Chapter 2

I crossed the Silvercrest border on adrenaline and spite.

The ground under my feet was the same dirt, the same roots, the same stones that had been under me five minutes ago. But the air shifted. The boundary wards of Ironvale faded behind me, and I felt their absence like pressure lifting off my skull. I did not stop walking. My legs were shaking, my neck was still bleeding, and the hollow space in my chest where the bond had lived was screaming at me to lie down and stop moving. I ignored it.

I had survived three years of being invisible. I could survive one more night.

The underbrush thickened as I moved deeper into unclaimed territory. Branches caught at my ceremonial dress—white silk now streaked with mud and blood—and I did not bother pulling them free. I just kept moving forward. One foot, then the other. My vision was narrowing at the edges, grey creeping in from the sides, but I did not let myself stop.

Then my legs gave out.

I went down hard, my knees hitting the ground first, then my hands. The impact jarred through my wrists. I stayed there on all fours, breathing in short gasps that tasted like copper and dirt. My body was done. It had carried me this far and now it was simply done.

I pressed my forehead against the ground and waited for the grey to take over completely.

It didn't.

Instead, I heard footsteps.

Slow, deliberate, coming from my left. Not running. Not hunting. Just walking, like whoever it was had all the time in the world and knew exactly where I was. I lifted my head and tried to push myself upright, but my arms were shaking too hard.

The footsteps stopped.

I looked up.

A man stood ten feet away, half in shadow, half in the first grey light of dawn. Tall. Broad-shouldered. His posture was too still, too controlled—Alpha. My wolf was gone, but my body still recognized the shape of authority when it was standing over me.

He took a step forward.

I moved without thinking. My hand shot out, nails raking across his outstretched palm. I felt skin split under my fingers, felt the warm slick of his blood, and I snarled—not a human sound, not a wolf sound, something in between that came from a place deeper than my throat.

"Don't touch me."

He stopped.

He did not command. He did not use Alpha tone. He did not grab my wrist or tell me to calm down or do any of the things Diego would have done. He just stepped back, one clean movement, and held up both hands where I could see them.

"I'm not going to hurt you," he said.

His voice was quiet. Steady. It did not have the sharp edge of someone trying to prove dominance. It was just a statement, delivered like a fact I could choose to believe or not.

I stayed on the ground, breathing hard, my hand still raised between us.

He lowered his right hand slowly and turned it so the sigil ring caught the light. The crest was small, engraved in silver, but I saw it clearly: a crescent moon over two crossed lines, identical to the one on the pendant Diego had ripped from my throat.

I stared at it.

My voice came out rough. "Why does your sigil match my pendant."

It was not a question. It was an accusation.

He looked at me for a long moment, and I saw something shift in his expression—not surprise, but recognition. Like he had been waiting for someone to ask that question and had not expected it to be me.

"I don't have the full answer," he said. "But I know someone who might."

I did not move. My hand was still raised, my nails still red with his blood, and I was waiting for the part where he told me what I owed him for the information.

He did not.

Instead, he said, "Silvercrest territory is half a mile east. We have a Healer. You need medical attention."

"I'm fine."

"You're bleeding."

"I said I'm fine."

He was quiet for a moment. Then he crouched down, not coming closer, just lowering himself so we were at eye level. His gaze was steady, and I hated that I could not read it.

"You can walk through the gate on your own feet," he said. "Or I can leave you here. Your choice."

It was the first time in three years someone had offered me a choice and meant it.

I looked at the sigil ring again. At the crest that matched the pendant I no longer had. At the man who had not pressed, had not commanded, had not touched me after I told him not to.

I pushed myself upright. My legs were shaking, my dress was ruined, and my neck was still bleeding, but I stood.

"I walk," I said.

He nodded once and stood. He did not offer his hand. He turned and started walking east, and after a moment, I followed.

We walked in silence. The grey light of dawn was turning gold at the edges, and I could see Silvercrest territory ahead—tall pines, a stone gate, the faint outline of buildings beyond. My legs were barely holding me, but I kept moving.

When we reached the gate, he stopped and looked back at me.

"My name is Alex Bailey," he said. "Lycan Prince of Silvercrest."

Lycan Prince. The words should have meant something, but my brain was too tired to process what. I just nodded.

"Liv Sanders," I said. Then, because it was the only truth I had left, I added, "Rogue."

He held my gaze for a moment, and I saw something in his expression I could not name. It was not pity. It was something else.

"Not here," he said quietly.

Then he pushed the gate open and stepped aside.

I walked through on my own feet.

---

The Healer's room smelled like antiseptic and dried herbs. I sat on the examination table while Elena Cross—a woman with grey-streaked hair and hands that moved with surgical precision—cataloged every injury on my body.

The bond-severance wounds. The burned mark site. The scalded claw marks on my neck from Brianna's assault.

She did not ask how it happened. She just documented it, her pen moving across the page in quick, efficient strokes.

When she finished, she set the clipboard down and looked at me.

"The wounds are survivable," she said. Her tone was clinical, matter-of-fact. "The bond-severance damage will take time to heal, but it will heal."

I nodded. My throat was too tight to speak.

Elena picked up a jar of salve and began applying it to the claw marks on my neck. Her touch was firm but not unkind.

"Can it be reversed?" I asked.

She paused, her hand stilling against my skin.

"The bond?"

"The damage."

Elena was quiet for a moment. Then she set the jar down and met my eyes.

"The damage to you is not the kind that should concern you," she said. "The damage to the wolf who initiated the severance is another matter entirely."

I stared at her.

"What do you mean?"

"A bond is a biological connection," Elena said. "When it's severed without mutual consent, the wolf who breaks it carries the cost. The rot starts small. But it spreads."

She picked up the jar again and resumed her work, her voice steady.

"I've seen it twice in my career. Both times, the Alpha who forced the severance lost their wolf within a year."

I sat very still.

My thumb moved to my collarbone, searching for the pendant that was no longer there. My fingers found only skin, still tender from where the chain had snapped.

I lowered my hand.

"Good," I said quietly.

Elena glanced at me, but she did not comment. She simply finished bandaging my neck and stepped back.

"You'll need to rest," she said. "The guest quarters are down the hall. Alex has already arranged it."

I slid off the examination table, my legs steadier now, and walked to the door.

Before I left, I looked back at Elena.

"Thank you," I said.

She nodded once.

I stepped into the hallway and closed the door behind me.

The hollow space in my chest was still there. The bond was still gone. But for the first time since Diego had spoken the rejection vow, I felt something other than emptiness.

I felt the faint, buried heat of a coal that had not gone cold.
