Chapter 3

I sat at my desk with the leather folder open in front of me. Financial records. Corporate filings. Shell companies. The numbers told a story Dutton never wanted anyone to read.

But I wasn't done yet.

"I need everything on Marina Foster," I said into the phone. My assistant's voice came back calm and steady. "Personal background. Education. Business interests. Everything."

"How deep?"

"All the way."

She didn't ask why. She never did. "I'll have it in two hours."

I hung up and looked out the window. The city moved below me. Taxis. Pedestrians. People who thought they knew how the world worked. I used to be one of them. I used to think love was enough. That if you gave someone everything, they'd see your value.

I knew better now.

Two hours later, she knocked. Came in. Set a second folder on my desk. This one was thicker.

I opened it.

Marina Foster stared back at me from a glossy photograph. Dark hair pulled back. Strong features. A tailored jacket that probably cost more than most people's rent. She stood in front of a Parisian gallery at some charity event, a champagne flute in one hand, her posture perfect.

I read.

Born in Paris. Raised between France and New York. Educated at Sciences Po and Columbia. Spoke French, English, Spanish, and Italian. Sat on the board of three nonprofits. Competed in equestrian events across Europe. Her family's wealth went back four generations—old money that didn't need to announce itself.

She wasn't arm candy. She was the whole damn package.

And Dutton had lied to her the same way he'd lied to me.

I kept reading. Found the engagement announcement in a French society magazine. Marina's smile looked genuine. Dutton stood beside her in a suit I recognized—I'd helped him pick it out two years ago over video call. The caption called him an "emerging entrepreneur" and "transatlantic business innovator."

I almost laughed.

But then I saw the rest.

Marina had funded his entire operation. Her family trust paid for his office lease. His staff salaries. His business-class flights. Every polished surface of his fake empire ran on her money. And she probably thought she was investing in a partner. In a future.

She had no idea she was just a wallet with a pulse.

I closed the folder. Looked at my assistant. "Thank you."

She nodded. Started to leave. Then stopped. "Are you going to tell her?"

I met her eyes. "I'm going to let her decide for herself."

She almost smiled. "Good."

After she left, I opened my laptop. Pulled up the files she'd compiled earlier. The ones about Dutton's playbook.

I started reading.

The matching jewelry sets—the silver hoops he'd sent me, the ones I'd thrown away at JFK—weren't special. He'd ordered them in bulk from an online vendor. Six identical pairs. I found the receipt. Marina got a pair. So did someone named Claire in London. And another woman in Berlin whose name I didn't recognize.

The handwritten love letters weren't handwritten. They were printed in a font designed to look like cursive. He'd used a template. Swapped out names. Changed a few details. Sent them on a schedule.

The "spontaneous" video calls were scheduled on a shared calendar he thought no one would ever see. Tuesdays and Thursdays for me. Wednesdays and Saturdays for Marina. Mondays for Claire. He'd color-coded us.

I sat back in my chair. Felt the cold clarity settle deeper.

He hadn't just lied. He'd industrialized it.

I opened the message thread from JFK. Scrolled to the part where he talked about Marina. Found the line I needed.

*Marina's too boring to fuck but too rich to leave. She talks about art and wine like anyone gives a shit. But her trust fund clears eight figures a year, so I smile and nod and let her think I'm fascinated.*

I took a screenshot. Saved it. Added it to the folder.

Then I called my assistant back. "I need Dutton's messages formatted for display. High resolution. Clean layout. And I need a French translator on standby for the meeting."

"You're going to tell her in French?"

"I'm going to give her the respect he never did."

She paused. Then said quietly, "I'll handle it."

I hung up. Looked at Marina's photograph again. Studied her face. She looked confident. Poised. Like a woman who'd never been made a fool of.

I knew that feeling.

I also knew what it felt like when it shattered.

But I wasn't going to humiliate her. I wasn't going to make this a spectacle. I was going to hand her the truth, calmly and clearly, and let her choose what to do with it.

Because that's what Dutton had never given either of us.

A choice.

My phone buzzed. A news alert. I glanced at it.

*Dutton Rivera and fiancée Marina Foster arrive in New York for high-profile business meetings.*

I clicked the link. Saw the photo. Dutton in a tailored coat, his arm around Marina's waist, both of them stepping out of a black car at JFK. He was smiling. That same easy, charming smile I used to think was just for me.

Marina looked elegant. Calm. Trusting.

She had no idea what was coming.

I closed the alert. Stood. Walked to the window.

Fifty-two floors below, the city kept moving. People rushing. Deals closing. Lives changing.

Dutton thought he was coming to charm a CEO.

He thought he was three steps ahead.

He had no idea he'd already lost.
