Chapter 3

The flowers started on Tuesday.

White peonies, no card, just a note tucked in the cellophane. *Remember our first summer?* I stood in the lobby holding them like they might bite me, then dropped the whole bouquet in the trash can by the elevators.

Thursday it was tulips. The note was different this time. Colder. *A daughter needs her real father.*

I photographed both notes before I threw them out. I didn't know why yet. Just some old instinct, the same one that made me keep receipts and screenshots and every ugly text message from years ago. Proof mattered. Proof was armor.

He started showing up in person after that. Friday, he was at the café near my studio, sitting at the corner table like he had every right to be there, stirring a coffee he didn't drink. I turned around and walked the other way before he saw me, my heart slamming so hard I had to stop on the corner and breathe.

Saturday, the park. Lily was on the swings, and I was pushing her, and I looked up and he was standing by the fence, hands in his coat pockets, just watching. Not moving. Just watching, like he was cataloguing something.

"Higher, Mommy!" Lily yelled, and I pushed her higher, and when I looked back at the fence he was gone.

Sunday, he was outside my building when Adaline brought Lily home from her grandmother's. I saw him from the window, saw him say something to Adaline, saw her shake her head and hurry Lily inside. By the time I got down to the lobby, he was gone again.

I photographed him too. Grainy shots through glass, his gray coat, his face turned half away. I built a folder on my phone labeled *K — receipts*, and every night I added to it, and every night I told myself I'd tell Magnus everything.

But when he called from London, tired, his voice low with the hour, I said, "He showed up once. It's handled."

"Once," Magnus repeated, and there was a pause that told me he didn't fully believe it.

"I've got it," I said. "I don't want you flying home over flowers."

He let it go. He always let things go when I asked him to, which was its own kind of trust, and its own kind of danger, because I wasn't telling him the truth and I knew it.

Wednesday night, Lily was asleep and Magnus was on a call with Declan that ran long, his voice a low murmur through the study door. I went into my studio instead of waiting up. I unlocked the bottom drawer of my desk, the one with the little brass key I kept on my own ring, and took out the enamel box.

It was small, robin's-egg blue, chipped at one corner. Inside was a single folded letter, the paper gone soft at the creases from how many times I'd opened it.

I sat down at my drafting table and read it again, even though I knew most of it by heart.

*Brynn — I don't expect you to want to hear from me. I wouldn't, in your place. But I've spent five years watching you from a distance you probably didn't know I was watching from, and I think you should know some things before I'm not able to tell you myself.*

I kept reading, the familiar sentences unspooling, Sawyer's careful, unsentimental handwriting steady all the way to the end, all the way to the line that had never once lost its weight no matter how many times I read it.

*He never loved either of us. He only loves the idea of owning someone.*

I sat there for a long minute with the letter in my lap, listening to the low murmur of Magnus's voice down the hall, and then I picked up my phone and called Petra.

She answered on the second ring. "It's nine-thirty on a Wednesday, this better be good."

"Kian's been showing up," I said. "Flowers. The park. Outside the building."

"What?" Her voice sharpened instantly. "Does Magnus know?"

"Not all of it."

"Brynn—"

"I have the letter in my hand," I said, cutting her off, and my voice came out steadier than I felt. "Sawyer's letter. I've never read it to anyone out loud. I want to now."

There was a pause. Then, quietly, "Okay. Read it."

So I did. I read the whole thing, start to finish, my voice thick in places and flat in others, and when I got to the last line, I said it slow, so it would land the way it deserved to land.

"He never loved either of us," I said. "He only loves the idea of owning someone."

Silence on the line. Then Petra, low and furious. "God, Brynn."

"I know."

"You have to tell Magnus everything. All of it. The flowers, the park, all of it."

"I know," I said again, and this time I meant it.

I folded the letter back along its worn creases and set it in the box, but something in me had already changed shape. The guilt I used to carry — some small, ridiculous residue of *maybe I did something wrong* — was gone. In its place was something harder. Something with edges.

Down the hall, Magnus's voice had gone quiet. I heard his study door open, his footsteps in the hall.

I closed the drawer, turned the little brass key, and went to find him.
