Chapter 4

Chandler told me about San Diego on Monday morning. He was packing his laptop bag. He didn't look at me when he said it.

"Work conference," he said. "Two nights. Team-building stuff. Pretty boring."

"When do you leave?" I asked.

"Tomorrow."

I was making coffee. I kept my back to him. "Sounds fun."

"It won't be," he said. He zipped the bag. "I'll call you when I get there."

"Okay."

He kissed my cheek. He smelled like cologne. The expensive kind. The kind he only wore for important things.

The door closed behind him. I stood there. I counted to ten.

Then I texted Jessie.

**Me: San Diego conference. Tomorrow. Two nights.**

Her reply came in thirty seconds.

**Jessie: On it.**

---

She sent me the booking confirmation that afternoon. I was at my desk at work. My phone buzzed. I opened the message.

It was a screenshot. Hotel reservation. King suite. Two guests.

Chandler Taylor.

Novah Cruz.

Check-in: Tuesday. Check-out: Thursday.

I stared at the screen. My office was quiet. Someone laughed down the hall. The air conditioning hummed.

I saved the image. I opened my Evidence folder. I created a new subfolder. I labeled it: **San Diego.**

I dropped the screenshot inside.

Then I texted Jessie back.

**Me: Perfect.**

I set my phone down. I went back to work. I had a client presentation in an hour. I reviewed my slides. I practiced my pitch. I did not think about king suites or two guests or the way Chandler had smelled like expensive cologne.

I did my job. I did it well.

Roland stopped by my desk after the presentation. "That was excellent," he said.

"Thank you," I said.

He looked at me for a moment. Like he was trying to figure something out. Then he nodded and walked away.

I checked my phone. Chandler had texted.

**Chandler: Just landed. Hotel is nice. Miss you already.**

I typed back: **Miss you too.**

I hit send. I felt nothing.

---

The photo came Wednesday night.

I was sitting on the couch. I had my laptop open. I was organizing the evidence folder. Sorting everything by date. By type. By severity.

My phone buzzed. Unknown number.

I opened it.

The photo loaded slowly. Top to bottom. Like a curtain being pulled back.

A bathroom. White tile. Expensive fixtures. Steam everywhere.

And through the glass shower door, a silhouette. Broad shoulders. Unmistakable.

Chandler.

The angle was intimate. Close. The kind of photo you only take if you're in the room. If you're welcome there.

The caption appeared below.

**Your boyfriend really should lock the door 😏**

I stared at it. I didn't blink. I didn't move.

I looked at the time stamp. 8:47 p.m. He had texted me thirty minutes ago. *About to grab dinner. Call you after?*

I took a screenshot. I saved it. I opened the Evidence folder. I dropped it into the San Diego subfolder.

Then I looked at the message again. The unknown number. The smirking emoji. The casual cruelty of it.

She wanted me to react. She wanted me to call Chandler. To scream. To cry. To show up at the hotel and make a scene.

She wanted proof that I was breaking.

I didn't reply. Not a single character. Not a question mark. Not a period.

I closed the message. I blocked the number.

I went back to my laptop. I kept working.

The silence was the most terrifying thing I could have sent. If she were smart, she would know that.

But she wasn't smart. She was just cruel.

And cruel doesn't win. Not in the end.

---

I waited until ten o'clock. The apartment was dark. I could hear traffic outside. Distant sirens. The hum of the refrigerator.

I stood up. I walked to the bathroom. I closed the door. I locked it.

I turned on the shower. Hot. As hot as it would go.

Steam filled the room. I sat down on the floor. My back against the tub.

I pulled out my phone. I set a timer. Ten minutes.

Then I let it out.

I pressed my fist against my mouth. I sobbed. Hard. The kind of crying that comes from somewhere deep. Somewhere I had been keeping locked.

Five years. I gave him five years.

I left New York. I left my job. I left everything.

For this.

For hotel rooms with king suites. For matching tumblers. For a girl who sent me photos of my boyfriend in the shower and thought it was funny.

I cried until my chest hurt. Until my throat was raw. Until the timer went off.

Ten minutes. Exactly.

I stood up. I washed my face. Cold water. I looked at myself in the mirror. The glass was fogged. I wiped it with my hand.

My eyes were red. My face was blotchy.

I looked at myself. I whispered: "You will not let him see you break."

I said it again. Louder.

"You will not let him see you break."

I turned off the shower. I unlocked the door. I walked out.

I sat down at the table. I opened my laptop.

I opened the Evidence folder. I looked at everything. The photos. The receipts. The booking confirmations. The text messages Jessie had forwarded. The expense reports.

I created a new document. I started organizing.

I made categories. Timeline. Financial Fraud. Infidelity. Workplace Misconduct.

I worked for two hours. I didn't stop. I didn't think.

When I finished, I had a structure. A skeleton. A foundation.

I saved it. I backed it up. I closed the laptop.

Chandler called at midnight. I let it ring three times. Then I answered.

"Hey," I said. My voice was steady. Calm.

"Hey," he said. "Sorry I didn't call earlier. Dinner ran late."

"It's okay."

"How was your day?"

"Good," I said. "Really good. I'm working on a new project. It's coming together."

"That's great," he said. He sounded tired. "I miss you."

"Miss you too."

"I'll be home tomorrow night."

"I'll be here."

We hung up. I set my phone down.

I looked at the laptop. At the closed screen. At the evidence inside.

I smiled.

I was almost ready.
