Chapter 1

The keycard beeped green against the lock of room 314. I pushed the heavy oak door open, balancing two shopping bags full of glass votives, massage oil, and a three-hundred-dollar lace corset.

"David?" I called out softly.

No answer.

I stepped into the suite I had booked weeks ago to celebrate our three-year anniversary. The entryway was dark, but a sliver of light bled from the bedroom down the hall.

Then, the noises hit me.

Skin slapping against skin. The wet, unmistakable sound of bodies colliding.

"Fuck, yes. Right there, David."

The voice belonged to a woman. High-pitched. Whiny.

"You like that, Abby?" David’s voice rumbled, thick with lust. "Fuck, you feel so good."

My stomach dropped. Abby. His high school classmate. The girl who had moved back from Paris last month and immediately started texting him at midnight.

I dropped the shopping bags. They hit the carpet with a dull thud.

I walked down the short hallway, my hands trembling. I shoved the bedroom door wide open.

David was on top of her, pinning her to the mattress. His bare ass flexed as he drove his cock deep inside Abby’s cunt. Abby’s legs were hooked over his shoulders, her fingers tangled in his hair. They were drenched in sweat, completely lost in the rhythm of their fucking.

"David," I said.

My voice came out flat, hollow.

David froze mid-thrust. He whipped his head around. His eyes widened, the pupils blown wide.

"Bianca?" he gasped.

He scrambled off Abby, his dick pulling out of her with a wet pop. He grabbed a pillow and shoved it over his crotch.

Abby shrieked, yanking the white hotel duvet up to her chin. She stared at me, her chest heaving.

"What the fuck are you doing here?" David demanded, his voice cracking.

"I booked this room," I said, pointing a shaking finger at the floor. "For our anniversary. I came early to set up candles."

David swallowed hard. His Adam's apple bobbed. "Bianca, wait."

"Three years," I whispered. "We are engaged, David."

"It's a mistake," he said, taking a step toward me. The pillow slipped slightly, revealing the dark hair of his groin. "I didn't mean for this to happen."

"You didn't mean to shove your dick into your high school friend?" I yelled, the anger finally bursting through my shock. "Did you trip and fall inside her?"

"Don't talk to him like that!" Abby snapped from the bed.

I glared at her. "Shut the fuck up, Abby. You knew he was engaged."

Abby’s lower lip quivered. Tears welled in her eyes, spilling over her flushed cheeks. "David," she whimpered, her voice cracking into a pathetic sob. "You said you were going to break things off with her. You promised me!"

I turned my focus back to my fiancé. "Is that true?"

David rubbed the back of his neck, avoiding my gaze. "Bianca, it's complicated."

"No, it's not," I said. I spun on my heel and marched toward the door.

"Wait!" David shouted.

I heard his bare feet slap against the hardwood floor of the hallway. Before I could reach the front door, his hand clamped down on my wrist. His grip was entirely too tight.

I yanked my arm, but he held fast.

"Sorry, Bianca, I can explain," David pleaded. "Just give me five minutes."

"Take your fucking hands off me," I demanded, keeping my eyes fixed on his fingers digging into my skin.

"We need to talk about this like adults," he insisted.

"There is nothing to talk about! You're fucking another woman in the hotel bed I paid for!"

A loud, dramatic wail echoed from the bedroom. Abby stumbled into the hallway, wrapped in the duvet. She collapsed against the doorframe, sobbing hysterically.

"David!" she cried out. "You told me you loved me! You said I was the only one you wanted to be with! Are you just going to leave me here crying?"

David’s jaw clenched. He looked at my face, twisted in disgust, and then turned his head toward Abby. Her tears were flowing freely now, smudging her mascara down her cheeks.

His fingers loosened around my wrist.

Then, he dropped my arm completely.

He turned his back on me and rushed to Abby’s side. He wrapped his arms around her duvet-covered shoulders, pulling her against his bare chest.

"Shh, Abby, baby, it's okay," David murmured, stroking her hair. "I'm right here. Please don't cry."

I stood in the entryway, staring at the man I had planned to marry. He was comforting his mistress because I had the audacity to interrupt their fucking.

A bitter laugh escaped my throat.

It was ridiculous. It was utterly, terribly pathetic.

"Have a great life, David," I said.

He didn't even look over his shoulder. He just kept shushing Abby, kissing the top of her head.

I pushed the heavy oak door open and bolted into the hallway.

Tears blurred my vision as I sprinted toward the elevators. I slammed my palm against the down button over and over until the metal doors slid open. I threw myself inside, pressing my back against the mirrored wall.

By the time I reached the lobby, I was sobbing. The hotel staff stared as I ran past the front desk, ignoring the concierge asking if I needed assistance.

I shoved through the revolving glass doors and hit the pavement. The cold night air slapped my face.

"Bianca, wait!"

The voice echoed from the hotel entrance. David. He must have thrown his pants on and chased after me.

I didn't stop. I wiped the tears from my eyes, my vision swimming with streetlights and neon signs. I just needed to get away. I needed to put as much distance between me and that room as possible.

I stepped off the curb and sprinted into the intersection.

I didn't check the crosswalk signal. I didn't look left.

A horn blared, loud and deafening.

I turned my head. Two blinding headlights rushed toward me, illuminating the wet asphalt.

The screech of tires pierced the air, followed by a violent, shattering impact.

Pain exploded through my side. The world spun upside down, a blur of concrete and flashing lights.

Then, my head struck the pavement, and everything went black.

Would I ever wake up, or was this the pathetic end to a shattered life?
