After My Alpha's Rejection, I Embraced Freedom
Chapter 2
The room seemed to tilt beneath my feet as Ryan's teeth sank into Brittany's neck. The ceremonial marking—my marking, the one that should have been mine alone—displayed for everyone to witness. The moonflowers' scent suddenly felt cloying, suffocating, as if each delicate bloom was mocking the wilted wolfsbane still tucked in my pocket.
I couldn't breathe. Couldn't think. Seven years of loyalty, of fighting and bleeding for this pack—for him—and this was how he repaid me?
Around me, pack members shifted uncomfortably, their eyes darting between Ryan's triumphant face and my frozen expression. Some looked away in shame. Others watched with morbid fascination, waiting for my reaction.
Lucas stepped closer to me, his presence solid and reassuring at my side. "Madison," he whispered, concern etched in his features. "Let's get you out of here."
But I couldn't move. My legs felt rooted to the floor as Ryan raised Brittany's hand, presenting her to the pack like a trophy.
"With Brittany as Luna," he announced, "the Silverfang Pack will enter a new era of prosperity and strength."
Silver snarled within me, her rage a living thing clawing at my insides. *He betrayed us. He's been betraying us.*
Suddenly, a wave of pure joy flooded the pack mind-link—a connection I rarely used but always remained open to as the Alpha's mate. Brittany's emotions poured through it, her ecstasy and triumph washing over everyone connected.
*I'm so happy to finally be acknowledged as Luna! Thank you all for witnessing this special moment!*
The words tumbled from my mind before I could stop them, an automatic response born from years of pack protocol: *Congratulations.*
The single word dropped into the mind-link like a stone into still water. The ripples were immediate. The entire den fell silent, all eyes turning to me. Brittany's smile faltered, her eyes widening in horror as she realized I had heard—that I hadn't known.
Ryan's head snapped toward me, his expression morphing from triumph to fury in an instant. The look confirmed everything—this wasn't a sudden decision. This had been happening behind my back, for how long I couldn't guess.
"Madison," he growled, his voice low and dangerous.
I backed away, bumping into pack members who quickly stepped aside. The whispers started again, louder now.
"She didn't know?"
"They've been together for three years..."
"How could she not have realized?"
Three years. The words hit me like a physical blow. Three years of lies while I patrolled borders, led hunting parties, and fought for territory. Three years of coming home to an empty bed, believing he was busy with Alpha duties.
Ryan's hand closed around my arm, his grip bruising. "Private den. Now," he hissed, dragging me away from the stunned crowd.
The moment the heavy oak door closed behind us, he rounded on me. "What the hell was that?"
"I think that's my question," I said, my voice surprisingly steady despite the hurricane raging inside me. "Three years, Ryan?"
"Don't act like the victim here," he snarled, pacing like a caged animal. "You knew this was coming. You had to know."
"How?" I demanded, my hands shaking. "When would I have known? When I was bleeding on the battlefield for your pack? When I was tracking enemies at dawn while you were—" I couldn't finish the sentence, the image too painful to voice.
"This is about the pack's future," he said, his voice shifting to something smoother, more calculated. "Brittany will make a suitable Luna. She understands pack politics, knows how to host the allied Alphas."
"And I don't?" The pain in my chest was becoming unbearable.
"You're a warrior, Madison. The best we have. But a Luna needs different qualities." He stepped closer, his Alpha tone emerging as he spoke his next words. "You will publicly support Brittany's position as Luna. You will show respect and deference to her at all times. In return..."
He reached out, his fingers trailing down my cheek in a gesture that once would have made my heart race but now made my skin crawl.
"In return, I'll consider allowing you to bear my heir. It's what you've always wanted, isn't it? A pup of your own?"
The manipulation was so blatant, so cruel, that something inside me snapped. Silver surged forward in my mind, her presence stronger than I'd ever felt before.
*He thinks he owns us,* she growled. *He thinks we'll accept scraps from his table while he gives everything to her.*
"You have until dawn to decide," Ryan said, turning away as if the matter was settled. "Meet me in the training yard with your answer. And Madison?" He looked back, his eyes cold. "Don't disappoint me."
I spent the night alone in the warriors' quarters, unable to return to the den I'd shared with Ryan for seven years. By the time dawn broke over the mountains, I hadn't slept a minute, but I had made my decision.
Ryan was waiting in the training yard, Brittany at his side, her neck proudly displaying his mark. Several pack members had gathered, sensing the coming confrontation.
"Madison," Ryan called, his voice carrying across the yard. "Approach and kneel before your Luna."
I walked forward slowly, feeling every eye on me. When I reached them, Ryan's Alpha tone lashed out, heavy with command.
"Kneel."
The word should have forced me down, should have bent my will to his as it had countless times before. But something was different now. Silver roared within me, her strength flowing through my veins like liquid fire.
"No," I said simply.
Ryan's expression contorted with shock and rage. "I said KNEEL!" he roared, his Alpha command hitting me with its full force.
My legs trembled but remained straight. I felt something awakening inside me, something ancient and powerful that had been dormant all these years. My vision sharpened, and I knew without seeing that my eyes were changing, flashing from their normal brown to a brilliant silver-gray.
"I will never kneel to either of you again," I said, my voice resonating with a power I didn't recognize. For the first time in my life, I saw fear flicker across Ryan's face as he took an involuntary step back.
Silver's voice was triumphant in my mind: *He senses it. The Alpha blood in our veins is finally awakening.*
