Chapter 4

The photo arrived at 9:47 p.m. while I was reading in Hadley's spare room. My phone lit up on the nightstand. I picked it up and saw Nola's name.

The image loaded slowly. A king-sized hotel bed. White sheets rumpled and expensive-looking. A marble nightstand. And there, unmistakable in the lamplight, Kieran's Patek Philippe watch. The one his father gave him when he made CEO. The one he never took off.

The caption read: *He came to me, Skylar. He always comes to me.*

I looked at the photo for four seconds. Then I took a screenshot. I forwarded it to Hadley with a message: *We're going to need this.*

I set the phone face-down on the nightstand and returned to my book. I finished the chapter I'd been reading. Then I stood, pulled on my coat, and picked up my car keys.

Hadley appeared in the doorway. "Where are you going?"

"The Langham Midtown."

She studied my face. "You want me to come?"

"No."

"Sky—"

"I'll be back in an hour."

I drove through the rain, my hands steady on the wheel. The city looked blurred through the windshield, lights bleeding into water. I parked in the Langham's underground garage and took the elevator to the lobby.

The front desk clerk looked up when I approached. Young. Polished. Probably new.

"Good evening," I said. "I need to access the suite reserved under Mitchell Media corporate account. My fiancé is working late and forgot some documents."

I'd used this line before. Legitimate. Dozens of times over the years when Kieran was on location and needed something couriered.

The clerk checked her computer. "Suite 1847. Would you like me to call up first?"

"No need. He's expecting me."

She handed me a key card. I thanked her and walked to the elevator bank.

The eighteenth floor was silent. My heels made no sound on the carpeted hallway. I found 1847 and knocked once.

Footsteps. Then the door opened.

Kieran stood there in a white bathrobe, his hair damp. His expression shifted from confusion to recognition to something like panic in the space of two seconds.

"Sky—"

I walked past him into the suite.

The room was large. Floor-to-ceiling windows overlooking Midtown. A sitting area with a leather sofa. A dining table. And beyond that, the bedroom.

Nola was sitting up in the bed, the sheet pulled to her chest. Her hair was loose. Her lipstick smudged. When she saw me, her eyes widened. Then something else moved across her face. Calculation.

"Skylar," she said. Her voice was soft. Almost apologetic. "This isn't—"

I walked to the room service cart by the window. Two wine glasses. One empty bottle. I picked up a glass, feeling its weight in my hand. Crystal. Heavy. Expensive.

I threw it against the marble floor.

The sound was sharp and final. Glass exploded across the tile, glittering under the suite's recessed lighting.

Kieran flinched. Nola pulled the sheet higher.

I turned to face them both.

"I found the cloud folder," I said. My voice was quiet. Steady. It filled the room like smoke. "The messages. The videos. The timeline."

Kieran opened his mouth. I raised one hand and he stopped.

"Three years," I continued. "Starting the exact month I moved Nola to New York. The same month I introduced her to you at the Columbia fundraiser."

I walked slowly toward the bed. Nola's eyes tracked me.

"I also found the corporate filings for the management company you founded. The one you bankrolled with diverted Mitchell Media funds. The one you built specifically to launch Nola's influencer career."

Kieran's face went white.

"I cross-referenced your work-trip calendar against hotel reservations under your personal credit card. Forty-three trips in three years. Every single one overlapped with a reservation at whatever city you claimed to be filming in."

I stopped at the foot of the bed and looked at Kieran.

"You didn't have an affair," I said. "You built an infrastructure."

His mouth opened. Closed. No sound came out.

I turned to Nola.

"And you didn't steal my fiancé. You auditioned for a role, and he gave you the part."

Nola's expression hardened. "You don't understand—"

"I understand perfectly," I said. "You wanted everything I had. He wanted everything without choosing. You both got exactly what you deserved. Each other."

I walked back toward the door.

"Sky, wait—" Kieran moved toward me, his hand reaching.

I looked at him. Really looked at him. The man I'd spent ten years building a life with. The man who'd called me his white gardenia. The man who'd constructed an entire second existence behind a cloud folder I'd opened by accident.

"Don't contact me again," I said. "Not at my office. Not at my apartment. Not anywhere."

"Please—"

"Your lawyers will hear from mine regarding the wedding cancellation. Everything else is finished."

I opened the suite door and stepped into the hallway.

Behind me, I heard Nola's voice, sharp now, accusatory: "This is your fault. You said she'd never find out—"

Kieran's response was muffled by the closing door.

I walked down the carpeted corridor, rode the elevator to the lobby, and returned the key card to the front desk clerk.

"Everything okay?" she asked.

"Perfect," I said. "Thank you."

I drove back to Hadley's apartment through the rain. My hands were steady on the wheel. My breathing was even.

When I walked through her door, she was waiting in the kitchen with two glasses of wine.

"How'd it go?"

I set my keys on the counter. "Phase one complete."

"And phase two?"

I picked up the wine glass. "Tomorrow, we start building the exposé."

Hadley smiled. It wasn't a kind smile. It was the smile of a litigator who'd just been handed a winning case.

"Let's destroy them," she said.

I raised my glass.

"Carefully," I said. "And completely."
