Chapter 1

The Crawford rooftop looked like money under string lights. I stood outside the terrace glass with my hand on the door handle and watched Phoenix through the reflection of downtown Brooklyn behind me. He was laughing. His head tipped back, his shoulders loose in that navy jacket I'd helped him pick out three months ago when he still slept on my couch and ate my leftovers and told me he'd spend the rest of his life being good to me.

I hadn't been invited. He'd gone unreachable for three days — no calls returned, no texts, just silence that tasted like distance — and I'd come here because I was tired of waiting for an explanation that never arrived. The address had been easy to find. Phoenix's cousin posted everything.

I should have knocked. I didn't. I stood there with the city lights behind me and listened.

"She's older," Phoenix said. His voice carried through the glass like he wanted it to. "Not by much. But enough that she's got this whole — I don't know — savior complex thing going. Like pulling me out of that garage made her my mother."

Someone laughed. A woman's voice, high and sharp. "Did she actually say that?"

"She doesn't have to." Phoenix swirled something amber in a glass. "It's in everything. The way she looks at me. The way she asks if I'm okay. Like I'm some project she's managing."

"You lived on her couch," a man said. I didn't recognize him. "What did you expect?"

Phoenix shrugged. The motion looked easy. "I was grateful. I still am. But gratitude isn't the same thing as — " He paused. Someone handed him a fresh drink. "It doesn't matter. The Emerald thing is happening. My uncle made it pretty clear that's the price of coming back."

"When?" the woman asked.

"Soon," Phoenix said. "Before the end of the year."

I let go of the handle. My hand didn't shake. I turned and walked back through the hall, past the elevator, down four flights of stairs because I didn't trust myself to stand still in an enclosed space. The cold air outside hit my face and I kept walking. Ten blocks. Fifteen. I didn't count. Biscuit was waiting when I got home. He pushed his head into my stomach and I sat on the floor and held him and didn't cry.

Two days later, Phoenix called. His voice was warm and easy, like nothing had happened. Maybe, to him, nothing had.

"Hey," he said. "Sorry I've been quiet. Family stuff. You know how it is."

I didn't. I said, "It's fine."

"I miss you," he said, and I believed that he believed it.

I made coffee while he talked. He told me about his uncle, about board meetings, about how exhausting it all was. I waited until he ran out of words. Then I asked, "Are you engaged to Emerald Dunn?"

Silence. Not long. Just long enough for him to choose the answer.

"It's complicated," he said finally. "It's a family arrangement. A merger. My uncle structured it before I even came back. It's got a timeline. I'm handling it."

"Handling it," I repeated.

"Oakley." His voice dropped. "You know what you are to me. This doesn't change that."

I looked at Biscuit. He was watching me from the couch, ears up. "Okay," I said.

"Okay?" Phoenix sounded relieved. "I'll come by tonight. We'll talk. I'll explain everything."

"Okay," I said again. I hung up before he could say anything else.

He didn't come by that night. Or the next. Within a week, the photos started showing up. Phoenix and Emerald at a charity dinner, his hand on the small of her back. Their names in a society column under the headline *Crawford Heir and Dunn Heiress Make It Official*. A gala photo where Emerald adjusted his lapel while he smiled down at her like she'd said something clever.

I pulled them up on my phone in my apartment. Biscuit's head was heavy in my lap. The radiator hissed. Outside, someone was yelling about a parking spot. I scrolled through all of them. I didn't send Phoenix a single text.

When he finally showed up at my door four days later, I let him in. He looked tired. Good tired. The kind that comes from being busy with things that matter.

"I'm sorry," he said, and kissed me before I could answer. "I know I've been absent. Let me make it up to you."

I made dinner. He stayed. We didn't talk about Emerald or the photos or the merger with a timeline. He was tender and present and indistinguishable from the man who'd promised me a rooftop. He fell asleep with his arm across my stomach.

In the morning, his phone buzzed on the nightstand. He was in the shower. I picked it up. The group chat was still open. I scrolled up. There were the jokes. The phrases. *Savior complex. Bank account full of expectations. Moving up.* And Phoenix's replies — not agreement, but not denial either. Just silence. Just letting it happen.

I put the phone back exactly where it was. I made coffee. I was dressed and composed by the time I heard him in the kitchen, humming something I didn't recognize.

"I have to run," he said, kissing my temple. "Breakfast with Emerald's father. I'll call you after."

"Okay," I said.

He left. I poured the coffee down the sink and sat on the floor with Biscuit and stared at the door he'd just closed. It didn't feel like anything. That was the worst part. It didn't feel like anything at all.
