Chapter 2

The ballroom looked like something out of a magazine. Crystal chandeliers. White roses everywhere, thousands of them, flown in from somewhere expensive. A string quartet played near the windows, and outside those windows, the city glittered like it didn't know what was coming.

I wore the blue gown. Chase always said blue was my color. I chose it on purpose.

"Quinn, you look radiant," said Diana, Chase's mother, kissing my cheek. Her eyes lingered on me a second too long, like she was trying to read something. I smiled and thanked her. I was good at smiling by now. Fifteen years of practice.

I moved through the crowd like water. Investors shook my hand. Old family friends hugged me and whispered about the wedding, about the flowers, about how lucky I was. I nodded. I laughed in the right places. My father found me near the bar and squeezed my shoulder.

"You okay, sweetheart?" he asked. Wayne Montgomery never missed much, but tonight I made sure he missed this.

"I'm perfect, Dad," I said. And for once, that wasn't a lie. I felt calm. Cold and calm, like the water under ice.

Serena caught my eye from across the room. She wore black, sharp as a blade, and gave me the smallest nod. Everything was ready. The technician had been paid. The files were loaded. All that was left was timing.

Chase found me near the stage, glowing with the kind of confidence that came easy to him in rooms like this. He looked so sure of himself. So sure of me.

"Ready?" he asked, taking my hand.

"Ready," I said.

He stepped up first, tapping his champagne glass with a little spoon until the room quieted. Two hundred faces turned toward us. I could feel the weight of all those eyes, all that admiration, all that trust he didn't deserve.

"I just want to say," he began, lifting his glass, "how grateful I am for—"

I stepped up beside him and took the microphone gently from his hand.

He blinked at me, surprised, but smiled anyway, because that's what he did. He smiled through everything.

"Sorry, Chase," I said, my voice smooth and even. "I just have a few things I want to share first."

A small laugh rippled through the crowd. They thought it was cute. A bride stealing the mic. I looked toward the back of the room, found Serena's eyes, and gave the signal.

The screens came alive.

First there was static, and then there wasn't. Photos filled every wall of that ballroom, huge and unmistakable. Chase's hand on Charlie's waist. Their faces close together in a hotel room I recognized from our own engagement pictures. Messages blown up in bold white letters. *I can't stop thinking about you.* *She doesn't get me like you do.*

The silence that followed was the loudest sound I had ever heard.

I didn't look at Chase. I didn't need to. I could feel him beside me, feel the exact moment his body went rigid.

"Quinn—" he started, but I lifted the microphone again, and something in my face must have told him not to finish that sentence.

"Thank you all for coming tonight," I said, my voice steady, carrying easily over the stunned quiet. "I know this isn't the toast you were expecting." A few nervous laughs, quickly swallowed. "There won't be a wedding. I wanted you to hear it from me, and I wanted you to see why."

I could see Diana's hand pressed to her mouth. My father's jaw tightening. Charlie wasn't in the room—she'd had the sense to stay away—but I imagined her finding out later, and something in me settled at the thought.

"Fifteen years," I said, and let the words sit there, heavy and plain. "I gave a lot to this. I think you can all see now what it was worth to him."

I set my champagne glass down on the table beside me. The click of the glass against the linen was small, but it seemed to echo through that enormous room.

Then I reached up, slipped the ring off my finger—the one shaped from my own sketch, the one he'd used like a prop—and placed it beside the glass. I didn't throw it. I didn't need the drama of that. I just set it down, gently, the way you'd set down something you were done carrying.

"Thank you for bearing witness," I said, and stepped back from the microphone.

Chase said my name once, quietly, like he still believed a word from him could undo what was on those screens. I didn't turn around.

I walked through the crowd, past Diana's stricken face, past my father, who reached for my arm and then let it fall when he saw my expression. I walked past all those roses, out through the tall glass doors, into the cool dark of the New York night, and I did not look back once.
