"Are you still awake?" I asked, staring up at the shadows dancing across the bedroom ceiling.

Shawn shifted under the heavy duvet. "Barely."

"Do you remember the monsoon season five years ago?"

"The power went out across the entire city," he murmured.

"The night you ruined your only good suit," I added.

"You stood outside the hospital for two hours in the pouring rain."

"They locked the front doors."

"You banged on the glass until a security guard threatened to call the police."

"I wasn't going to leave you alone in that ward."

"You had a thermos of potato leek soup hidden in your coat."

He opened his eyes and turned to face me in the dark. "You were so pale, Care. I thought you were going to fade away right there in the ICU bed."

"The doctors told you I'd never be able to carry a child that same morning."

"And I told them to mind their own business." Shawn reached out, tucking a stray curl behind my ear. "I told you then, and I'll say it a million times more. I don't care about kids. I only care about you."

"Even now?" I pressed. "Now that you're the CEO of a Fortune 500 company?"

"My title means nothing." He propped himself up on one elbow. "Every reporter asks me about my biggest achievement. Do you know what I tell them?"

"You tell them it's marrying me," I whispered.

"Because it is." He leaned down and kissed my forehead. "You are my entire world, Caroline. Never doubt that."

I forced a smile, letting his warmth wash over me.

The strange text message I saw in the kitchen had to be a mistake.

It had to be.

I closed my eyes, but the words still floated behind my eyelids.

*John had so much fun today. He keeps asking when you're coming back.*

Maybe it was from a wrong number.

Maybe Shawn had a client named John.

Maybe the child at the amusement park had simply mistaken him for someone else.

There were a hundred explanations.

And only one explanation I refused to consider.

Shawn was cheating on me.

No.

My husband wasn't that kind of man.

He had spent twelve years proving that.

When we first met, Shawn wasn't the man whose face appeared on business magazines or whose company name flashed across the financial news every morning.

He was just Shawn.

A stubborn, ambitious man who always wore his sleeves rolled to his elbows and drank terrible black coffee because he thought sugar made him look weak.

I was the sick girl everyone told him to stay away from.

My mother had warned me.

His friends had warned him.

Even his father had once pulled him aside and told him that marrying me would mean giving up the chance to have a "normal" family.

Shawn had laughed.

I remembered that day so clearly.

We had been sitting in a small café near the university. I was holding a cup of tea with both hands because my fingers were trembling.

"You don't have to do this," I had whispered.

"Do what?"

"Stay."

He had looked at me as if I had said something ridiculous.

Then he had reached across the table and stolen the cookie from my plate.

"I've already decided."

"Decided what?"

"That you're stuck with me."

I had laughed so hard that I started coughing.

He had immediately pushed the tea toward me, panic flashing across his face.

"Slowly, Care."

"You're ridiculous."

"And you're marrying me."

"I haven't said yes."

"You will."

He had been right.

Three months later, he proposed beneath a sky full of fireworks.

There were no reporters.

No photographers.

No luxury restaurant.

Just the two of us standing on a quiet rooftop, with city lights stretching beneath our feet.

Shawn had gotten down on one knee.

His hands were shaking.

I remembered being surprised by that.

"The whole world thinks I'm fearless," he had said.

"I know."

"They're wrong."

He opened the ring box.

"I'm terrified of losing you."

My heart had broken open that night.

I said yes before he could even finish asking.

Years later, when his company finally went public, everyone expected him to change.

He didn't.

At least, that's what I thought.

He still called me before every important meeting.

He still sent flowers to the hospital whenever my health worsened.

He still remembered which medication made me nauseous and which one I could tolerate.

When my condition became worse, he had even turned down a major overseas expansion because he didn't want to leave me alone.

I remembered the headline from that time.

I reached out and touched his cheek.

He stirred.

"You're staring."

"I am."

"Why?"

"I was thinking about how lucky I am."

His eyes opened.

For a moment, something unreadable crossed his face.

Then he smiled.

"You are lucky."

I laughed softly. "So humble."

"I'm only stating facts."

He pulled me closer.

His heartbeat was steady against my cheek.

I listened to it and let the doubts disappear.

That was what love was supposed to be, wasn't it?

Trusting someone even when you were afraid.

Believing them even when the truth was easier to fear than to face.

Later that morning, Shawn insisted on making breakfast.

"You shouldn't be standing that long," I protested.

"I'm making toast."

"You nearly burned the kitchen the last time."

"It was three times."

He pointed a spatula at me. "You are very ungrateful for a woman being served breakfast by her handsome husband."

I smiled.

"Handsome?"

"Extremely."

"Good."

He leaned over and kissed my cheek.

For a moment, everything felt normal again.

Then his phone vibrated on the counter.

Shawn froze.

It was barely a second.

But I noticed.

He glanced at the screen and immediately turned the phone facedown.

"Work?" I asked.

"Yes."

I watched him for another second.

"Everything okay?"

"Of course."

He smiled too quickly.

Then his phone vibrated again.

This time, he picked it up and walked toward the balcony.

I couldn't hear what he said.

I only saw his back through the glass doors.

His shoulders were tense.

His voice was low.

And for some reason, my stomach tightened.

I forced myself to look away.

*Trust him.*

I repeated the words silently.

*Trust your husband.*

When he returned, I pretended nothing had happened.

"Are you working late tonight?" I asked.

He hesitated.

"Probably."

"Again?"

"There's a board meeting."

I nodded.

"Then I'll wait for you."

"You don't have to."

"I want to."

He stared at me.

For a moment, guilt flickered in his eyes.

Then he walked over and wrapped his arms around me.

"Don't wait up."

"I always do."

He kissed my forehead.

"Not tonight, Care."

I smiled.

"Okay."

He left shortly after.

I stood by the window and watched his car disappear down the driveway.

I told myself I wasn't worried.

I told myself the message meant nothing.

I told myself the child's voice meant nothing.

And I believed myself.

At least until noon.

My phone rang.

It was my doctor.

My latest test results were better than expected.

For the first time in months, I had a good day.

I wasn't dizzy.

My chest didn't hurt.

I could breathe without feeling like every breath was borrowed.

I looked at the lunch I'd prepared for Shawn.

A ridiculous thought suddenly entered my mind.

Maybe I'd surprise him.

Maybe I'd take lunch to his office.

Maybe I'd remind myself that the strange feeling in my chest was nothing but anxiety.

I changed into a simple dress.

I picked up the lunch box.

And before leaving, I looked at the wedding photograph on the mantel.

Shawn was smiling at me in it.

The same smile he had given me every day for twelve years.

I touched the glass.

"See you soon, husband."

I didn't know that within an hour, I would walk into his office.

And see the one thing I had spent my entire life believing Shawn would never do.
