Chapter 1

The surgical ward never slept, but I did. For thirty-six hours straight, I'd been stitching up lives and signing off death certificates, my hands steady even as my mind blurred at the edges. Now, finally home, I peeled off my bloodstained scrubs and collapsed onto my bed, not bothering to shower. Sleep could wait. I needed to check my accounts first—a ritual after every long shift, my small act of normalcy in a world of chaos and blood.

My phone felt heavy in my hands as I opened the banking app, squinting at the harsh blue light. The main account looked fine—steady salary deposits, regular withdrawals for rent, utilities, the mortgage on the craftsman house I'd bought last year. But then I scrolled to the secondary card. The one I rarely used except for emergencies.

The first charge made my heart skip: Chanel, $3,200. Then Tiffany, $2,700. Nordstrom, $4,500. A cascade of luxury purchases that stretched back weeks, each one a small dagger to my chest. Fifteen thousand dollars, gone. I sat up so fast my head spun, the fog of exhaustion burned away by a surge of ice-cold clarity.

"Mom," I called out, my voice steady despite the storm building inside me. "We need to talk."

Patricia appeared in my doorway, her hair mussed from sleep, wearing the silk robe I'd given her last Christmas. Her eyes widened when she saw my face. "Meredith? What's wrong? You look—"

"Who's been using my secondary credit card?" I held up my phone, the screen displaying the charges like a confession.

She flinched, her hand fluttering to her throat. "Oh, that. I... Callan asked me to help Lana feel welcome, you know? She's from such a small town, and I thought..."

"You thought what?" My voice was calm, surgical. "That it was okay to spend fifteen thousand dollars of my money without telling me?"

"She needed clothes, Meredith. Things for job interviews. Callan said she was struggling so much, and we had to—"

"We?" The word cut through the air like a scalpel. "There is no 'we' when it comes to my money, Mom."

I stood up, still in my underwear, and walked to my dresser for a clean t-shirt. My movements were methodical, precise. "I'm freezing the card. I'm filing a fraud report. And we're going to have a very different conversation tomorrow."

Patricia's mouth opened and closed, but no sound came out. She knew better than to argue when I used that tone—the one I reserved for difficult patients and incompetent residents.

Later that night, I needed my stethoscope case for a follow-up chart review. It was in the family safe, tucked behind my grandmother's jewelry and old family documents. I spun the combination—my birthday, a date I now regretted sharing with Callan—and pulled open the heavy door.

The velvet box that held my grandmother's diamond bracelet was there, but when I lifted the lid, my blood turned to ice. Empty. The three-generation heirloom, the one thing I'd asked Patricia to keep safe for my future daughter, was gone.

"Mom," I called again, my voice echoing through the quiet house. "Where's Grandma's bracelet?"

She appeared in the doorway again, but this time she couldn't meet my eyes. Her gaze fixed on the floor, her fingers twisting in her robe belt. "I... I gave it to Lana. Callan said it would mean the world to her, and the poor girl has nothing. It was just sitting there, and I thought..."

"You thought what?" Each word was measured, deliberate. "That it was okay to give away my family's legacy without asking me?"

"Meredith, please. She was so grateful, and Callan said—"

"Callan said. Callan said." I closed the safe with a soft click, the sound final as a coffin lid. "Go to bed, Mom. We're done talking tonight."

I walked to my bedroom and locked the door behind me, leaning against it as the weight of her words sank in. Callan said. Callan said. The man I'd supported through medical school, the man I'd loved, the man I'd welcomed into my home.

I didn't sleep that night. Instead, I opened my laptop and began to dig. By dawn, I had hired Marcus Thorne, the best private investigator in Seattle, and started my own digital forensics. The cloud account Callan and I had once shared revealed deleted texts, hidden transactions, a web of lies so intricate it took my breath away.

Lana wasn't his cousin. She was his girlfriend—his high school sweetheart, his first love. The Venmo transactions went back three years before I'd even met him. Photos on archived social media showed them at prom, at Christmas, at family barbecues. Their hands intertwined, their smiles genuine.

I sat in the blue glow of my laptop, reading every word, every lie. Three years of my life, fabricated. Three years of my love, manipulated. Three years of my money, stolen.

I didn't cry. I didn't scream. Something inside me hardened, calcified into something cold and dangerous. At six AM, I called my attorney and began transferring every asset, every account, every piece of property into ironclad legal protection.

When Callan brought me coffee that morning, I smiled at him. A small, sharp smile that gave away nothing of the storm brewing inside me. "Thank you," I said, taking the mug from his hands. "That's exactly what I needed."

He had no idea what was coming.
