used to make before she got sick. I had not thought about it since.

Joaquin plated two servings and set one in front of the chair at the counter. Then he looked up and saw me standing there.

"You remembered," I said. My voice came out quieter than I meant it to.

He set the pan in the sink. Turned on the water. "I remember most things about you."

I sat down. Slowly. Looked at the plate. At the pasta coiled perfectly, the truffle shavings on top, the sprig of parsley that was exactly the way my mother used to garnish it.

Something cracked open in my chest. Not the burning pain of rejection. Something else. Something I did not have a name for yet.

I picked up my fork. Took a bite. It tasted exactly right.

Joaquin leaned against the counter across from me and ate his own plate standing up. He did not try to fill the silence. He just let me sit there, tasting my mother's recipe in a stranger's kitchen, while the lake turned dark outside the window.

When I finished, I set my fork down carefully.

"Thank you," I said.

He nodded once. Then he took my plate and washed it without a word.

---

The note arrived the next morning.

I found it on the entry hall table when I came downstairs. Cream-colored stationery. Ironvale Pack letterhead embossed at the top. My name written in Raina's elegant script.

I opened it.

*Dearest Camila,*

*I hope you are well. I know last night was difficult for everyone. But I want you to remember what your mother said to you before she passed. She wanted you at Ironvale. In whatever role the Goddess grants you. I believe she would want you to honor that wish, even now. Perhaps especially now.*

*With love,*

*Raina*

I read it twice. Then I folded it precisely along the creases and walked to the fireplace in the living room. I set it on the stone hearth. Did not burn it. Just left it there.

Joaquin found me an hour later. I was sitting on the floor in front of the fireplace with my knees pulled up, staring at the folded note.

He sat down beside me. Not touching. Just close.

I pressed my thumb against my wrist. Hard.

"She used my mother," I said. Quiet. Flat. "At the ceremony. And now in a letter."

Joaquin said nothing. He just waited.

I took a breath. Let it out slowly.

"My mother made me promise," I said. "On her last day. She held my hand and told me to bond into the Ironvale Pack. She said please. She said do this for me." My voice cracked. I steadied it. "I carried that promise for eight years. I walked down that aisle because of it. And Preston threw it back in my face."

Joaquin's hand moved. Rested lightly on the floor between us. Palm up. An offer.

I looked at it. Then I put my hand in his.

His fingers closed around mine. Warm. Steady.

"You bonded into the Ironvale Pack," he said. Low. Certain. "You honored her. You chose me."

I looked at him. At the scars along his jaw. At the leather cord on his wrist that I had braided when I was sixteen and too young to understand what it meant to be seen.

"I chose you," I repeated. Testing the words.

He nodded. "The wish is fulfilled. On your terms."

Something in my chest loosened. Not all the way. But enough.

I looked back at the note on the hearth. At Raina's elegant script. At the weapon she had tried to use.

It did not burn me anymore.

I leaned my head against Joaquin's shoulder. He went very still. Then, slowly, his arm came around me.

We sat there on the floor in front of the cold fireplace while the morning light moved across the lake outside, and for the first time since the rejection, I felt like I could breathe all the way down.
