Chapter 2

I didn't sleep. Couldn't. The pills sat in a paper cup on my tray. I palmed them when the night nurse looked away. Tucked them under my tongue. Spit them into the toilet after she left.

By morning my head was clear. Sharp. For the first time in years, I could think in straight lines.

Shift change was at seven. I knew the routine. Katie clocked out. The new girl—young, always tired—clocked in. There was a window. Fifteen minutes when no one watched the east hallway.

I waited until I heard Katie's voice fade down the corridor. Then I moved.

The orderly station was empty. A phone sat charging on the desk. Not Katie's. The other one. The backup they kept for emergencies. I unplugged it. Slipped it into the waistband of my scrubs. The fabric was thin but it held.

The stairwell door was supposed to be locked. It wasn't. Maintenance had been up there yesterday. I'd heard them complaining about the roof access. They never locked it right.

I climbed.

The air outside hit me like cold water. March wind. Gray sky. The roof was flat, covered in gravel and old tar paper. Vents hummed. I walked to the edge and looked down. Three stories. The parking lot spread out below like a grid.

I sat down. Let my legs dangle over the side.

Then I waited.

The sympathetic nurse was named Maria. She worked weekends. She'd slipped me an extra blanket once when I was shaking from the meds. I'd asked her this morning, very quietly, to make a call if I wasn't at breakfast. To tell them I was on the roof. To tell them I'd asked for my guardian.

She didn't ask why. Just nodded.

Two hours later, I heard the stairwell door bang open.

Footsteps. Fast. Then slower.

Lucian stepped onto the roof.

He still wore the shirt from yesterday. White. Crisp. The sleeves were rolled to his elbows now but the cufflinks were still there. Silver. Catching the light. His hair was perfect. His face was not.

He looked annoyed.

"Elaina." His voice was careful. Warm. The voice he always used. "Come away from the edge. Let's talk inside."

I didn't move.

He took a step closer. Stopped. His eyes flicked to my hands. I wasn't holding anything. Wasn't crying. Just sitting.

"I saw the wedding," I said.

His face didn't change. "I wanted to tell you. I did. But the doctors said it would be too much. They said you weren't ready."

"I saw the ring."

A pause. Shorter than a heartbeat. Then he smiled. Sad. Tender. "The ring was always meant for someone I loved. That didn't change."

"I designed it."

"You were confused, sweetheart. The medication—"

"I designed all of them."

His hand went to his cufflinks. A small adjustment. Left, then right. "Elaina, this is the paranoia talking. We've been through this. Margo is a designer. You admired her work. Sometimes when we admire someone, we internalize their style. It feels like ours. But it's not."

I looked at him. Really looked. The same face I'd loved. The same mouth that used to say my name like a prayer.

"I know what's inside the Nightingale ring," I said quietly.

He went still.

"I know what's engraved on the inner band. Three words. Dorothy's light lives. My mother's name. The date she died. It's hidden under the setting. You'd have to remove the stone to see it."

The wind picked up. Gravel skittered across the roof.

Lucian's face changed.

Not all at once. Slowly. Like a mask sliding off in pieces. The warmth drained out of his eyes. His mouth thinned. When he spoke again, his voice was different. Flat. Cold.

"You were always just the engine, Elaina."

I stopped breathing.

"Margo is the brand," he continued. He wasn't looking at me anymore. He was looking past me. At the sky. At nothing. "Your little doodles would have rotted in a drawer without us. You're brilliant, I'll give you that. But brilliance without a platform is just noise."

"You drugged me."

"I gave you a way out." He said it like he believed it. "You were going to win that award. Then what? You'd have spent the rest of your life chained to deadlines and investors and people who'd bleed you dry. I saved you from that."

"My mother died."

"Unfortunate." He shrugged. One shoulder. "But ultimately irrelevant."

Something inside me cracked. Not broke. Cracked. Like ice before it shatters.

Lucian stepped closer. His voice dropped. Almost gentle. "No one will believe you. You're legally insane. Certified. I have five years of medical records that say you can't tell reality from fantasy. And Margo's next collection deadline is in March." He crouched down. Eye level. "So here's what's going to happen. You're going to come inside. You're going to keep drawing. And we're all going to be fine."

He reached out. Touched my shoulder.

I didn't move.

He stood. Straightened his cufflinks one last time. Left, then right. "I'll have them bring you something to eat. You look thin."

Then he walked away.

I waited until the stairwell door closed. Until his footsteps faded.

Then I pulled the phone from my waistband.

The recording was still running. Twelve minutes. Every word.

I stopped it. Saved it. Labeled it with the date.

Then I stood up and walked back inside.

I didn't need to jump.

I just needed him to think I might.
