After My Ex-Husband Chose His Mistress Over Our Baby

As the afternoon light fades in an empty classroom, a schoolteacher sits alone with her cold coffee, grading her third-grade students' essays. Out of twenty-two proud stories about families and beloved pets, nineteen are finished. Now, her red pen hovers in a silent, heavy pause over the twentieth page. There, the name Esme Daniels is written with bold, meticulous pride, forcing her to confront the lingering shadows of a broken home and the painful betrayal that shattered her family apart.

Chapter 3

Three days after the conference, I'm grading spelling tests during my free period when Patricia Voss appears in my doorway. Her expression is carefully neutral. That's never good.

"Harlow," she says quietly. "There's a parent here to see you. She's... insistent."

I set down my pen. "Does she have an appointment?"

"No." Patricia hesitates. "It's Esme Daniels's mother."

Something cold slides down my spine. I breathe in. Hold. Out.

"Of course," I say. "Send her in."

Patricia's eyes narrow slightly. She knows. Not everything—no one knows everything except Maddison—but she knows enough to recognize when I'm using my very calmest voice.

"I'll be nearby," she says.

I nod. Straighten the papers on my desk. Small tasks.

The woman who enters my classroom is all sharp edges and expensive labels. Designer handbag. Heels that click like punctuation. Hair blown out to magazine perfection. She stops three feet inside the door and looks around—at the alphabet chart, the student artwork, the succulent garden on the windowsill—like she's entered a space beneath her.

Then she looks at me.

I watch recognition arrive slowly. She's searching for someone else. Someone hollow-eyed and hospital-gowned. Someone who sobbed and begged and broke. That woman doesn't exist anymore. I can see the exact moment this registers. Her face shifts. Hardens.

"You," she says.

I stand. Smooth my blouse. "Mrs. Daniels. I don't believe we have a scheduled conference, but I'm happy to discuss Esme's progress. Please, have a seat."

She doesn't sit. She moves closer. Her perfume arrives before she does—something floral and cloying.

"You think you're clever," Demi says. Her voice is tight. Controlled. For now. "Calling my husband. Questioning my daughter's essay. You think I don't see what you're doing?"

I keep my expression pleasant. Attentive. "I called Mr. Daniels because he's listed as the primary contact. The essay raised some pedagogical concerns about age-appropriate—"

"Don't." She cuts me off. Steps closer. "Don't play dumb. You're targeting my child because you're a failed woman who couldn't keep a man."

I reach for the notepad on my desk. Pick up my pen. Begin writing. Date. Time. Direct quote.

Demi's eyes track the movement. Her voice rises. "What are you doing?"

"Taking notes," I say mildly. "Please continue."

"You have no right—" Her hands curl into fists. "You were committed. You were institutionalized. You're mentally unstable and you have no business teaching anyone's child, least of all mine."

I write that down too. My handwriting is very neat.

"You're jealous," Demi continues. She's louder now. The careful control is fraying. "You lost and I won and you can't stand seeing what a real family looks like—"

"Could you repeat that last part?" I look up. My voice is perfectly courteous. "About my medical history? I want to ensure the administration has the complete context for the formal complaint I'll be filing."

She stops. Blinks.

"Complaint?"

"Yes." I set down my pen. Fold my hands on the desk. "A parent has just referenced a teacher's private medical information in a hostile manner on school property. That's a Title IX issue. Possibly grounds for a restraining order, depending on whether this constitutes harassment under district policy. I'm sure Vice Principal Voss can clarify."

As if summoned, Patricia appears in the doorway.

"Is everything all right?" Her tone is pleasant. Her eyes are not.

I turn to her. My expression is calm. Professional. "Mrs. Daniels and I were just discussing some concerns. I'd like to request formal documentation of this interaction. Mrs. Daniels has made several statements regarding my private medical history that I believe violate district conduct policies."

Demi's face goes white. Then red. She looks between us—me with my notepad, Patricia with her institutional authority—and something in her posture shifts.

"I was simply expressing concern," she says. Her voice has dropped. Modulated. "As any mother would."

"Of course." I smile. It's warm. Understanding. Utterly impersonal. "I appreciate your investment in Esme's education. If you'd like to schedule a formal conference to discuss her progress, please contact the office. They'll find a time that works."

Demi stares at me. I meet her eyes. There's nothing in my face but polite attention.

She turns. Her heels click toward the door. She stops in the threshold. Looks back.

"You think you've won something," she says quietly. "But you're still the woman he left."

I pick up my red pen. Return to the spelling tests on my desk.

"Have a wonderful afternoon, Mrs. Daniels," I say without looking up.

She leaves. Patricia lingers.

"You okay?" she asks softly.

"Always," I say.

And I mean it.
