Chapter 4

Damian sat in the conference room on the forty-second floor and stared at the document in front of him.

His publicist, Rachel, stood by the window. His lawyer, Marcus, sat across the table with his hands folded like a priest delivering last rites. Lilith's attorney had joined via video call, her face pixelated but her voice crystal clear.

"You cannot issue this statement," Marcus said. Not unkindly. Just factual. "The liability exposure alone—"

"I don't care about liability," Damian said.

Rachel turned from the window. "You should. Three studios have already called. If you publicly contradict Lilith's narrative, you're in breach of the morality clauses in both the Paramount deal and the Netflix contract. That's forty million dollars in penalties. Minimum."

Damian looked at the statement he'd written. Three paragraphs. Simple. True.

*The recent allegations against Dr. Elowyn Burke are false. I take full responsibility for any confusion my presence at Manhattan Presbyterian Hospital may have caused. Dr. Burke conducted herself with complete professionalism. She deserves to be judged on her exceptional medical career, not on fabricated stories designed to damage her reputation.*

Three paragraphs that would cost him forty million dollars and every project he had lined up for the next two years.

Three paragraphs that might give Elowyn back what Lilith had taken.

"The defamation risk is significant," Lilith's attorney said from the screen. "If Mr. Reynolds implies that Ms. Vasquez orchestrated false allegations, she has grounds to sue for damages to her career and reputation. We're talking eight figures."

Marcus slid another document across the table. "This is the agreement. You stay silent on the matter. No statements. No interviews. No social media posts. In exchange, the studios hold their positions and Lilith's team agrees not to pursue further action."

Damian stared at the paper.

He thought about Elowyn in the parking garage. The way she'd looked at him like he was a stranger. Like eight years had turned him into someone she didn't recognize.

She'd been right.

"If I sign this," he said slowly, "what happens to her?"

Rachel and Marcus exchanged a glance.

"That's not our concern," Rachel said gently.

Damian picked up the pen.

His hand hovered over the signature line.

He thought about the apartment they'd shared. The morning she'd left for a double shift with her hand still bandaged, kissing him goodbye, telling him it was fine, it was worth it, they'd get through it together.

He thought about the day he'd left. No scene. No explanation. Just gone.

He signed.

The pen made a soft scratching sound against the paper.

Marcus took the document. "Good. We'll file this immediately."

The video call disconnected. Rachel gathered her things. Marcus left.

Damian sat alone in the conference room and stared at his hands.

He drove home in silence. Didn't turn on the radio. Didn't call anyone.

Lilith was in the penthouse when he arrived. She looked up from her phone.

"How did it go?" she asked.

He walked past her into the bedroom and closed the door.

He didn't speak to her that night.

Jennifer Stephens opened her email at 11 p.m. and stared at the message thread.

It had come through the management portal she controlled—a backend system that routed communications between talent, PR firms, and legal teams. Most managers never looked at the raw data. Jennifer had been in the business long enough to know that the raw data was where the truth lived.

The subject line read: BURKE MATTER — PHASE 2 IMPLEMENTATION.

She clicked.

The messages were clinical. Transactional. No emotion. Just directives.

*Fabricate text message screenshots using stock templates. Ensure metadata appears authentic.*

*Contact TMZ, Page Six, and Daily Mail. Offer exclusive photos. Standard rates.*

*File anonymous complaints with Manhattan Presbyterian ethics board. Use VPN. Rotate IP addresses.*

*Mobilize fan accounts. Hashtag coordination begins 6 a.m. EST.*

Lilith's name appeared in the CC line of every message.

Jennifer sat back in her chair.

She'd suspected. But suspecting and knowing were different countries.

She opened a new folder on her desktop. Titled it "Evidence." Began copying files.

Screenshots of the PR firm's directives. Invoices for media payments. The original, unmanipulated photos from the hospital. Internal memos discussing "narrative management."

She saved everything to a USB drive.

Then she stared at it.

Three days passed.

Every morning, Jennifer came into her office, sat at her desk, and looked at the drive sitting beside her keyboard.

Every morning, she did nothing.

On the fourth morning, she picked up her phone and made the call.

---

The coffee shop in the West Village was small. Quiet. The kind of place where people met to have conversations they didn't want overheard.

Jennifer arrived first. She didn't order anything. Just took a table in the back corner and waited.

Elowyn walked in at exactly 2 p.m.

She looked tired. Composed, but tired. She wore jeans and a sweater. No makeup. Hair pulled back.

She sat down across from Jennifer without preamble.

Jennifer placed the USB drive on the table between them.

"This contains proof that Lilith Vasquez orchestrated the entire smear campaign," Jennifer said. "Messages to her PR firm. Payment records. The original photos before they were edited. Everything."

Elowyn looked at the drive. Didn't touch it.

"Why are you giving this to me?" she asked.

Jennifer met her gaze. "Because I was there. Eight years ago. I watched Damian leave you. I said nothing. I did nothing. I told myself it wasn't my business."

She paused.

"I was wrong," Jennifer said quietly. "I've been quiet long enough."

Elowyn was silent for a long moment.

"There's something else you should know," Jennifer continued. "Damian has a savings account in your name. He opened it eight years ago. He's deposited a portion of every paycheck since. It's never been touched."

Elowyn's expression didn't change. But something flickered behind her eyes.

"How much?" she asked.

"A little over two million dollars."

Elowyn looked away. Out the window at the street.

Jennifer stood. "Do what you want with the information. But you deserve to have it."

She turned to leave.

"Jennifer," Elowyn said.

Jennifer stopped.

"Why now?" Elowyn asked. "Why not three days ago? Why not eight years ago?"

Jennifer looked back at her.

"Because courage isn't something you have," she said. "It's something you find when you can't live with yourself anymore."

She walked out of the coffee shop into the cold afternoon.

Behind her, Elowyn sat alone at the table.

She picked up the USB drive.

Held it in her scarred right hand.

And for the first time in eight years, she smiled.
