Chapter 2

I stopped sleeping.

Not all at once. Just piece by piece, night after night, until my bed felt like something that belonged to another woman. I'd lie there until midnight, listening to the radiator tick. Then I'd get up and go to the kitchen.

The table became my office. Laptop. Legal pad. Two burner phones I bought in cash from a bodega on Ninth Avenue. A mug of coffee I never finished.

I started with the penthouse.

The address was easy. I'd followed Cillian there three times before I stopped being able to breathe in the elevator. Public property records showed the unit was owned by an LLC called Ashcroft Holdings. Ashcroft Holdings was owned by another LLC, this one registered in Delaware. That one was owned by a trust. The trust filed under a name I recognized. It was one of Mrs. Hayes's charity fronts. She used it to move money for tax purposes. I'd overheard her mention it once at brunch, back when she still pretended I might one day be family.

So. Cillian had bought Peyton a home. With his mother's money. Through his mother's shell.

I wrote it down on the legal pad in small, even letters.

Then I pulled the financial disclosures. Cillian had a foundation he used for grants and gifts. Every quarter, a wire went out to an account at a private bank in Zurich. Same amount. Same day. The account holder was listed only by number, but the routing pattern matched three other accounts I'd seen Peyton use for tuition and travel. I highlighted the transfers in yellow. Twenty months of them. Then thirty. Then all five years.

By three in the morning my hand had cramped around the pen. My eyes burned. But the numbers on the page were clean. They didn't lie. They didn't smile at me across a dinner table and call me beautiful.

I sat back in the chair. Outside, a garbage truck groaned down the block. The kitchen light hummed above me.

I thought about the woman I'd been at twenty-four. Half-dead with fear of men. Convinced a stranger's arms in the mud had saved me from a life I couldn't live. I thought about how gently he'd taught me to hold his hand. How patiently he'd waited for me to let him kiss me.

He hadn't been patient. He'd been feeding a project.

I closed the laptop. I put the burner phones back in the drawer. I made the bed.

I didn't cry. There wasn't time.

The Hayes gala fell on a Saturday two weeks later. The Plaza's ballroom was full by nine. Chandeliers. Champagne towers. A string quartet playing something that pretended to be Vivaldi. Two hundred people in their finest wearing their most useful faces.

I wore emerald green. Long sleeves. Modest neckline. The kind of gown Mrs. Hayes couldn't criticize even if she wanted to. I'd picked it that morning like a woman choosing armor.

Cillian met me at the entrance. He kissed my cheek. His lips were cool.

"You're stunning," he murmured.

"Thank you."

His hand settled on the small of my back. I felt every finger through the silk.

We worked the room together. I smiled at senators and shipping magnates. I laughed at a joke a museum director made about a Rothko. I let a woman I barely knew hug me and whisper how excited she was for the wedding. Cillian watched all of it with that half-smile he wore when he was pleased with a performance.

An hour in, I told him I needed air. He nodded and let me go.

I didn't make it to the balcony.

A man in a black suit stepped in front of me at the edge of the ballroom. Hayes security. Earpiece. Broad shoulders. Face I'd seen a hundred times and never learned a name for.

"Ms. Nichols," he said quietly. "There's an issue with the coat check. Would you come with me, please."

I already knew.

I don't know how. My stomach knew before my head did. The floor tilted a quarter inch and settled back.

"Of course," I said.

He led me to a small side room off the coat corridor. The door was already open. Mrs. Hayes was inside. Cillian was inside. Two more security officers. A woman I recognized as the Plaza's events director, holding a clipboard she wasn't looking at.

On the small table between them lay my black coat.

And on top of the coat, spread out on a white cloth like a body at a wake, was the Fontaine necklace. Emeralds and diamonds. Six figures, easy. It had been on display in the west gallery an hour ago.

"Adalynn," Mrs. Hayes said. Her voice was velvet. "Would you like to explain?"

I looked at the necklace. I looked at my coat. I looked at Cillian.

His face was arranged into something that was supposed to be disappointment. Sorrow, even. His mouth turned down at the corners just enough. His eyes did the work of a man who was heartbroken to be here.

But underneath. Right underneath. I saw it.

A flicker. The smallest curve at the edge of his lower lip. The satisfaction of a man watching a plan close on schedule.

Something in me went very quiet. Very cold. Almost warm, in the way frostbite feels warm before it takes the skin.

"I have nothing to explain," I said.

Mrs. Hayes's smile spread. Slow. Careful. Venomous as a stain blooming through silk.

"Then I'm afraid," she said, "we'll have to ask you to leave."

The security officer held out my coat. I took it. I put it on. I walked out through the side corridor while a hundred conversations kept humming in the ballroom, unaware.

On the sidewalk under the Plaza's awning, the November air hit my face like water.

I didn't shiver.

I was already somewhere else.
