Chapter 1

At exactly 8:14 on a Tuesday morning, the silver brand on my left shoulder burned beneath my wool sweater as I reached the Ironveil Pack gates.

The pain was a dull, thbbing ache I had lived with for seven years. I didn't stop. I kept my chin high and my steps even. The thick layer of wolfsbane balm on my skin masked my true scent, leaving only the flat, empty smell of a human.

Two sentries stepped out from the stone guardhouse, their hands resting on silver-lined batons.

"Pack business only," the taller one snapped, looking down at my faded jeans. "No wolfless strays."

I didn't flinch. I reached into my coat and shoved a sealed envelope hard against his chest. "Give this to Alpha Sebastian's healer. Tell him the donor he prayed for is here."

Ten minutes later, they marched me up the grand stairs of the main house. The scent of cedar hit me the second I crossed the threshold. For a heartbeat, my ribs squeezed tight. But beneath the cedar, I smelled something rotten and sour. Decay. His severed bond was eating his marrow from the inside.

I walked into his office.

Sebastian sat behind a massive dark oak desk. Seven years had carved sharp hollows into his face. His skin was pale grey, his eyes bloodshot, and his commanding aura flickered like a dying candle. A harsh, dry cough tore through his chest before he could speak.

He looked up. His green eyes swept over me and showed nothing. No shock. No memory. Just cold impatience. I was nobody to him.

"You're the blood match?" he rasped, his voice rough as gravel. "Healer Darian verified your sample. Name your price. Money? Pack land? Name it and let's get the transfusion started."

"I don't want your money," I said. My voice was steady, flat, and clinical.

I pulled a folded document from my pocket and laid it flat on his desk.

"Thirty days," I said. "You provide food and shelter for me and my six-year-old daughter. You live under the same roof. You eat breakfast and dinner with her. You attend her school events and act as her father."

Sebastian stared at me as if I had lost my mind. Then his jaw set, and his chest expanded.

*"Don't play games with me,"* he growled.

He threw his Alpha tone directly into my face. The heavy, suffocating weight rolled across the desk, meant to force me to my knees. It pressed against my skull, hot and bruising.

I didn't drop. I didn't even blink. I locked my knees, dug my nails into my palms, and held his glare. My wolf was dead; his command had nothing left to chain.

"Sign it, Alpha," I said, my voice dropping an octave. "Or keep your pride and let the rot drown your lungs by Sunday. Those are my terms."

The silence in the room stretched thin and brittle. He looked at the paper, then at me. His hands shook slightly from weakness as he grabbed a pen. He scrawled his name across the bottom line with a savage slash of black ink.

I reached out and took the paper before the ink was even dry. He had signed his own leash, and he didn't even know it.

I drove back to the cheap roadside motel on the edge of the territory.

Paislee was sitting cross-legged on the faded floral bedspread. She was holding Mud, her stuffed brown rabbit with the re-sewn left ear, whispering a quiet story into its fur.

"Pack your bag, sweetie," I said, kneeling by the bed. "We're moving into the big house for thirty days."

Paislee stopped. Her grey eyes, wide and solemn, fixed on mine. "Does the Alpha smell like my blanket?"

The breath caught in my throat. My heart gave an ugly, painful thud. I had never spoken Sebastian's name to her. I had never described him.

"All big pack houses smell similar," I answered carefully, keeping my face smooth as glass. "Like old pine and wood smoke."

She studied my eyes for three long seconds. She was only six, but she always knew when I was keeping secrets. Still, she just pulled Mud tight against her small chest and nodded. "Okay, Mama."

That night, after Paislee’s breathing turned soft and even, I unzipped my canvas go-bag in the dark. At the very bottom, wrapped in a scrap of cotton, was the cracked river stone Sebastian had handed me during a midnight run when we were teenagers.

I picked it up. It felt cold against my skin. I counted to three, feeling the phantom weight of what used to be hope. Then I buried it beneath my clothes and zipped the bag shut. I was done looking back.

The next afternoon, the heavy oak double doors of the Ironveil pack house swung open.

Paislee stepped into the grand foyer, her little sneakers squeaking against the polished marble floor. She tilted her head back, staring up at the vaulted ceilings, the crystal chandeliers, and the dark portraits lining the walls.

Heavy footsteps came down the curved staircase.

Sebastian appeared. He wore a crisp black shirt, but his posture was stiff, his jaw tight. Behind him, from the second-floor hallway, I could still hear the high, whining voice of Luella complaining about an afternoon migraine.

Paislee dropped Mud to her side. She took three hesitant steps forward and looked straight up at Sebastian. There was a bright, terrifying spark of hope in her eyes.

"Do you know how to braid hair?" she asked, her voice small and clear in the echoing hall.

Sebastian stopped at the bottom step. He looked down at her, caught off guard. His face was cold, distracted, and deeply uncomfortable. "No."

Paislee didn't shrink away. A shy, tiny smile touched her lips. "That's okay. I can teach you."

Sebastian's expression didn't soften. He gave a curt, formal nod. "The housekeeper will show you your rooms."

I stood just inside the heavy front doors, watching from the shadows. Behind my back, my fingers dug into the wooden doorframe until my nails split against the cedar. In the deep hollow of my chest, where my wolf Selene had slept in silver chains for seven years, there was only silence.

On the stairs above, the soft rustle of silk cut the quiet. Luella stepped out onto the landing, leaning against the polished banister, her sharp eyes fixing directly on my daughter.
