After My Ex-Husband Tried to Steal My Son

That evening, I sat across from Kaiser at our kitchen island. The clock on the wall read 9:47 PM. Kole was asleep upstairs. The house was quiet except for the soft hum of the refrigerator and the distant sound of traffic on the street below.

Kaiser's hands were folded on the marble countertop. He was watching me with those dark eyes that missed nothing.

"We need to talk about exposure," he said. His voice was calm. Measured. "I can end this tonight. One phone call. The Torres name in the right ears. Quentin backs off. Camilla disappears."

I looked at him. At the man who had never once pushed me to use his power, who had let me build my life on my own terms.

"Not yet," I said.

His eyebrow raised slightly. "You're still protecting your independence."

I nodded. "I've spent seven years building my reputation. My career. I did it on my own merit. I'm not ready to become 'Kaiser Torres's wife' in the public eye. I'm not ready for people to assume my success came from you."

Kaiser studied me for a long moment. Then he nodded. "Your timeline. Your terms. But the moment it touches Kole, I move."

"I know," I said. "And it's closer than it's ever been."

We both understood what that meant.

Saturday morning. The park near Kole's school was busy. Parents clustered on benches. Kids ran between the playground equipment.

I was talking to Elena, mother of Kole's classmate, about the upcoming science fair. Kole was sitting on a nearby bench, swinging his legs, probably thinking about the hot dog he'd demanded for lunch.

I glanced over. Kole was still on the bench. But he wasn't alone.

Quentin knelt beside him, hands on his knees, smiling. He was wearing jeans and a casual jacket. He looked like he belonged there.

"...an old friend of your mom's," I heard him say. "How old are you, buddy? Seven? That's a great age. Do you like sports?"

Kole nodded enthusiastically. "I like soccer! And basketball! But Mom says I can't play football until I'm older. She says it's too dangerous."

Quentin laughed. "Smart mom. What else do you like?"

I excused myself from Elena and crossed the distance in seconds. My heart was hammering. My hands were shaking.

"Kole," I said. "Come here."

Kole looked up, surprised. "Mom? This man knows you! He's asking about—"

"Now, Kole."

Kole slid off the bench and came to me. I put my hand on his shoulder and turned to face Quentin.

He was still kneeling. Looking up at me. His smile faltered.

"Liv, I was just—"

"If you come near my son again," I said, "I will destroy you. And I have the means to do it."

My voice was low. Shaking. Not with fear. With fury.

Quentin blinked. He stood slowly. "I wasn't—"

"You don't get to speak to him," I said. "You don't get to kneel beside him and ask him questions. You don't get to smile at him like you belong in his life. You don't get to do any of that. Ever."

People were staring. I didn't care.

Quentin looked at me. Really looked at me. For the first time, I saw something flicker in his eyes. Uncertainty. Maybe even fear.

He didn't know who I was anymore. He didn't know what I was capable of.

Good.

Monday morning. The gallery was quiet. Most of the staff hadn't arrived yet.

Sloane Mercer stood in my office doorway. She had a manila folder in her hands.

"You need to see this," she said.

She dropped the folder on my desk. It landed with a heavy thud.

I opened it. Screenshots. Text messages. Email forwards. A timeline of whispers and rumors.

"She's not just gossiping," Sloane said. "She's trying to build a case that you're unstable. That you're obsessed with your ex. That you're unfit to be around the artwork. Or your son."

I closed the folder. "Thank you, Sloane."

She nodded and left.

I picked up my phone and dialed Kaiser's number.

He answered on the second ring. "Liv."

"It's time," I said. "Not public yet. But begin."

There was a pause. Then: "I'll make the calls."

I set the phone down and looked out the window. The city stretched out before me. Full of power and money and secrets.

Kaiser would move quietly. Precisely. He would begin with the financial pressure. A call to a lender. A suggestion. A question about risk.

Quentin's real estate firm would feel it first. A line of credit paused. A deal delayed.

He wouldn't connect it to me. Not yet.

But he would soon.
