Chapter 5

Monday morning, before I even stepped off the elevator, I already had a feeling something was coming.

Saturday night, a personal card had bounced through the shared expense inbox by mistake — a dinner reservation confirmation, forwarded from a restaurant that still had Ainara's corporate account on file even though it had been frozen for a week. Table for two, eight o'clock, a private room. I hadn't thought much of it at the time. People eat dinner. People plan things over wine. It wasn't until I was standing in the lobby, watching the elevator doors open onto a floor gone strangely still, that I understood exactly what kind of planning that dinner had been for.

The open-plan office was full. Coffee cups halfway to mouths. Nobody typing. It was the kind of silence that has a shape to it, the kind that means everyone already knows something you don't.

Ainara was standing in the middle of the floor.

She dropped to her knees before I'd even set my bag down.

"Please," she said, and her voice cracked exactly where a voice is supposed to crack, tears already streaming, already glistening under the fluorescent lights like she'd rehearsed the angle. "Please don't do this to me. I know I've made mistakes. I know I'm not perfect. But my dad — my dad owes money to people you don't want to owe money to, and my mom's sick, she can't work, and if I lose this job I don't know what we do. I don't know how we eat."

Someone's chair creaked. Someone else set a mug down too hard.

I stood there in my coat, keys still in my hand, and watched a woman who had billed six-figure dinners to a client account cry about grocery money in front of forty employees who had no idea what was actually in the folder locked in my desk drawer.

"Ainara," I said, low, even. "Get up. This isn't the place."

"It's the only place you'll listen!" Her voice climbed, cracked again, right on cue. "You've been trying to destroy me since the second you found out about us. You took me off the promotion list the same day I visited you in the hospital. Who does that? What kind of person does that?"

A murmur went through the room like wind through wheat. I heard my own name inside it, twisted into something ugly. I felt eyes I'd spent six years earning turn, one by one, into eyes that weren't sure of me anymore.

I opened my mouth to answer — I had the file, I had every date and every dollar amount memorized, I could have ended this in ten seconds — but I never got the chance.

The glass doors at the far end of the lobby slammed open hard enough to crack against the wall.

Dawson came through them at a near-run, coat flying open, face red in a way I recognized from exactly one place — the memory of a professor's office, a fist almost through drywall. He crossed the floor faster than I could brace for it, and before I understood what was happening, his hands hit my shoulders and shoved.

I stumbled backward. My hip caught the corner of Marcus's desk, hard, a white flash of pain that stole my breath for a second, and I grabbed the edge of the desk to keep from going down entirely.

"She's a kid with nothing," Dawson roared, planting himself between me and Ainara like he was shielding her from a wild animal, "and you're trying to destroy her because you can't handle the fact that I moved on!"

The room didn't breathe.

I straightened up slowly, one hand still braced on the desk, hip throbbing, and looked at the forty faces around me — faces that had watched me build this company floor by floor, quarter by quarter, and were now looking at me like I was something that needed to be handled.

"She's the other woman," someone whispered, not even bothering to whisper quietly. "He said she's been going after his girlfriend."

"She's the CEO," another voice muttered. "She's using her position to bully a twenty-three-year-old out of a job because she's jealous."

Ninety seconds. That's all it took. Ninety seconds for the two of them to stand in the middle of my own company and hand everyone a story with me as the villain in it, gift-wrapped, tear-streaked, complete with a bruise already blooming under my blazer where the desk had caught me.

I looked at Ainara, still kneeling, dabbing at eyes that weren't actually producing tears anymore, just performing the memory of them. I looked at Dawson, chest heaving, chin lifted, so certain of his own righteousness that he didn't even notice he was still wearing the watch I'd paid for.

And I stood there, alone, in the center of the floor I had built with my own two hands, surrounded by people who had decided, in less time than it takes to pour a cup of coffee, that I was the one who deserved to burn.
