Chapter 3

The dirt was cold under my palms.

I stayed on my knees for a long moment, breathing through what felt like a wound no one could see. My whole body registered it. Not pain in one place—pain everywhere. A tearing under my skin, in my chest, at the base of my skull. Like something had been pulled out through the mark on my neck and taken pieces of me with it on the way.

I pressed my hand to the mark. Cold. Dead. A raised scar and nothing behind it.

Inside me, my wolf did not answer. She had never really answered—not the way other wolves did—but this was different. This was a silence that felt permanent.

I closed my eyes. I counted one breath. Then another.

Then I stood.

My legs shook. I locked my knees and made them hold me. I let go of Wynter's hand, just for a second, and I looked up at the platform.

Jaxon had already turned away. His hand was reaching for Priscilla.

I opened my mouth.

My voice came out flat. Steady. Louder than I expected—the clearing was so quiet, and something in the shape of the words carried them across every torch and every face.

"By the blood-debt owed to me by the House of Cole, I claim safe passage."

Jaxon's shoulders went stiff. He froze mid-turn, his hand still half-extended toward Priscilla.

The murmur that ran through the crowd was different this time. Not shock. Recognition. These were old words. Every wolf in the clearing knew them.

"By the blood-debt sealed in silver and witnessed by the Moon," I said, keeping my voice level, "I invoke my right to walk free, with my child, without pursuit."

Beta Marcus moved.

I saw him from the corner of my eye—crossing the space between us in three long strides, his hand already reaching for my arm.

He never got there.

"Marcus."

Jacqueline's voice.

She stepped out of the crowd on the left side of the clearing, and every head turned. She was not dressed for ceremony. She wore a plain gray coat and her hair was pulled back, and she looked older than I had ever seen her look. But her bearing was still a Luna's bearing, and Marcus stopped like he had walked into a wall.

Jacqueline did not look at her son. She looked at me. Then she looked at the pack.

"The debt is real," she said. Her voice did not tremble. "Four years ago, Hadley Wells took silver claws across her back that were meant for me. I owe her my life. I confirm the debt before this pack and the Moon Goddess."

The silence that followed was the kind that presses on your ears.

Marcus's hand dropped to his side.

I looked up at Jaxon. His face had done something I had never seen it do before—it had lost its shape. Fury and confusion and something underneath both, something he would not name, all fighting for the same set of features.

He opened his mouth. Nothing came out.

I reached down and took Wynter's hand.

I had hidden the bag under the platform two hours before the ceremony. Nothing much—clothes for Wynter, the antidote kit, a little money, the herb pouch I never traveled without. I bent and pulled the strap over my shoulder, and I felt Wynter's small fingers tighten around mine.

I did not say goodbye to anyone. There was no one to say it to.

The crowd parted. Faster this time. Wolves stepping back from me the way you step back from something you cannot classify. I walked between them with my daughter at my side, and I did not look at their faces.

Behind me, someone said Jaxon's name. He did not answer.

We walked out of the torchlight and into the trees.

---

The first hour, I could still hear the howls behind us.

They were celebration howls at first—the pack sealing the new Luna's mark, giving voice to the ceremony I had been thrown out of. Then, sometime after midnight, the howls changed.

One voice rose above the others. Ragged. Wrong. A wolf howling like it had lost something and could not find it.

I did not stop walking.

Wynter did not ask questions. She matched my pace. When I slowed, she slowed. When I stumbled, her hand tightened. She had not spoken since the poisoning, and she did not speak now, but she was there, and her small warm palm inside mine was the only thing keeping me upright.

By dawn we had crossed into neutral territory. I sat Wynter down on a flat stone and pulled the antidote kit from my bag. My hands shook as I measured the dose. I drank it fast, felt the familiar bitter burn slide down my throat, and waited.

The suppression thinned. Not much. Just enough for the pain of the severed bond to sharpen into something clear and specific. I gasped once, pressed my hand to my chest, and made myself breathe through it.

Wynter watched me with those big dark eyes.

"I'm okay," I said.

She did not believe me. But she nodded.

We walked all that day and into the second night.

Something began to pull at me before I knew what it was. A direction. Not a thought—a direction. My feet kept choosing the path north-west, kept turning toward the deeper pines, kept moving even when my legs were shaking and my vision was going gray at the edges.

We reached the border markers of Silverveil at the second nightfall.

The air changed. Colder. Older. It smelled of pine and cold stone and something my bones recognized even though my mind did not. I stopped at the marker—a tall gray stone carved with a symbol I did not know—and I felt something inside me lean forward.

Then my legs gave out.

I went down on the frozen ground hard, my knees hitting first, then my palms. Wynter screamed. She grabbed my arm with both hands, pulling at me, calling my name over and over—the first sound she had made in days.

"Mama. Mama. Mama—"

I could not answer.

Something inside me was breaking open. Something the wolfsbane had held down my entire life. I felt it in my spine first, a pressure that was not pain but was close to it, and then in my ribs, and then everywhere.

Above the tree line, the full moon hung enormous and white.

And whatever had been sleeping in me my entire life began, at last, to wake up.
