Chapter 3

The restaurant in Ballard had exposed brick walls and Edison bulbs strung from the ceiling. My colleagues from the Michelin kitchen had reserved a long table near the back, the kind that forced everyone to lean in close to be heard. I arrived early. I always did.

Neil was already there, nursing a bourbon. He raised his glass when I walked in. 'To new beginnings.'

I touched my water glass to his. 'To new beginnings.'

The others trickled in over the next twenty minutes. Line cooks, prep staff, the pastry chef who'd taught me how to temper chocolate in humidity. They brought small gifts—a vintage kitchen towel, a jar of hand-harvested sea salt, a card signed by everyone in the kitchen. I opened each one carefully, thanked them, and meant it.

Lennon arrived forty minutes late.

He came through the door with that easy smile, the one that said he knew he was late but also knew he'd be forgiven. He wore the slim-cut jacket I'd helped him pick out last year, the one that made him look like he belonged in a jazz club. He slid into the seat beside me, arm draped across my shoulders, and kissed my cheek.

'Sorry, babe. Sound check ran long.'

I didn't correct him. I didn't mention that he hadn't had a gig tonight. I just nodded and turned back to the conversation.

Dinner came in waves. Appetizers, entrees, shared plates passed around the table. The pastry chef told a story about the time I'd saved a chocolate soufflé by pure instinct, adjusting the oven temperature mid-bake when the gauge malfunctioned. Everyone laughed. Lennon laughed too, even though he'd never heard the story before, even though he'd never once visited me at work.

Midway through the main course—a perfectly seared halibut with brown butter and capers—his phone buzzed on the table. He glanced at the screen. His expression shifted, just slightly. Concern. The kind he saved for emergencies.

He leaned close to my ear. 'Lylah's having a panic attack. I need to go check on her. Twenty minutes, tops.'

He stood, kissed my temple, and was gone before I could respond.

The table went quiet for a beat. Neil cleared his throat and raised his glass again. 'To Emery—who deserves better than cold fish.'

Everyone drank. I smiled and took a sip of water.

Twenty minutes became forty. Then an hour. Then two.

I stayed. I finished my halibut. I ordered dessert—a panna cotta with rhubarb compote that tasted like spring. I listened to stories, laughed at the right moments, hugged everyone as they left. By the time the last person said goodbye, the restaurant was nearly empty.

I pulled on my coat and walked outside. The night air was cool and damp, the kind that clung to your skin. I stood under the awning and waited.

Lennon's car pulled up two and a half hours after he'd left. He climbed out, phone still in his hand, and walked toward me with an apologetic smile.

'Sorry, babe. She was really spiraling. I couldn't just leave her like that.'

I didn't say anything. I opened the passenger door and got in.

The drive back to Alianna's apartment was quiet at first. Lennon turned on the radio—some indie station he liked—and hummed along under his breath. Then he glanced at me.

'You know, you kind of made things awkward back there by leaving early.'

I turned to look at him. He was focused on the road, one hand on the wheel, the other resting casually on the gearshift. He genuinely believed what he'd just said.

'I didn't leave early,' I said quietly. 'I stayed the entire evening.'

He frowned. 'What? No, I saw you getting your coat—'

'After everyone else had already left. After two and a half hours of you being gone.' My voice was calm. Steady. 'You left my goodbye dinner to comfort another woman. And you don't even understand why that's a problem.'

He opened his mouth to respond, but I kept going.

'That's what's ending us, Lennon. Not jealousy. Not insecurity. The fact that I have been telling you what I need for three years, and you have never once heard me.'

I pulled out my phone. I opened his contact and blocked his number. Then Instagram. Then Spotify. I deleted our shared playlists one by one while he watched, his knuckles whitening on the steering wheel.

'Em, what are you—'

'We're done.' I opened the car door before he'd even pulled to a full stop in front of Alianna's building. 'I'll have Brady pick up my things.'

I stepped out onto the sidewalk. The door was still open. He was staring at me, his face pale in the glow of the dashboard lights.

'Emery, wait—'

I closed the door and walked away.

I didn't look back. Not once.
