Chapter 3

Renata Ford's office had floor-to-ceiling windows and not a single family photo. I noticed that first. It told me something about her before she said a word.

"Cole says you have a pitch," she said, not looking up from her tablet. "He doesn't send me people who waste my time."

"I built the deck myself," I said. "No agency, no consultant."

That got her eyes up. "Good. Consultants make everything sound the same."

I opened my laptop. My hands didn't shake. I noticed that too, somewhere in the back of my mind, the way you notice weather — a fact, not a feeling. Two years ago I'd had this exact idea. A platform connecting women-led startups with capital and mentorship, cutting out the old boys' rooms where deals got made over golf and Scotch. I'd sketched the whole thing on a legal pad one night after a marketing meeting. Then Jared had come home talking about the wedding venue and I'd closed the notebook and never opened it again.

I walked Renata through the model. Revenue streams. Early partnerships. The gap in the market that every other platform pretended didn't exist.

"What happened two years ago?" she asked, when I paused for water. "You said you shelved this. Why?"

I could have lied. I didn't. "I decided someone else's ambition mattered more than mine."

Renata studied me for a long moment. Then she closed her tablet. "I'm in for the first round. We'll talk numbers with my team next week."

I didn't smile until I was back in the elevator, alone, watching the floors count down. Then I let it out — one long breath, my palm flat against the cold steel wall, like I was checking I was still solid.

On the flight home I stared out at the clouds over the Cascades and realized something had gone quiet in my chest. I ran the tape back, trying to find the last time I'd thought about Jared. Breakfast. Before Renata's office. Six hours, gone, and he hadn't crossed my mind once.

Eight years, and that had never happened. Not once.

The shell company took Cole's lawyers four days to set up. Meridian Growth Partners — a name that meant nothing, tied to nothing, clean as a blank page. I sat across from him at his kitchen island while his team walked me through the paperwork, and when they asked whose name should be listed as principal, Cole said, "Not hers," before I could answer.

"I can protect myself," I said, after they left.

"I know," he said. "That's not the same as should have to."

I didn't argue. I opened the client list instead, the one with three names highlighted in yellow, and I picked up my phone.

Richard Hartman answered on the second ring. "Naya! God, how are you holding up? Melanie mentioned the — the postponement."

"I'm better than people think," I said. "Actually, Richard, I wanted to talk to you about something separate from all that. Business."

A pause. Interest, not suspicion. "I'm listening."

I told him about Meridian. Faster turnaround. Dedicated account management — not the junior associate King Industries had palmed him off to eight months ago while Jared chased bigger names. Better terms, quietly better, the kind of numbers that made a man lean forward in his chair even if he didn't say so out loud.

"Send me the proposal," Richard said.

He signed six days later. I wrote his name in the small leather notebook I kept locked in my desk drawer, the one page in a stack that would eventually be full. I didn't pour myself a drink. I didn't call Charley to celebrate. I just turned the page and looked at the next name.

There would be time to feel something later. Not yet.

Charley called me on a Tuesday, practically vibrating through the phone. "Okay, so, the forgiving-fiancée thing? It's working better than I even planned."

"Define working."

"I mean Seattle Scene did a whole piece — 'Grace Under Fire,' they called you. Photo of you and Jared at the Hartman gala, you looking soft and devastated and loyal, and get this — comments are dragging Arlette. Calling her a homewrecker. One post has forty thousand likes."

I sat down slowly on the edge of Cole's couch. "That's not what I asked you to do."

"I know, I just nudged it. People do the rest themselves. They love a villain almost as much as they love a martyr, Naya, and right now you're both, sort of, if that makes sense."

It did, in a way that made my stomach turn a little. I hadn't asked to be a martyr. I'd asked for cover.

"How's Arlette taking it?" I asked.

"That's the good part." Charley's voice dropped, gleeful. "My girl at the gallery said Arlette showed up to a private view last week and someone actually turned their back on her. Like, physically. Snubbed her in front of people. She left early."

I thought of Arlette in that bedroom, wrapped in Jared's shirt, smiling at me like she'd already won. Composed. Certain.

"Keep going," I said. "But carefully. I don't want her cornered yet. Cornered animals do stupid things."

"Careful is my middle name," Charley said.

"It is not."

"Fine, it's my work name. Love you. Bye."

I set the phone down on the coffee table and looked out at the water, gray and restless under a sky that couldn't decide on rain. Somewhere across the city, Arlette Smith was starting to feel the ground shift under her feet, and she didn't even know yet that I was the one who'd tilted it.

Good, I thought. Let her wonder.
