Chapter 4

He knocked on a Friday morning, two days after Charlie left.

I'd been at the kitchen table with my sketchbook and a cold cup of coffee when the intercom buzzed. I checked the monitor. A man I didn't recognize stood in the lobby—tall, dark coat, the kind of stillness that didn't belong to someone nervous. He held a manila envelope at his side like he'd carried it a long way.

'Quinn Montgomery,' he said when I pressed the button. 'My name is Colin Matthews. I'm not here about Chase. I'm here about your father.'

I let him up.

He walked in and took in the apartment the same way Charlie had—but where she'd been cataloguing, he was calculating. There's a difference. His eyes moved once and then settled on me, and he didn't bother with pleasantries.

'I'll be direct,' he said. 'Chase Lawson has been using your father's connections to route contracts to Charlie Porter's family. Construction deals, vendor approvals, two commercial leases in Brooklyn. Every introduction your father made, every relationship he spent thirty years building—Chase has been trading on the Montgomery name without Wayne's knowledge. Or yours.'

He set the envelope on my table.

I didn't open it yet. I looked at him.

'Why are you telling me this?' I asked.

'Because the Meridian Tower bid closes in three weeks. Chase is the projected frontrunner. If he wins that contract, he rebuilds everything he lost at the gala and walks away clean.' He paused. 'I don't want him to walk away clean.'

'So this is about the bid.'

'It started that way.'

'What do you get out of it?'

Something shifted in his expression—not quite surprise, but close. Like he'd expected a different question first. 'The contract. And the satisfaction of watching a man who's been cheating for years finally face what that costs.'

'And my role in your plan,' I said. 'What does that look like? Because I want to hear you say it plainly.'

He was quiet for a moment. I got the sense he was revising something.

'You have access to your father,' he said. 'And your father's testimony, backed by this documentation, is the only thing that can pull the Meridian board's confidence from Chase before the vote. I need Wayne Montgomery in that room.'

'You need me to hand you my father.'

'I need you to decide whether Chase deserves to keep what he built on your family's name.' He met my eyes and held them. 'That's not my decision to make.'

I picked up the envelope then. I opened it and read slowly, the way Serena had taught me—looking for what wasn't said as much as what was. The documents were thorough. Dates, contract numbers, names I recognized from dinners I'd hosted, from calls I'd quietly arranged. My father's handshake deals, turned into currency for a man who smiled at him across holiday tables.

I set the papers down.

'I'll be in touch,' I said.

Colin nodded. He left his card on the table and walked out without pushing further, which told me more about him than anything he'd said.

I called Serena before his car had left the block.

She was at my table by nine that night with reading glasses and a highlighter, going through every page. I sat across from her with a pen and made notes in the margins. We worked until past midnight. By the time we finished, the picture was clear and ugly—Chase hadn't just cheated on me. He'd been quietly dismantling my father's legacy one favor at a time, using my love for both of them as cover.

'Colin Matthews isn't doing this out of kindness,' Serena said, pulling off her glasses.

'I know that.'

'But the evidence is real.'

'I know that too.' I looked at the stack of papers between us. 'I need to show my father.'

Wayne's office smelled like old wood and coffee, the same as it always had. He was behind his desk when I came in, and he stood when he saw my face.

I set the folder in front of him and didn't speak while he read. I watched him instead—the way his brow tightened on the first page, the way his hand went very still on the second. By the third, his jaw was set in a line I had never seen before. Not anger, exactly. Something harder and quieter than anger.

He closed the folder.

The room was silent for a long moment.

'Every one of these names,' he said, his voice low and even, 'I vouched for personally.' He looked up at me. 'He used my word. My word, Quinn.'

'Yes,' I said.

My father straightened in his chair. He put his hand flat on the folder like he was closing a deal.

'Tell me what you need from me,' he said.

That was all. No speeches. No visible collapse. Just that quiet steel I had heard from him exactly once before, the day he buried my mother, the day he decided the world would not break him.

I called Colin Matthews on the way home.

'We're in,' I said. 'But we do this my way.'
