Chapter 5

Silverfang's border was nothing like Ironridge's.

Ironridge's gate was a rusted iron arch with two Delta guards who checked credentials with the particular boredom of wolves who had never expected anything interesting to arrive. Silverfang's border was a checkpoint with six wolves in formation, a security scanner, and a Beta who was already walking toward our convoy before the lead vehicle had fully stopped.

Reid Ashford. I recognized him from Dominic's briefing files. Tall, sharp-eyed, the kind of face that processed information faster than it expressed it. He assessed the convoy in about four seconds, looked at me through the window for another two, and then opened the door himself.

"Your Highness." No warmth in it, no performance. Just the words, correctly delivered.

"Beta Reid," I said, and stepped out.

He escorted us through without ceremony. No tour, no pleasantries, no carefully staged display of Silverfang's power—though the power was visible enough in every structure we passed, every wolf we walked by who stood just slightly straighter as Reid moved through. He brought us directly to the war room, and when he opened that door, I understood immediately why Silverfang had held the continent's top position for fifteen years.

Maps covered every wall. Not decorative—working maps, annotated in three different inks, with territorial markers and patrol routes and resource notations I would have needed an hour to fully read. The table was wide and clear except for a single lamp. The chairs were plain. Nothing in this room was designed to impress. It was designed to think in.

I sat down, set my drafted terms on the table in front of me, and waited.

Kael entered four minutes later.

He was taller than I'd expected. Not the theatrical height of a man performing dominance—just the natural height of someone built to occupy space without trying. He moved the way his Beta did, with the unhurried certainty of a man who had never needed to rush because every room he entered had already adjusted to him before he arrived.

He glanced at the terms on the table. Then he looked at me.

Not at the royal escort standing at the door. Not at the Lycan King's seal on my documents. At me.

"You drafted these yourself," he said.

It wasn't a question.

"Yes," I said.

He pulled out the chair across from mine and sat down, and he began to read.

We worked through the terms clause by clause. He asked sharp questions—the kind that cut straight to the structural assumptions underneath the language, the kind that told me he'd already identified every place where the terms could be read two ways. I answered without hedging. When he pushed on the northern boundary allocation, I explained the reasoning in three sentences and didn't apologize for it. When he questioned the tribunal timeline, I laid out exactly why the speed mattered and what Arthur was doing with every hour of delay.

Reid stood at the side of the room and said nothing. At one point he made a small note in the margin of his own copy. I filed that away.

The last clause was the resource-sharing protocol. I reached across the table to indicate a specific boundary line on the map between us, and my hand was six inches from the paper when it hit me.

Dark cedar. Smoke underneath it, layered and deep, the kind of scent that didn't announce itself but simply arrived and kept arriving, filling in around every other thing in the room until there was nothing else.

I stopped mid-sentence.

Selene didn't surge. She detonated.

The recognition hit me so completely that my hand stayed suspended over the map, and for three full seconds I couldn't finish the sentence I'd started, couldn't move, couldn't do anything except process the absolute certainty pouring through me like something that had always been true and was only now being said out loud.

*Mate.*

Across the table, Kael made a sound.

Low. Reverent. A sound that came from somewhere beneath language, beneath decision, beneath the composed Alpha authority he wore like a second skin. A sound his wolf produced without asking him first.

His composure shifted. Not broke—shifted. Like a window with light moving behind it. Reid looked up from his notes and went very still.

Kael and I stared at each other across the war table. The alliance papers were between us. Neither of us moved.

"I was not expecting that," he said. His voice was quieter than it had been for the entire last hour.

"Neither was I," I said.

The silence lasted three seconds. Maybe four.

"The alliance stands regardless," Kael said.

"Yes," I said. "It does."

Neither of us looked away.

Reid set his pen down on the table with a small, precise click, and the sound of it was the only thing in the room.
