Chapter 2

I dropped my overnight bag onto the Italian leather sofa.

"I told you I was leaving town," I said.

"And I told you that makes him the winner," Damian Blackwell replied.

He sat behind a massive obsidian desk. Adrian always needed a crowd, soaking up adoration like a sponge. Damian operated differently. He sat in the silence of his penthouse office like an emperor overseeing a war zone. He owned Blackwell Entertainment, the world's largest film conglomerate. He didn't need the spotlight; he controlled the people who stood in it.

"You want me to marry you to spite an actor?" I asked.

"I want you to marry me because we share a common enemy," Damian corrected. He pushed a thick manila folder across the glass surface. "And because I want you to reclaim your empire. Open it."

"I don't play games, Mr. Blackwell."

"Neither do I. Open the folder."

I stepped forward. I flipped the cover open. The first page was a side-by-side comparison of the script for *Midnight Shadows*, Adrian's breakout hit.

"Why do you have this?" I asked, my voice tightening.

"Read the highlighted sections," Damian instructed.

My eyes scanned the text. It was my handwriting in the margins. My dialogue tweaks. My structural overhauls. Seventy percent of the final shooting script belonged to me.

"Turn the page," he ordered.

I flipped it. Printed emails between me and Director Thomas Ridley. Messages where I begged Ridley to give Adrian an audition, leveraging my own industry favors to get him in the room. Next page: the entire PR blueprint I designed to build Adrian's 'brooding intellectual' persona.

"He went on three talk shows last month," Damian said. "Did he mention you?"

"No," I whispered.

"He told the press he improvised the climax of *Midnight Shadows*. He told them he studied classic literature to build his persona." Damian stood up. He rounded the desk. "He didn't just break your heart, Scarlett. He stole your genius."

"I was his manager. It was my job to make him look good."

"It was your job to manage his schedule," Damian shot back. "It was not your job to write his movies, direct his interviews, and build his entire identity from scratch. You gave him everything."

"And he left."

"You aren't a woman he abandoned," Damian said. He stopped inches from me. "You are someone he used and threw away."

The words hit me like a physical strike. My chest hollowed out. I hadn't lost a relationship. I had been strip-mined. All the late nights, the stress, the negotiations—Adrian claimed them all as his own natural talent.

"He erased you," Damian continued. "He took the crown you forged and placed it on his own head. I am offering you the power to take it back. Or you can get on a plane and let him win."

I stared at the documents. Eight years of my life, reduced to bullet points of theft.

I slammed the folder shut. "Where is the contract?"

Damian handed me a silver pen. "Right here."

I didn't read the fine print. I signed my name next to his.

After I signed the agreement, Damian took the pen from my hand.

"My team will handle the press release," he said. "We announce at noon tomorrow."

"What do you want me to do until then?" I asked.

"Rest," Damian replied. "You have a wedding to attend."

The news dropped exactly at noon the next day.

*Adrian Thorne’s Former Manager Marries Blackwell Entertainment CEO Damian Blackwell.*

My phone vibrated off the nightstand. I answered it without checking the caller ID.

"Are you insane?" Adrian shouted through the speaker.

"Hello, Adrian," I replied. I kept my tone perfectly level.

"You married him? Blackwell? My biggest rival?" His voice cracked. The polished superstar veneer vanished. "You did this to punish me!"

"I did this for myself," I said.

"You can't do this, Scarlett! You're supposed to be—"

"Out of your apartment? I am."

"Cancel it. Tell the press it's a stunt," he demanded. The panic in his voice was unmistakable. He was losing control. For the first time in eight years, I wasn't fixing his problems. I was causing them.

"You wanted a clean break for your image," I reminded him. "This is me moving on."

"Moving on? You jumped into bed with Blackwell Entertainment! Do you know what this makes me look like?"

"I assume your new PR team will figure it out. They are top-tier, aren't they?"

"Scarlett, listen to me. We can fix this. Just issue a statement saying you were emotional. Say Damian took advantage of your vulnerable state."

I let out a harsh laugh. "You want me to play the hysterical ex-girlfriend? So you can play the victim?"

"It's the only way to save both our reputations!" Adrian pleaded. "If you go through with this, my investors will panic. Blackwell has been trying to crush my production company for months."

"And now they have the blueprint," I said.

"You wouldn't do that. You built that company with me."

"No, Adrian. I built it for you. Now I'm tearing it down."

"Goodbye, Adrian." I ended the call.

My tablet chimed. Damian walked into the room, holding two cups of coffee. He handed me one and pointed to the screen.

"Watch this," Damian said.

I tapped the play button. Vivian Moore stared into a camera on a red carpet event.

"I am so incredibly happy for Scarlett," Vivian cooed, her smile brittle and strained. "Adrian and I wish her nothing but the best in her sudden... arrangement."

A reporter shoved a microphone closer to her face. "Vivian, did you know Scarlett and Damian were involved?"

"Well, no," Vivian stammered. "But love works in mysterious ways. Adrian and I are just focused on our future together."

"But Vivian, how does Adrian feel about his former manager teaming up with Blackwell Entertainment?"

Vivian's eye twitched. "We are here to talk about my new film."

She tried to sound gracious, but her eyes betrayed her jealousy. The media wasn't talking about her romance with the newly crowned Best Actor. Every microphone, every headline, every camera was entirely focused on me.

"She hates it," I noted, taking a sip of the black coffee.

"She thought she won the prize," Damian replied. "She didn't realize the prize is useless without the architect behind it."

"When do we make our public debut?" I asked.

He didn't apologize for being late or for the three years we'd spent together. Instead, he pulled out a checkbook, scribbled a number, and slid a ten-thousand-dollar check across the white tablecloth.
