Chapter 1

For five years, I played small.

I hid my real clothes in storage boxes. I wore twenty-dollar cotton shirts and drove an old, dented sedan. I let everyone believe I was just an ordinary girl living off a tiny inheritance. Devon never knew the truth. He didn’t know that my father was Fabian Webb, the man who owned half the casinos from Las Vegas to Monte Carlo. He didn’t know that every lucky investor who backed his tech company had been sent by me.

My father had made me a bet: if Devon stayed faithful to me for five full years, he would give us his blessing. If Devon failed, I would walk away forever.

Tonight was the final night. The five years were up.

I took out an emerald-green silk gown I hadn't touched since college. I put on gold earrings and bought an expensive bottle of vintage champagne. I felt a nervous flutter in my stomach. We had made it. I was going to tell him everything tonight.

I drove downtown to the nightclub where Devon was celebrating a new company milestone. The bass thudded through the brick walls of the alley. I stepped out of my car, holding the cold glass bottle by the neck, and walked toward the VIP entrance.

The heavy metal door pushed open.

Devon stumbled out into the cool night air. But he wasn’t alone.

His arm was wrapped tight around the waist of a woman. It was Makayla Shaw, a VIP hostess from the club. Her bare back was pressed against his chest. Her red lipstick was smeared across his white collar. Devon buried his face in her neck, laughing, his hands roaming over her hips.

I stood frozen under the streetlight.

My fingers went numb. The champagne bottle slipped from my hand.

It hit the pavement and shattered. Golden foam and sharp glass exploded over my shoes.

The loud crash echoed down the brick alley. Devon flinched, but he didn't look my way. He just pulled Makayla tighter against him, turned the corner toward the main street, and hailed a yellow cab. They climbed inside together. The door slammed.

They were gone.

I walked back to my car. My legs felt like lead. I sat in the driver’s seat with the engine off, staring at the dark dashboard. I didn't cry. My chest felt hollow, like someone had scooped out all my ribs.

I sat there for seven minutes in total silence.

Then I picked up my phone and dialed a private number.

The line connected on the second ring. My father didn’t say hello. He just waited on the other end, breathing softly.

"You were right, Dad," I whispered.

I hung up before he could say a word.

I didn't drive to my father’s estate. Instead, I drove straight to the Tribeca loft Devon and I shared. I needed to see it for myself. I needed the final blow to land so I would never doubt this moment again.

I unlocked the apartment door. The living room was dark, but a warm yellow light spilled from the open bedroom down the hall.

I walked quietly across the hardwood floor.

Makayla was sitting on my bed.

She was wearing my cream silk robe—the one I bought in Paris three years ago, before I started pretending to be poor. Her long, bare legs were tucked under her on my linen sheets. She had a face mask on, scrolling through her phone, looking completely relaxed. She looked like she owned the room.

She glanced up and saw me. She didn’t even startle. A slow, smug smile touched the corners of her mouth.

"Oh," Makayla said softly. "You're home early."

My vision went white. The blood roared in my ears.

I didn't yell. I didn't ask questions. My hand moved on its own. I grabbed a heavy crystal tumbler off the bedside table and threw it straight at her face.

Makayla screamed. The glass grazed the side of her forehead with a sharp crack before smashing against the headboard. A bright line of red opened above her eyebrow. Blood welled up and ran down her cheek.

"What the hell!" Devon roared from the doorway.

He barged in with his shirt half-unbuttoned. He saw the blood on Makayla’s face, and his eyes went wild with rage. He stepped directly in front of her, shielding her with his body.

Then he lunged forward and grabbed my right wrist.

He squeezed so hard my bones ground together. A sharp ache shot up my arm, but I didn't make a sound. I just looked at him.

"Are you insane?" Devon spat, his face inches from mine. "You're crazy! Look at what you did to her!"

"She's in my bed," I said. My voice was low and steady. "She's wearing my clothes."

"She is worth ten of you!" he sneered. His spit flecked my cheek. "You're pathetic, Ariah. You’ve always been pathetic. Look at you, throwing a tantrum like an unhinged child. You have nothing. No money, no status, no future. I built an entire company while you sat here doing nothing. You are completely replaceable."

He shoved my arm away violently.

"Get out," he barked, pointing toward the front door. "Get out of my apartment before I call the cops and have you thrown in a cell."

I looked at the blood dripping onto my carpet. I looked at my silk robe hanging off Makayla's shoulders. Then I looked at Devon.

I rubbed my bruised wrist where red marks were already turning dark.

I didn't yell. I didn't shed a single tear. I just turned my back on both of them, walked down the hallway, and walked out the door.
