Chapter 2

I stared at the glowing blue dot on my phone screen. The car's GPS locator placed Carter's vehicle at the downtown Plaza Hotel.

Before I left the house, I checked the suit jacket he tossed over the armchair. The square bulge was a black velvet box. I brought it with me.

I didn't want to assume the worst. Maybe he got into an accident. Maybe he drank too much and needed a room.

I stepped off the elevator on the top floor. The hallway stretched out, silent and empty.

Suite 401. The Presidential Suite.

The heavy oak door wasn't fully latched. A sliver of yellow light spilled onto the carpet.

I pushed it open.

"Carter?" I called out, my voice shaking.

"Who is it?" Bettye's voice answered from the back room.

I rounded the corner into the bedroom. My legs turned to lead.

Carter sat on the edge of the king-sized mattress. His dress shirt was unbuttoned, hanging off his shoulders.

Bettye lay behind him. The hotel duvet barely covered her chest. Her hair spilled over the pillows in a messy tangle.

Carter's head snapped toward me. He didn't scramble away from her. He didn't rush to my side to explain.

Instead, he shifted his weight backward, positioning his body squarely in front of Bettye. He was protecting her.

"Tessa," he said, his tone sharp. "What are you doing here?"

"What am I doing here?" I asked. I pulled the black velvet box from my coat pocket and held it out. "I tracked the car's GPS. I thought you crashed. I thought you were bleeding in a ditch somewhere."

Carter stared at the box. His jaw tightened.

For a second, nobody spoke.

Then Bettye slowly sat up.

"Carter..." Her voice trembled. "Maybe I should leave."

I almost laughed.

She sounded frightened.

She looked anything but.

Her eyes were red, but there was a strange calmness behind them. She pulled the duvet higher around herself and glanced at me.

"I'm sorry, Tessa."

That was all.

Two words.

They somehow hurt more than seeing her in his bed.

I looked at Carter.

"Tell me she's lying."

His lips parted.

No answer.

"Tell me."

"Tessa, it's complicated."

My fingers tightened around the velvet box.

"Complicated?"

I stepped closer.

"You told me this afternoon that you didn't love her anymore."

Carter looked away.

"You told me she was your past."

Silence.

"You told me I was your future."

His eyes finally met mine.

There was guilt in them.

But there was no denial.

Something inside my chest cracked.

Not loudly.

Not dramatically.

Just enough for me to realize that the life I'd been protecting for years had already fallen apart.

Bettye lowered her gaze.

"I never wanted this to happen," she whispered.

I looked at her.

"You never wanted what to happen?"

She swallowed.

"For Carter to come back to me."

My stomach dropped.

Carter immediately turned toward her.

"Bettye."

She covered her mouth as if she'd accidentally revealed something.

But I knew.

I knew exactly what she was doing.

She wanted me to hear it.

She wanted me to know that this wasn't some meaningless mistake.

Carter hadn't simply gotten drunk.

He had chosen her.

Maybe not once.

Maybe not just tonight.

I looked at Carter again.

"How long?"

His expression changed.

"Tessa—"

"How long have you been seeing her?"

"That's not what happened."

"Then what happened?"

He stood.

"She came to me tonight. She was upset. I wanted to make sure she was okay."

I stared at him.

"And somehow making sure she was okay required a Presidential Suite?"

His face hardened.

"Don't make this uglier than it already is."

I almost couldn't believe what I was hearing.

I had driven through the city at two in the morning because I thought something had happened to him.

I had imagined hospital corridors.

Ambulances.

Blood.

I had imagined losing him.

And he was standing in front of another woman, annoyed that I had interrupted them.

I opened the velvet box.

Inside was a diamond ring.

The one I had secretly chosen three weeks ago.

The ring Carter had been planning to give me at our wedding rehearsal dinner.

At least, that's what I thought.

I looked down at it.

Then at him.

"Do you remember what you said to me this afternoon?"

Carter said nothing.

"You told me I was the only woman you would ever marry."

His expression flickered.

"You said Bettye was nothing but history."

I laughed bitterly.

"Apparently history has a bedroom."

"Tessa."

"Don't."

