Chapter 4

The studio was smaller than Troy's walk-in closet.

I stood in the center of it with two suitcases and a box of books. The walls were beige. The window looked out at a brick wall three feet away. The radiator clanked every twenty minutes like it was trying to tell me something.

I set the suitcases down. I didn't unpack.

I sat on the floor and opened my laptop.

Seven missed calls. None from Troy. Three from numbers I didn't recognize. I let them ring through to voicemail.

My email was full. I scrolled through the subject lines without opening them.

*You should be ashamed.*

*Gold digger.*

*Did you really think you deserved him?*

I closed the laptop.

The radiator clanked.

I pulled out my phone. I texted Sarah, a friend from grad school. We'd gotten coffee last month. She'd seemed happy to see me.

*Hey. Are you free this week?*

She read it immediately. The three dots appeared. Then disappeared. Then appeared again.

Then nothing.

I waited ten minutes. Then I put the phone face down on the floor.

I tried two more people over the next hour. Same thing. Read receipts. Typing indicators. Silence.

I looked at the engagement ring. It caught the light from the window. The brick wall glowed dull red behind it.

I didn't take it off.

I spent the first night on the floor. I didn't mean to. I just sat there until my back hurt and the light outside turned gray. The radiator kept clanking. I counted the intervals. Nineteen minutes. Then twenty-two. Then eighteen.

I thought about calling Troy.

I didn't.

On the second day, I unpacked one suitcase. I hung up three dresses. I put my toothbrush in the bathroom. I stacked my books on the floor by the window because there was no shelf.

I found the prenuptial agreement at the bottom of the box.

I'd folded it carefully when I signed it two years ago. Victoria had slid it across her desk with a pen that probably cost more than my rent. She'd smiled. That thin smile.

"Just a formality," she'd said. "I'm sure you understand."

I'd understood.

I'd signed it because I loved Troy. Because I thought love meant saying yes to things that made you small.

I unfolded it now. The creases were sharp. The paper was heavy. Expensive.

I spread it across the floor. All six pages.

I read it.

Clause three: In the event of separation, all assets acquired during the relationship revert solely to Troy Alexander Powell.

Clause seven: Lara Marie Ellis waives all claims to properties, businesses, or financial instruments held in the Powell family name.

Clause twelve: Any intellectual property developed during the engagement period shall be subject to review by Powell Industries legal counsel to determine origin of funding and therefore ownership stake.

I read that one twice.

I'd developed the patent in my MIT lab. I'd used university resources. I'd worked nights and weekends for two years. The Powell family hadn't funded a single hour of it.

But the clause was there. Vague enough to be a threat. Specific enough to be a weapon.

I sat back. The radiator clanked.

I looked at the ring on my finger. Then at the paper on the floor.

Victoria had wanted me to feel small. She'd wanted me to see these words and understand my place. She'd wanted me to know I was charity. Borrowed time. A guest who could be escorted out.

She'd succeeded.

But she'd also given me something else.

Information.

I knew exactly what I was worth to them now. I knew the math. I knew the terms.

I folded the prenuptial agreement. I put it back in the box. I didn't need to read it again.

On the third night, I sat by the window and looked at the brick wall.

My phone buzzed. A text from a number I didn't recognize.

*You're pathetic.*

I deleted it. Another one came through.

*He never loved you.*

I turned the phone off.

I pulled the engagement ring off my finger. It slid off easily. I'd lost weight. I hadn't noticed.

I held it up to the window. The diamond caught the light. It looked expensive. It looked cold.

I thought about Troy. I tried to feel something. Anger. Sadness. Anything.

Nothing came.

I remembered the night he proposed. The hotel terrace. The lights. The way he'd smiled when I said yes. I'd thought that smile meant forever.

I remembered tutoring him through calculus in high school. The way he'd squeeze my hand under the table when he finally understood a problem. I'd thought that meant partnership.

I remembered the engagement party. The cream silk dress. The way he'd let go of my hand to check his phone.

I remembered Paris. Three weeks of silence. The way he'd walked past me in the kitchen when he came home.

I remembered Melina in my robe. That smile.

I remembered the folder on the counter. Forty-seven pages. The way he'd closed it without reading.

I remembered his voice. *You're embarrassing me.*

I set the ring on the windowsill.

I looked at it.

And I felt nothing.

Not the ache I'd carried for weeks. Not the desperate hope that he'd call and apologize and fix it. Not the love I'd wrapped around myself like armor for years.

Nothing.

It was gone.

I didn't know when it had stopped. Maybe in the elevator. Maybe on the floor of this studio. Maybe the moment he'd chosen her over forty-seven pages of proof.

It didn't matter.

It was gone.

I picked up the ring. I put it in my pocket.

I pulled the prenuptial agreement back out of the box. I read clause twelve one more time.

Then I opened my laptop.

I pulled up the patent files. The research. The data. Two years of work. My work.

I looked at the numbers. The projections. The estimated value.

Two hundred million dollars.

I sat there. The radiator clanked.

And for the first time in three days, I smiled.

Not because I was happy.

Because I finally knew what I was going to do.
