Chapter 2

The Alpha quarters smelled like him. Three years of that scent — cedar and leather and something sharp underneath, like steel left out in the rain. I used to think it was comforting. Now it just smelled like a place I'd scrubbed on my knees while he told me I wasn't enough.

I stood in the doorway with a glass bottle in each hand. Concentrated wolfsbane oil. The kind the healers used for training exercises, diluted to almost nothing. Undiluted, it wouldn't kill a wolf. It would just make every surface burn like acid on their senses. Make the air itself feel wrong.

I'd bought six bottles from a human apothecary two towns over. Paid cash. The woman behind the counter had asked what I needed it for, and I'd smiled and said pest control.

She wasn't wrong.

I moved through the room the way I always had — efficient, invisible, precise. I knew this space better than Roman did. I'd maintained it. Aired it. Polished the floorboards until they gleamed. He'd never once asked how I knew which wood oil to use or how often the ventilation filters needed changing. He'd just expected it done.

Now I used every bit of that knowledge.

I started with the bed. Poured the oil into the seams of the mattress, into the pillows, into the folded edge of the duvet he liked pulled tight across the corners. I moved to the ventilation ducts — the intake grate above the desk, the return vent near the closet. I unscrewed the covers with a flathead I'd taken from the utility drawer downstairs. Poured the oil directly into the ductwork. It would spread through the system for weeks. Every room connected to this wing would carry traces of it.

The closet was next. Roman's ceremonial coat hung in the center, the one he wore for pack gatherings and tribunal appearances. Custom-tailored. Ironveil's crest embroidered on the back in silver thread. I'd been the one to take it to the tailor for adjustments last spring.

I lifted it off the hanger and laid it flat on the floor. Then I poured oil into the lining, into the seams, into the collar he'd rest against his neck. I folded it carefully and hung it back exactly where it had been.

He wouldn't know until he put it on. Until his wolf tried to surface and recoiled.

I worked through the drawers. The undersides. The desk where he kept his schedules and his files. I didn't rush. There was no one to interrupt me. Roman was in the Beta quarters with Zoe, and the rest of the pack knew better than to enter the Alpha's private rooms without permission.

I'd always had permission. I'd always been invisible here.

When the bottles were empty, I set them on the desk in a neat row. Then I pulled the rejection acceptance document from my bag. The form every rejected mate was required to sign to complete the bond severance. It made the rejection legally final. Cleared both parties for future bonds.

I laid it on his pillow.

Blank. Unsigned. Untouched.

He wanted me gone. He could have that. But I wasn't giving him closure. Not yet.

I walked out the way I'd come in, barefoot, silent, the same way I'd walked these halls for three years. No one saw me. No one ever had.

---

The diner was called Marlowe's. It sat on the border between Ironveil's land and the human town, a squat brick building with a gravel lot and a neon sign that buzzed in the dark. I'd chosen it because it had no pack affiliation. No hierarchy. Just booths and coffee and the kind of fluorescent lighting that made everyone look tired.

I got there first. Sat in the back corner booth with my spine to the wall and my hands flat on the table. The waitress brought me water I didn't drink. My stomach was still a knot of cramping pain from the hemorrhage, and I hadn't been able to eat since the ceremony. But I needed to look functional. Needed to sit upright and speak clearly and not let anyone see how much of me was held together with nothing but spite.

Nash Caeloran walked in at exactly 6:00 a.m.

I recognized him immediately, even though I'd only seen him once since we were eighteen. He was taller than I remembered. Broader. He moved the way Lycan royalty moved — unhurried, certain, taking up space without asking permission. His hair was dark, cut short, and his eyes were the pale gold that marked Lycan bloodlines. He wore a black jacket and jeans, nothing ceremonial, but the power came off him anyway. The diner went quiet when he entered. Not because anyone recognized him. Just because some part of every wolf in the room felt it.

He slid into the booth across from me without a word.

I pulled the folder from my bag and set it on the table between us. Forty-seven pages. Every debt Roman had buried. Every bribe. Every off-book payment to Alphas who should've reported him to the council years ago.

"This is everything you need to dismantle Ironveil's charter through legal channels," I said. My voice came out steady. Flat. "I want sanctuary in Lycan territory while I recover. Not protection. Not a favor. A business arrangement."

Nash didn't reach for the folder. He looked at me instead, and something in his expression shifted — not pity, not sympathy, something quieter and harder to name.

"How bad is it," he said.

I didn't flinch. "The bond severance triggered a hemorrhage. I lost the pup. The healer says I won't carry again. Roman walked out while I was bleeding on the ceremonial platform. He didn't look back."

Nash's jaw tightened. He still didn't reach for the folder.

"You're offering me a decade of ammunition," he said quietly. "What do you want in return? Really."

"I told you. Sanctuary. And time."

"For what."

I met his eyes. "To make sure he loses everything."

Nash held my gaze for a long moment. Then he opened the folder and started reading.

He didn't speak while he read. Just turned pages, his expression unreadable, his focus absolute. I watched his hands. They were steady. Controlled. The hands of a man who'd spent years learning not to react.

When he reached the last page, he closed the folder and set it down.

"Agreed," he said.

He reached across the table to take the folder. Our hands brushed.

The pull hit me like a fist to the sternum. Deep. Warm. Undeniable. It came from the place where my wolf lived — the wolf Roman had told me was barely there, the wolf the neutralizers had buried for three years. She surged. Not a shift. Just a sudden, overwhelming presence, like someone turning on a light in a room I'd thought was empty.

I yanked my hand back.

Nash went very still. His eyes flashed gold — just for a second, just enough to know his wolf had felt it too.

I forced my breathing to steady. "I'll meet your people at the Lycan border tomorrow at dawn."

Nash nodded slowly. He didn't mention what had just happened. Didn't ask. He just picked up the folder and stood.

"My Beta will be there," he said. "His name is Soren. He'll get you settled."

He turned to leave. Then stopped. Looked back.

"Harper."

I looked up.

"You're not broken," he said quietly. "You never were."

He walked out before I could answer.

I sat there in the booth with my hands pressed flat to the table, feeling the place where our skin had touched still humming faintly, and tried very hard not to think about the fact that my wolf — my silent, dormant, supposedly defective wolf — had just woken up for the first time in three years.

Not for Roman.

For him.