My voice broke.

I hated that.

I hated crying in front of him.

I hated that Bettye was watching me.

Most of all, I hated that some part of me was still waiting for Carter to run toward me.

To tell me this was all a terrible misunderstanding.

To take my hand.

To say my name the way he used to.

He didn't.

He stood beside Bettye.

Again.

Always beside her.

Bettye reached for his wrist.

Carter didn't pull away.

That tiny movement destroyed me more than anything else.

I slowly closed the ring box.

"Was tonight the first time?"

Carter's silence answered me.

I took a step backward.

"You're pathetic."

His eyes narrowed.

"Watch your words."

I stared at him.

"You're worried about my words?"

I held up the ring.

"This is what I came here with."

Then I threw the velvet box at his chest.

The box hit him and fell onto the carpet.

The diamond ring rolled out.

It stopped beside Bettye's bare foot.

She looked down at it.

For one brief second, I saw something in her eyes.

Satisfaction.

She had won,and she knew it.

Carter bent down and picked up the ring.

"Tessa, wait."

"No."

"Let me explain."

"You've had all night to explain."

He stepped toward me.

I stepped back.

For the first time in our relationship, I was afraid of him.

Not because I thought he would hurt me.

Because I knew he could hurt me without even touching me.

"Tessa, I made a mistake."

I looked at him.

"A mistake?"

He nodded.

"Yes."

I laughed through my tears.

"A mistake is forgetting my birthday."

He swallowed.

"A mistake is missing dinner."

I pointed toward the bed.

"This is a choice."

His face went pale.

Bettye suddenly began crying.

"Carter, please don't fight with her because of me."

I turned toward her.

"Stop pretending."

Her tears froze.

"You wanted this."

She shook her head.

"No."

"Then why did you come back?"

She looked at Carter.

Then back at me.

"I realized I still love him."

The room went silent.

Carter didn't correct her.

That was my answer.

I wiped my tears.

"Congratulations."

Carter's face tightened.

"Tessa."

"I hope you two are happy."

I turned toward the door.

He caught my wrist.

"Don't walk out like this."

I looked down at his hand.

"Let go."

"Tessa, please."

"Let go of me."

He released me.

I walked away.

Every step felt like I was tearing pieces of myself out of my chest.

When the elevator doors closed, I finally collapsed against the wall.

I pressed one hand over my mouth to stop the sob that escaped.

The elevator descended slowly.

Floor after floor.

And with every number that disappeared above me, one thought became clearer.

I wasn't going back.

Not tonight.

Not tomorrow.

Not ever.

When I reached the hotel lobby, dozens of camera flashes suddenly exploded around me.

I froze.

"Is that Tessa?"

"Was she cheated on?"

"Did Carter break off the engagement?"

"Where's Carter?"

Someone shouted my name.

I covered my face.

The cameras kept flashing.

Then my phone buzzed.

One notification.

Then another.

Then dozens.

I opened the first message.

A photograph of me leaving the hotel was already trending online.

Underneath it was a headline:

Carter Hayes Reunites With His First Love—Fiancée Catches Them Together.

My blood ran cold.

I hadn't told anyone.

Nobody should have known.

Then another post appeared.

A photo of Bettye crying.

The caption read:

She never wanted to destroy their relationship. She only wanted the man she loved back.

I stared at the screen in disbelief.

Then I saw the final sentence.

Sources close to Carter claim Tessa has been emotionally unstable for months.

My hands began to shake.

This wasn't an accident.

Someone had planned this.

And before I could process it, my phone rang.

It was my dance company's director.

I answered with trembling fingers.

"Tessa," she said quietly, "I'm sorry."

My heart sank.

"What happened?"

There was a long silence.

Then she said,

"You're being removed from tomorrow night's performance."

The call ended.

I stood alone beneath the hotel lights, surrounded by strangers and cameras.

I had come here carrying a diamond ring.

I left carrying nothing.

Not my fiancé.

Not my career.

Not even the dignity I thought I still had.

And somewhere upstairs, Carter was still with Bettye.

For the first time, I understood something terrifying.

Bettye hadn't just taken my man.

She was coming for my entire life.
