Chapter 2

The vault alarm woke the whole pack house at three in the morning.

I was already awake—I am always awake at three in the morning—so I was dressed and in the corridor before most wolves had found their slippers. Nathaniel Cross reached the vault first, then Cameron, then the rest of the pack spilling down the stairs in robes and confusion. I stood at the back of the crowd, near enough to hear, far enough to be forgotten.

The raw moonstone was gone. The one I'd catalogued myself four months ago—a stone the size of a fist, veined with silver threads so rare I'd written three pages of notes on it alone. I remembered exactly where it had sat on the third shelf, wrapped in blue cloth, logged under my own careful hand.

"The vault wasn't forced," Nathaniel said, holding up the lock. "Whoever took it had a key."

Cleo stood beside Cameron, one hand pressed to her collarbone, her eyes wide with practiced alarm. "Morrison had vault access this week," she said softly, like she hated to say it. "His patrol rotation put him here alone Tuesday night. I only mention it because—" she paused, letting the silence do her work for her, "—because I don't want to believe it either."

I felt something cold settle into my stomach. I knew Morrison's schedule as well as I knew my own. I knew the vault inventory better than anyone alive. I could have told them in five minutes that the shelf tags didn't match Cleo's timeline, that the cloth wrapping was folded wrong for how Morrison always folded things, meticulous and squared, not crumpled the way I'd seen it that morning.

No one asked me.

Cameron's voice cracked through the hall like a whip. "Morrison. Front and center."

The old Beta stepped forward from the crowd, spine straight, face unreadable. He had served three Alphas before Cameron was born. He said nothing.

"Did you take the stone?"

"No, Alpha."

"You had access. You had motive—" Cameron didn't even finish the sentence, didn't say what motive, because there wasn't one, because Cleo had built a house out of nothing but proximity and suspicion and the specific gravity of her own performed grief.

"I want an investigation," Morrison said quietly. "I've served this pack forty years. I'm owed that much."

Cameron's aura rolled out across the hall, pressing down on every wolf in the room, thick as pine smoke, heavy as thunder before it breaks. I felt it against my skin even standing at the back. Morrison's knees buckled under the weight of it—not because he wanted to kneel, but because an Alpha tone at full force doesn't ask.

"You're owed nothing," Cameron said. "You're stripped of your rank, effective now. You have until nightfall to leave Silverfang territory."

The hall was silent except for the low hum of the alarm, still blinking red above the vault door.

Morrison rose. Slowly, with the dignity of a man who had decided, somewhere in that kneeling second, that this was the last thing Silverfang would ever take from him without a fight in his own heart, even if he gave none in his voice.

He walked toward the door. Toward me, because the door was behind where I stood.

As he passed, he paused. Barely a beat. His eyes found mine—not pleading, not asking for anything, just seeing me, the way he always had.

"Luna," he said. A single word. The only time anyone in this pack house had ever said it like it meant something.

He nodded once and walked out into the dark.

Something behind my eyes went out like a snuffed candle.

I stood there while the pack dispersed, while Cleo touched Cameron's arm and murmured something soft about how terrible this must be for everyone, while Cameron gripped the back of his neck and did not look at me once.

I went back to my workshop. I did not cut anything. I sat at my table until the sun rose, and for the first time in three years, I let myself think—clearly, deliberately—about every road out of Silverfang I had ever noticed. The service gate past the eastern tree line. The unmarked trail behind the healer's garden that led to the old logging road. The bus station forty minutes south, the one I'd seen once from a car window and never forgotten.

My wolf did not stir. Not once. She had gone somewhere quiet and I did not go looking for her.

By the end of the week, Nathaniel Cross wore Morrison's old pin on his collar, and my workshop hours had been "restructured" to accommodate Luna duties I hadn't been informed of. Commissions that once came directly to me now passed first through Cleo's new administrative office. The Gamma's wife stopped meeting my eyes in the hallway.

I absorbed it the way I absorbed everything—quietly, precisely, without a flicker on my face.

But the map in my mind kept growing. Every day, another line drawn. Another road remembered.
