Chapter 1

The mark on my collarbone went cold at 9:47 p.m., three minutes before the candles on the anniversary table started to gutter.

I was standing in the Alpha quarters in a green silk dress I'd bought to cover the chemical burns on my neck. I'd taken the scent-neutralizer two hours early so the welts would be down by the time Roman saw me. My skin still felt like it had been scrubbed with a wire brush. Roman's plate was getting cold. The seared lamb. The rosemary potatoes. The little brown bottle of his favorite stout, condensation pooling on the wood I'd polished that morning on my hands and knees.

Then the mind-link cracked open like a door someone forgot to lock.

It wasn't meant for me. I caught Zoe's laugh first — thin, breathy, satisfied. Then Roman's breathing, slow and close. And underneath it, something I had been waiting three years to feel and never had: the deep, humming resonance of a completed marking bond. A bond settling into place.

Not mine.

My wolf, the wolf Roman had told me a thousand times was barely there, slammed against the inside of my ribs. Once. Twice. A sound came out of my throat that wasn't a word.

I didn't blow out the candles. I just walked.

The Beta quarters were three corridors away. I'd cleaned every inch of those corridors. I knew which floorboards creaked. I avoided them on instinct, the way you avoid waking a sleeping animal.

The door wasn't locked.

Zoe was curled against Roman's chest on the leather couch, her dark hair spilling over his arm. The bite mark on her neck was fresh — pink at the edges, still glossy. Roman's hand sat on her shoulder with the unhurried weight of a man who had done this many times.

He looked up at me.

There was no shame in his face. Just a slow, narrow calculation, like a man counting bills.

Three years of burns. Three years of scrubbing my own scent off the walls of the house I lived in. Three years of believing him when he said his wolf would gag on me.

I turned around and walked toward the ceremonial hall.

---

The pack was already gathered when I came through the double doors. Two hundred faces, the wreath of white lilies above the platform, the same ceremonial stones Roman and I had stood on three years ago.

Roman entered behind me with Zoe on his arm. He didn't bother to put space between them.

My voice came out level. I didn't recognize it as mine.

"Explain the mark on her neck, Roman. In front of your pack."

A hush dropped over the hall like a sheet over furniture.

Roman's jaw set. He didn't look at me when he answered. He looked at the assembled pack, the way an Alpha looks at witnesses he intends to use.

His voice slid into full ceremonial tone. The Alpha resonance hit the walls.

"I, Roman Walker, Alpha of Ironveil, reject you, Harper Brooks, as my mate and Luna."

My spine arched before my brain caught up.

The bond didn't snap. It tore. It went through the center of me like a hand reaching into my chest and pulling something out by its roots. I felt the mark on my collarbone go from cold to empty, the way a room goes empty when a door closes. I felt heat between my legs. I looked down and saw blood spreading through green silk.

My knees hit the stones.

There was a sound I'd never heard before — a wet, tearing sound — and then a pain that wasn't mine alone. The pup. The little heartbeat I'd been listening to in the shower for three weeks. A boy. I had been going to tell Roman tonight. I had been going to say the word son over the lamb and the candles.

I reached for him through the mind-link.

*Roman. Roman, please —*

He lifted Zoe into his arms. He carried her past the platform without turning his head. His boots passed an inch from the blood pooling under me.

The link went silent like a phone going to voicemail.

---

Elara Voss worked on me until sunrise. She wouldn't meet my eyes. When she finally spoke, her voice was professional and small.

"The pup is gone. The hemorrhage tore the lining. You won't carry again."

She started to leave.

"Elara."

She stopped at the door.

"The neutralizers," I said. My throat felt scraped raw. "Were they medical. Or were they his orders."

She didn't turn around. The pause stretched long enough to answer me.

I let her go.

The second the door clicked shut I swung my legs over the edge of the bed. The room tilted. I caught the rail and waited it out. Then I walked, barefoot, down the back stairs to the Luna's safe. It opened to the residual bond signature still humming faintly in my blood — a leash Roman had forgotten to cut.

The ledgers were exactly where I'd watched him hide them.

My hands shook. I photographed every page anyway. Forty-seven pages. Pack debts he'd buried from the council. Off-book payments. Names of three Alphas he'd been blackmailing.

I opened my contacts and found the number I had saved at eighteen and never once called.

**Nash Caeloran.**

I typed two lines.

*I have something you've wanted for a decade. Tell me where to meet you.*

I hit send.
