Chapter 1

The bond broke at exactly 9:47 p.m. on a Friday night, in front of two hundred witnesses.

I felt it the moment Greyson opened his mouth. The mark on my neck—the one I'd worn like a costume piece for twelve months—went cold first. Not painful. Just cold, like someone had pressed an ice cube to the skin and held it there.

"I, Greyson Miller, Alpha of the Ironveil Pack, reject you, Eleanor Bennett, as my mate and Luna."

His voice carried across the formal gathering hall. Every warrior, every ranked wolf, every pack member who'd shown up for what they thought was a routine ceremony heard it. The words landed clean and final. No hesitation. No regret in his tone.

I stood three feet in front of him and did not blink.

The cold spread. My mark went from ice to hollow—like a door closing on an empty room. And then, deep in my chest where I'd buried her under a year of scent-dampening herbs and deliberate suppression, my wolf slammed against my ribcage and screamed.

It was the first sound she'd made in months.

I locked my knees. Kept my face smooth. Let the scream stay inside where no one could hear it.

Greyson's jaw was clenched so hard I could see the muscle jump. He reeked of Lylah's scent—vanilla and something sharper, layered thick over his skin like she'd rubbed herself on every inch of him. Probably had. I'd written the playbook.

Behind him, Lylah stood with her hand already on his arm. Possessive. Smug. Her fingers curled into the fabric of his jacket like she was afraid he'd take it back.

She didn't need to worry. He wasn't taking anything back.

The gathered pack held their breath. Waiting for me to cry, maybe. Or beg. Or do whatever a rejected Luna was supposed to do when her mate spoke the words in public.

I smiled.

Not big. Just enough to make it clear I wasn't broken.

"Accepted," I said.

The hall went silent.

Greyson's eyes narrowed. His wolf was right there under his skin—I could see it in the way his shoulders tensed, the way his claws pressed against his palms. He looked like he wanted to take it back. Like he'd expected me to fight.

I turned to Callum Reid, Greyson's Beta, who stood off to the side with the severance accord on a wooden table. Two senior warriors flanked him. Witnesses.

"Let's finish this," I said.

Callum's face was carefully blank, but I caught the faint tightness around his eyes. He didn't like this. Didn't matter. He slid the document across the table.

I picked up the pen.

My wolf screamed again—louder this time, wretched and raw. The sound tore through my chest like claws. I felt the bond fray at the edges, unraveling thread by thread as I signed my name in clean, steady strokes.

Eleanor Bennett.

The mark on my neck went from hollow to nothing. Just skin. Just a scar that would fade in a week.

My wolf howled once more—and then went silent.

I set the pen down. Callum handed me a second document without a word. The lunar trust transfer. Margaret Miller's solicitor—a thin, nervous man in an expensive suit—stood beside him with a leather folder.

"Ms. Bennett," the solicitor said quietly. "The territorial hunting rights and resource agreements, as stipulated in the original contract. Signed and notarized."

I took the folder. Opened it. Scanned the first page.

Ironveil Pack Lunar Trust: Full Transfer of Rights to Eleanor Bennett, effective immediately upon severance.

I closed the folder. Looked at Greyson.

He was staring at me like he'd never seen me before. Like I was a stranger wearing his ex-mate's face.

"Thank you for your business," I said.

Then I turned and walked out of the pack house.

No one stopped me. No one said a word. I heard Lylah's voice rise behind me—something about "finally" and "new beginning"—but I didn't turn around.

I walked down the hall, through the front entrance, across the gravel drive. My car was parked at the edge of the property line. I got in. Set the folder on the passenger seat.

Started the engine.

My wolf was silent. Completely, utterly silent. I'd spent a year suppressing her, and now that the bond was gone, she'd just... stopped.

I catalogued the feeling. Noted it. Filed it away.

Then I drove to the neutral-territory bar where Andi and Sunny were waiting.

---

Andi had champagne open before I walked through the door.

"To the worst Luna in Ironveil history," she announced, holding her glass high. "Paid in full."

Sunny laughed and clinked her glass against Andi's. "You're a legend. You know that, right?"

I slid into the booth and accepted the glass they handed me. "I'm unemployed."

"You're rich," Andi corrected. "There's a difference."

Sunny was already typing on her phone, her thumbs moving fast. "I'm posting this. Just one sentence. Nothing specific."

"Sunny—"

"Too late." She hit send and grinned at me. "Six pack networks. It'll be everywhere by morning."

I should have been annoyed. I wasn't. For the first time in a year, I felt the tight knot in my chest loosen just slightly.

I raised my glass. "To freedom."

Andi and Sunny echoed it, and we drank.

My wolf stirred faintly. Not a howl. Just a flicker of warmth at the edges of the silence.

And then the door exploded inward.

Greyson stood in the entrance, four enforcers behind him. His Alpha aura flooded the room like a tidal wave—thick, oppressive, furious. Every wolf in the bar dropped to their knees. Glasses hit the floor. Someone whimpered.

I stayed in my seat.

Greyson's eyes locked on me. He crossed the room in three strides, grabbed my arm, and hauled me halfway out of the booth. His claws were out—just barely, pressing into my skin.

"Did you ever feel the bond?" he snarled. His voice was rough, shaking. "Even once?"

Andi stepped directly in front of his lead enforcer, champagne glass still in her hand. "She's busy," she said pleasantly.

Sunny dropped behind the bar.

I looked up at Greyson. Met his eyes. Opened my mouth—

And then a royal aura detonated.

It hit like a shockwave. The walls vibrated. The air pressure dropped. Greyson's enforcers collapsed to the floor, whimpering and clawing at their throats.

A man rose from the booth adjacent to ours. Tall. Dark-haired. His aura was so ancient, so absolute, that I felt my knees want to buckle—but they didn't.

He stepped over the collapsed enforcers like they were furniture.

Placed himself between me and Greyson.

And spoke in an Alpha tone that made the walls hum.

"Remove your hand from her," he said quietly, "or I invoke sovereign claim over every territory Ironveil holds."

Greyson's hand opened. He couldn't stop it. His body obeyed before his brain caught up.

I was free.

The man—Jensen Kael, I realized, the Lycan Prince—stood in the space between us. He didn't look at me. He looked at Greyson.

And Greyson, shaking with rage, could not move.

My wolf stirred again. Not a howl. Not a scream.

Something else.

I looked at Jensen Kael and said nothing.

He glanced at me once—just once—and his eyes held for half a second longer than necessary.

Then he turned back to Greyson. Waited.

And I realized, with the same cold clarity I'd used to sign the severance accord, that I was the only other person in the room still standing under a Lycan Prince's royal aura.

Jensen Kael noticed it too.
