Chapter 2

Three days after the field day, I was back inside my routine. Tuesday. Eight in the morning. A table by the window at the little coffee shop on Bleecker. Black coffee. Gallery opened at nine.

I was thinking about Kole. The way he'd asked if we could get pizza that night. The way his hair stuck up when he slept.

And then the chair across from me scraped backward, and a man sat down.

I didn't look up right away. I knew the shape of the silence before I saw his face. The perfection of it. The way it waited to be noticed.

Quentin set his hands on the table. "Liv."

I looked at him. Charcoal suit, no tie, smiling like he'd been invited.

I set my coffee down.

"I want to say something," he said. "Before you decide to leave. I've thought about this for weeks."

"There's nothing for you to say."

He looked at me, then past me, out the window. A performance. He folded his hands and held eye contact a fraction too long, the way he always did when he wanted to be believed.

"I was wrong, Liv. About everything. Marrying Camilla was the worst mistake of my life. I never stopped thinking about you. Not one day."

I watched his mouth move. Nothing in his face had changed. He was still the man who told me a baby would be inconvenient. Still the man who stood in the clinic parking lot and checked his phone while I cried.

"The boy," he said. "The boy at the field day. He's—"

"Don't."

"I just need to know," he said. "I need to know if I have a son who doesn't know me."

I stood up. The chair scraped. People looked. I didn't care.

"You need to leave, Quentin."

"Liv, please. I can give you anything. I can give him anything. A life—"

I walked out. I didn't look back.

I stood on the sidewalk for a moment and let the morning air settle me. I was fine. My hands were fine. I told myself that.

But I knew the look in his eyes. I'd seen it before. He didn't hear the word no. He heard a door he needed to push harder.

---

The packages started the next day.

The courier rang my bell at six in the evening, after I'd picked up Kole. A box of white roses. The expensive kind. The card said, in his careful script, "We should talk. — Q."

I took a photo of the card. I wrote RETURN TO SENDER on the box and set it out for the doorman.

The second day, a bracelet. Thin gold, a tag I didn't open. I returned it unopened.

The third day, a first-edition art criticism book. One I'd loved in college. I'd mentioned it once, seven years ago, and he'd bought it a week later to seem attentive. I returned it unopened.

The fourth day, another note. "Please. Just one conversation."

The fifth day, another box. I didn't open it. I photographed the whole stack by the door — five boxes, five returns, my own handwriting on each label — and sent the image to Kaiser's attorney without a single word.

I didn't tell Kaiser. I didn't need to. He'd see that image and understand what I was saying: I'm handling it. I'm keeping the trail.

---

Wednesday night. Kole was asleep. I was in the kitchen, and the doorbell buzzed again.

Another envelope. Thin is what I expected. This one was thick, with the weight of a document.

I signed for it and carried it inside. I sat at the kitchen table and read every page.

Custody inquiry. From Quentin's attorney. Requests for information establishing Kole's parentage. A claim of potential parental rights.

I read it twice. My hands were still.

I thought about Kole, asleep in his room. I thought about the life I'd built out of the wreckage. I thought about the smug certainty in Quentin's eyes, and the way he'd looked at my son like something he could take.

I called Kaiser.

"Liv."

"I got a letter," I said. "Custody inquiry. From his attorney. They want to establish parentage."

There was a pause. Not long.

"I'll handle the attorneys," he said. "Nothing changes for Kole's morning."

"How can you—"

"I'm telling you," he said. "Nothing changes for Kole's morning."

I exhaled. My shoulders came down an inch.

"Okay," I said.

I folded the letter and locked it in the drawer at the bottom of my desk. I went to Kole's room and stood in the doorway. He was curled around his bear again, his mouth slightly open.

He was six. He was the fastest in his class. He wanted pizza.

I closed the door and stood in the hallway for a long moment.

The man who had destroyed me was trying to take my son now.

That man was about to learn something about me.
