Chapter 5

The great hall had never looked more beautiful.

I had made sure of that. Candles in every sconce, silver on every table, the old Ironveil banners hung fresh from the beams. Two hundred wolves in their finest. Alpha Corwin of Blackpine at the second table with his mate. Alpha Renner of Ironroot beside him. The elders of the western circle in their long grey robes, seated with the honor Maxine had insisted on and I had personally arranged.

I wore silver.

The dress was simple. Long sleeves, a high neck that covered the mark, a skirt that moved like water when I walked. I had chosen it three weeks ago. I had known, even then, what color I wanted the room to remember me in.

Easton sat at the head table with his hand curled loosely around a wine glass, telling Alpha Corwin a story about the eastern reaches he had never seen. He laughed at the right moments. He tilted the glass at the right angle. He was, as he had always been, effortlessly persuasive to people who had already decided to believe him.

I rested my fingertips on his forearm and smiled up at him whenever the room glanced our way.

Across the hall, the clock above the western arch read seven fifty-eight.

My wolf paced.

She had been pacing all day, low and restless behind my sternum, and I had learned in the last three weeks to breathe around her. I let her move. I let the hollow behind my ribs fill with her weight. I did not press my fingers to the mark. I did not need to.

Eight o'clock.

I felt the northwest service door open before I heard it. A shift in the air. A draft of cold pine and river stone threading through the warm hall. No one else noticed. The visiting Alphas were laughing at something Easton had said. Maxine was leaning toward Elder Marta with a practiced smile.

I kept my eyes on Easton's face.

A small figure moved through the crowd near the northwest arch — dark hair, small shoulders, ducking between the legs of servers carrying trays. He was quick. He was determined. He had scented something he recognized and he was following it the way a pup follows any thread of comfort in a room full of strangers.

He broke free of the last knot of guests and ran.

Halfway across the hall a warrior turned to look. A woman near the elders' table set her wine down. The sound of two hundred conversations began to fray at the edges as, one by one, wolves noticed the child running toward the head table with his arms out.

He reached Easton's chair and wrapped both arms around Easton's leg.

"Daddy!"

The hall went silent.

Not a slow silence. Not a fading. A cliff. One breath the room was full of noise and the next there was only the sound of a single candle guttering somewhere near the west wall and the small, panting breaths of a child pressing his face into an Alpha's thigh.

Every eye in the room locked on Easton.

His jaw tightened. His hand froze mid-air above the wine glass. His eyes flicked once — toward the eastern doors, toward the exit that no longer existed for him — and then forced themselves back to the room.

And in that frozen beat, before anyone had drawn breath to speak —

She came.

My wolf slammed against the inside of my ribs with a force that was not metaphor. My whole body jolted. The wine in my glass trembled. I gripped the edge of the table with both hands and locked my knees under the skirt and I did not fall. I did not fall. She rose in me like a tide breaking a five-year seawall, and the hollow behind my sternum filled — filled — filled — until I could feel my pulse in my teeth.

My vision sharpened. The candles doubled in brightness. I could smell the pine on Neo's hair from thirty feet away.

I turned my head, one slow degree, and looked at Easton.

He was already looking at me.

Whatever he saw in my eyes in that instant — I know what he saw. I felt it. The silver ran through my irises like a struck match, one full flare, gone in less than a heartbeat.

His face went white.

No one else saw. Every other wolf in the room was staring at the child on his leg.

Then the hall erupted.

A visiting Alpha stood. A chair scraped. Voices rose all at once — What is this. Whose pup. Who let him in. Someone at the elders' table said Easton's name like a question. Warriors moved toward the northwest arch. I heard the sound of a struggle at the service door and Haley's voice, high and thin, cut short.

Maxine was already on her feet.

She moved with the brisk composure of a woman who had spent her life managing worse rooms than this. She raised one hand and the elders nearest her fell quiet out of sheer reflex.

"This pup," she said, her voice carrying, "has come into this hall making a claim on my son's bloodline. A claim I do not accept without proof."

The hall stilled again, listening.

"We will have a blood-scent lineage test," Maxine said. "Tonight. Before witnesses. If this child is Easton's, we will know it. If he is not — if this is a scheme by that woman at the door to extort the Alpha line — we will know that also."

Her eyes swept the visiting Alphas. Daring them to object.

None did.

Easton found his voice. It was rougher than he meant it to be.

"Yes," he said. "Yes. A test. Whatever my mother requires."

He pried Neo's arms off his leg without looking at the child. A servant took the pup. Neo did not cry. He looked around the hall with wide, confused eyes, searching for something familiar, and when his gaze passed over me it caught, and held, for the length of one breath.

I did not move.

I stood at the edge of the room with my hands folded in front of me and my face composed into the perfect stillness of a wife who did not yet understand what she was watching.

Silas Thorne was being sent for. I heard his name spoken twice.

My wolf settled into my chest with the heavy, satisfied weight of a creature that had finally been allowed into the room.

*Good girl,* I told her.

*Good girl,* she answered.
