After My Boyfriend Cheated with the Girl I Mentored Novel Cover

After My Boyfriend Cheated with the Girl I Mentored

It begins as an ordinary Tuesday night—a glass of Sancerre, a mindless scroll through Reddit from a Tribeca couch. Then a throwaway account's anonymous post slices through the quiet. The confession is unmistakable: her boyfriend and the young woman she once mentored. In that single moment, trust shatters, and a new, dangerous game ignites. This modern romance story explores the raw aftermath of betrayal, where heartbreak transforms into calculated moves and a night of quiet routine becomes the start of a ruthless reckoning.

Chapter 2

The restaurant was called Aurelius. Forty-second floor, private dining wing, floor-to-ceiling windows that turned Manhattan into something you could almost believe was yours. Tobias had booked it six weeks ago. He'd texted me the confirmation with three exclamation points.

I arrived at eight sharp.

Black dress, clean lines, nothing that required a second glance to understand. Hair back. No jewelry—deliberately, specifically, not a single piece. My bag was the one my mother left me. Soft black leather, no logo. I looked exactly like a woman who had nothing to prove.

Which is precisely what I wanted them to see.

The maître d' led me through the main room and down a short corridor to the private dining room. The city blazed through the glass behind the table. Tobias was already seated. He stood when he saw me, which he always did, a habit so automatic it had stopped meaning anything years ago.

Clare was sitting next to him.

I took that in without breaking stride. One step, two steps, three. My face did not change.

'Em.' Tobias crossed the room and kissed my cheek. His cologne was the one I'd bought him for his birthday. 'You look incredible.'

'Thank you,' I said.

He touched the small of my back—light, proprietary—and steered me toward the table. 'Clare wanted to celebrate with us tonight. Hope you don't mind.'

Clare stood. Her smile was enormous. The kind of smile that requires practice.

'Emerson.' She leaned in for a hug. Her perfume was something new. Expensive. I noticed the dress too—silk, well-cut, the kind of thing she couldn't have afforded two years ago. 'I hope it's okay that I crashed. I just thought, three years is such a milestone—'

'Of course,' I said warmly. 'I'm glad you're here.'

I meant it to land exactly the way it did: gracious, genuine, completely unreadable.

We sat. Tobias was across from me, Clare to his left. Under the table, in the half-second before I unfolded my napkin, I caught it—the quick sideways glance between them. Barely a second. The kind of look that belongs to people who share a secret they find delicious.

I filed it away. I smiled at the sommelier.

'Shall we do champagne?' I asked.

We did champagne.

The first course arrived—oysters, a delicate leek velouté, bread that steamed when you broke it. I asked Clare about her week. She talked about a campaign pitch she'd led, a client dinner, a rooftop event in Soho. She was animated. She kept touching her hair. Every few sentences she glanced at Tobias, just briefly, checking something I wasn't supposed to notice.

I noticed everything.

Tobias was performing attentiveness—asking me follow-up questions, laughing at the right moments, refilling my glass before I asked. He was very good at this. He had always been very good at this. Three years ago, that fluency had felt like intimacy. Now I could see the machinery underneath it.

We were halfway through the first course when he reached under the table.

He set the box on the white linen between us. Small. Square. Deep navy velvet, the kind that costs more than the box has any right to. He did it slowly, with the particular tenderness of a man who has rehearsed the gesture.

'Three years,' he said. His voice dropped into something soft. 'I wanted tonight to mean something.'

Across the table, Clare had gone very still. Her champagne flute was halfway to her mouth and she'd forgotten to finish lifting it. Her eyes were fixed on me with an attention she was trying to disguise as warmth.

Waiting. That was what she was doing. Waiting to watch me open it.

I looked at the box. Then I looked at Tobias. I let the silence sit for just a beat—long enough to feel like emotion, not long enough to be suspicious.

Then I reached out and picked it up.

The velvet was soft under my fingers. I turned it once, slowly, the way my mother used to turn pieces before she opened them. A habit I'd had since childhood. Tobias smiled. Clare's grip on her champagne stem tightened by one degree.

I opened the box.

The necklace was beautiful. At a glance. A pendant on a delicate chain, the stone catching the candlelight in that particular way stones do when they want to be believed.

I lifted it from the box by the chain. Let it hang between my fingers.

Tobias was watching my face. Clare was watching my face.

I tilted the pendant toward the nearest candle. Just slightly. The way you do when you're admiring something. The light moved across the surface of the stone.

I saw exactly what I expected to see.

I set it gently back in the box. I closed the lid with a soft, clean click.

'It's beautiful,' I said.

Tobias exhaled. Clare smiled and finally took her sip of champagne.

Neither of them noticed that I hadn't put it on.
