Chapter 5

I went up to the penthouse suite at nine o'clock.

No reason. No folder under my arm. No phone in my hand. I just took the elevator to the top floor, walked through the double doors, and stood there in the dark.

The room was ready. My assistant had seen to that. The long conference table gleamed under the city light coming through the windows. The chairs were set. The display screen was dark and waiting. At the head of the table, my folder sat closed and centered, exactly where it would be tomorrow at two p.m.

I didn't turn on the lights.

I walked to the window instead.

Manhattan spread out below me—fifty-two floors of nothing between me and all of it. The lights went on forever. Office towers still burning at this hour. The bridge cables strung with white. Headlights moving in slow rivers through the streets. I'd looked at this view a thousand times. It had never looked the same twice.

I pressed my palm flat against the glass.

Cold. Solid. Real.

I stood there and let myself think about her. Not about Dutton. Not about the messages or the folder or Thursday at two. I thought about the woman I was before all of it. Before the miscarriage. Before the pressure and the silence and the way I'd learned to fold my grief into something small enough to carry without anyone noticing.

She was softer, that woman. She believed that if you loved someone honestly, it meant something. She thought that hiding her power was an act of trust. That saying *I want to be seen for myself* was brave instead of naive.

She wasn't wrong to want that.

She was just wrong about him.

I didn't cry. I hadn't cried since JFK. I wasn't sure I was going to. What I felt wasn't the sharp kind of pain that breaks open—it was the older, quieter kind. The kind that sits in the body like scar tissue. The kind that doesn't announce itself. It just lives there.

I thought about the baby I'd lost. Not often. I didn't let myself, usually. But tonight, alone in the dark with the city spread out below me, I let the thought come all the way through.

I had wanted her. I hadn't told Dutton that—not clearly, not in words he couldn't dismiss. I'd been careful. Measured. I'd said *I don't know* and *it's complicated* because he'd looked so panicked, and I'd been so used to making myself smaller so he could feel larger. And then she was gone, and my body changed, and I buried it all under work and silence and the quiet, patient hope that he would eventually deserve the things I'd given him.

He didn't.

I touched the glass once more. Lightly. Just my fingertips.

Then I turned away from the window and walked back through the dark room and took the elevator down.

---

Victor was already there when I arrived Thursday morning.

I'd expected that. Victor Shen had been CFO at Monarch Global for six years. He had a habit of arriving early to any meeting he considered significant, settling into his chair with a coffee and whatever documents he'd already memorized, and waiting in the kind of comfortable silence that most people couldn't manage. It was one of the reasons I trusted him.

He looked up when I walked in. Took in the black suit. The closed folder I set on the table in front of my chair. The coffee I'd brought up from downstairs, already cooling the way it always did.

He didn't say good morning. He just looked at my face for a moment—that particular stillness I knew the team had learned to read over the years, the one that meant something was about to happen that couldn't be undone—and then he opened his own folder and started reading.

I sat down.

The room was quiet. Outside the windows, the sky was flat and white. November light. The city looked sharp-edged and cold.

At one fifty-three, my assistant appeared in the doorway. She was wearing the navy dress she always wore when she wanted to project calm authority. She looked at me and said nothing for a moment.

Then: "They're in the lobby."

I picked up my coffee. Set it back down.

Victor closed his folder. Folded his hands on the table. His expression didn't change.

I looked at the door. Thought about Dutton stepping out of that elevator. Thought about the moment he'd walk through those doors and see my face and understand, all at once, exactly what he'd thrown away and exactly who he'd been stupid enough to throw it at.

I thought about Marina beside him. Trusting. Elegant. Completely unaware that in about four minutes, her entire understanding of the last two years was going to shift.

I owed her the truth. Cleanly. Without cruelty. In her own language.

I looked at my assistant.

"Send them up."
