Chapter 5

The banging started just after eight in the morning.

Loud. Rhythmic. The kind of sound that makes your whole body go tight before your brain catches up to what it means.

I was pouring Lily's cereal. The bowl tipped in my hand, milk sloshing over the rim onto the counter. Down the hall, the pounding came again, harder this time, and then Kian's voice, muffled through the door but unmistakable.

"Brynn! Open the door!"

Lily looked up from her coloring book, crayon frozen mid-stroke. "Mommy?"

"Stay here," I said. My voice came out steadier than I felt. "Don't move, baby."

I walked down the hall, my hand already reaching for my phone in my pocket. The security guard Magnus posted should have stopped this. Should have called up first. Should have been doing his job instead of letting a man I'd explicitly flagged hammer on my door like he owned the building.

I didn't open it. I stopped two feet back and kept my voice flat. "Leave, Kian."

"I'm not leaving until you let me see her!" His voice cracked on the last word, high and desperate. "You can't keep my daughter from me! I have rights!"

"She's not your daughter."

"The timeline fits! You know it does!" Something hit the door — his palm, maybe his fist. "I want a paternity test. That's reasonable. That's fair. You can't deny me that!"

Behind me, I heard the scrape of a chair on the kitchen floor. Small footsteps on hardwood.

"Lily, stay in the kitchen—"

But she was already running down the hall, curious and fearless, the way she always was when she didn't understand danger yet. She reached my side and grabbed my leg, peeking around me toward the door.

"Who's yelling, Mommy?"

"No one," I said, and I reached down to pick her up, to carry her back to the kitchen, but the door shook again and this time the deadbolt rattled and I realized with a cold, sick lurch that I hadn't thrown the second lock last night.

The door swung open.

Kian stood there, breathing hard, his face red and his eyes too bright. He looked past me, straight at Lily, and something in his expression shifted — went sharp and hungry and sure.

"There she is," he said, and he stepped forward.

I moved between them, one arm out. "Get out. Now."

"I'm not leaving without her." His voice dropped lower, almost calm now, which was worse somehow. "You've had four years, Brynn. Four years of keeping her from me. That ends today."

"She's not yours—"

He lunged.

Not at me. Around me. His hand shot past my shoulder and grabbed Lily's wrist, yanking her forward so hard she yelped. I grabbed for her other arm, my pregnant belly knocking into the doorframe, and for one horrible second we were both holding her, pulling, and Lily started to scream.

"Let go of her!" I shouted, and my voice broke on it, high and raw.

Kian wrenched her toward him with both hands now, lifting her off the ground, and Lily twisted in his grip like a wild animal. Her teeth sank into his hand, hard, and he yelled and loosened his hold just enough for her to get one leg free.

She kicked him in the chest.

"Bad man!" she screamed, her voice shrill and terrified. "You're not my daddy! You're not my daddy!"

But he didn't let go. He turned and ran for the elevator, Lily thrashing in his arms, her screams echoing down the hallway. I ran after them, my phone already in my hand, my thumb shaking so hard I almost dropped it.

The elevator doors were closing.

I hit the stairs.

By the time I reached the lobby, he was already outside, shoving Lily into the back seat of a black sedan. She was still screaming. I could hear her through the glass. The car door slammed shut and Kian got in the driver's seat and the engine started and I ran into the street, my hand up, my voice hoarse.

"Stop! Someone stop him!"

The car pulled away.

I stood there on the curb, my chest heaving, my phone clutched so tight my knuckles went white. My hands were shaking. My whole body was shaking.

I pressed Magnus's name.

It rang once.

"Brynn." His voice came through, steady and warm, and I opened my mouth and nothing came out but a sound I didn't recognize.

"He took her," I finally managed. "Magnus, he took Lily."

Silence. One beat. Two.

Then his voice again, and it was different now. Colder. Flatter. The voice that ended careers.

"Where."

"I don't know. He just—he grabbed her and he drove away, I don't know where he's going—"

"I'm tracking your phone. Get in your car. Follow him. Don't hang up."

I ran for the parking garage, my breath coming in short, sharp gasps. My hands fumbled with the keys. The engine turned over and I pulled out onto the street, scanning wildly for the black sedan.

There. Two blocks ahead. Turning left.

I followed.

"I see him," I said into the phone. "Magnus, I see him."

"Stay on the line," he said. "I'm coming."

Ahead of me, the black car ran a yellow light. I ran the red.
