After My Alpha Rejected Me, His Wolf Died

Chapter 3

The emergency bell in the infirmary began to toll at seven on Wednesday evening.

Three sharp, clanging strokes. A code-black collapse.

I was at my workbench scraping dried belladonna root when the pack bond vibrated with frantic distress. It wasn’t a general call; it was a raw, maternal shriek blasting through the open link.

*Gabriel! Come to the medical wing! It’s your father—his lungs are seizing! Gabriel, answer me!*

Helena’s voice was ragged with terror. Beside me, Silas Greaves, the senior pack healer, sprinted past my open cellar door, his white coat flapping and his medical bag clattering against his hip. John Henderson’s heart had been brittle for months, scarred from an old rogue ambush.

Upstairs in the private suites, boots clicked across hardwood.

Gabriel didn’t run to the stairs. He was standing in front of his full-length mirror, adjusting the silk lapels of his charcoal suit. Milana stood behind him in an emerald slip dress, pinning a gold crest to his breast pocket. They were heading to the Ironclaw Pack’s banquet—Alpha Luka’s grand midwinter feast.

I heard Gabriel’s voice clearly through the heating grate in the floorboards.

"Mute the link, Milana," he muttered, brushing lint off his sleeve.

"Gabriel... shouldn’t you check on him?" she asked, her voice carrying that practiced, breathy hesitation.

"My mother is being dramatic," he snapped, his Alpha tone clipped and annoyed. "She’s never liked that I chose you over Gabrielle. This is just another pathetic ploy to keep me from closing the treaty with Luka tonight. If Gabrielle wanted to save him, she’d be up there. She’s probably orchestrating the whole scene just to humiliate me."

The front doors slammed. The heavy rumble of Gabriel’s black SUV tore out of the gravel driveway, heading north toward Ironclaw territory.

He didn't come back that night.

At 2:14 a.m., the heart monitor in the infirmary flatlined.

Former Alpha John Henderson died with his wife clutching his cooling hand and an exhausted senior healer closing his glazed eyes. Gabriel wasn't there. He was three drinks deep at Alpha Luka’s head table, laughing at Luka’s crude jokes while Milana fed him grapes from a silver platter.

When Gabriel’s SUV finally rolled into the courtyard at dawn, the Ashveil pack flag was already hanging at half-mast.

The silence that greeted him was absolute.

Fifty senior warriors stood in the misty yard. Men who had bled beside John Henderson in the border wars. Men who knew what loyalty meant. When Gabriel stepped out of the car, smelling of bourbon and cold perfume, not a single warrior touched his chest in salute.

They just stared at him. Their jaws were set, their eyes dead and cold.

Gabriel ordered three days of mandatory pack mourning, but the ritual felt hollow.

On the second afternoon, the pack gathered in the courtyard for the vigil. Gabriel stood by the ceremonial fire pit in a black coat, his face arranged in a mask of solemn grief. He kept a hand clamped over his eyes, playing the mourning son for anyone watching.

Milana clung to his elbow. She wore a black lace veil that looked expensive and delicate, dabbing at dry cheeks with a silk handkerchief. Every few minutes, she would rub Gabriel’s back, leaning into him so everyone could witness her quiet devotion.

From the shadow of the colonnade, I watched them.

Renna, a mid-ranking Delta warrior, stood three feet to my right. She was the one who had laughed the loudest when Gabriel first brought Milana into the packhouse. She had spent months whispering in the laundry room about my "barren, dried-up womb" and swooning over how sweet Milana was to the kitchen staff.

Now, Renna didn’t look sweet.

She stared at Gabriel’s hand. He was holding the torch to light the mourning pyre, and his wrist was trembling violently. Not with sorrow—his muscles were spasming. His black fur flickered in ugly, graying patches across his knuckles, sputtering like a damp wick before retreating under his skin. He couldn't even summon enough wolf heat to light the cedar branches cleanly; the Gamma had to step forward and spark the tinder for him.

Renna’s arms crossed over her leather chest-guard. Her mouth pulled into a hard, tight line. A cold knot of doubt had settled in her eyes, sharp and bitter. She looked at Gabriel, then looked down at Milana’s manicure resting on his trembling sleeve, and for the first time in four years, Renna didn't bow her head.

The illusion was cracking.

I left the vigil before the pyre burned down to ash. Down in the damp quiet of the lower clinic, I sorted fresh bundles of yarrow and fever-fern.

A soft rap sounded on the open doorframe.

"Luna Gabrielle."

I looked up. A tall, gray-haired man in a dark traveling cloak stood at the threshold. It was Healer Marcus, the chief medical delegate from the Thornmere Pack. They had sent a small envoy to pay formal respects to John Henderson.

"I am no longer the Luna, Marcus," I said calmly, setting down my shears. "You can use my name."

Marcus stepped inside, closing the door halfway. "A title is given by an Alpha, Gabrielle. Respect is earned through your hands. Everyone in the northern valley knows who kept this pack breathing."

He lowered his voice. Two years ago, Gabriel had thrown the Thornmere Alpha out of our council hall, sneering that a pack with less than a thousand wolves was "too small to matter." Gabriel had burned that bridge with a grin.

"Alpha Thornmere sent me with a message," Marcus murmured, his eyes steady on mine. "He knows the Ashveil territory is growing unstable. If things turn dangerous for you here... Thornmere’s southern gates are unlocked. Our infirmary has a seat waiting for you."

It was a generous offer. An easy escape.

I pressed two fingers against my inner wrist. Sixty beats per minute. Calm. Level.

I didn't need charity. I needed leverage.

"Give Alpha Thornmere my deepest thanks," I said, my voice smooth and measured. "And tell him I appreciate his kindness." I paused, meeting the older healer's eyes. "Tell me, Marcus. Is your border outpost still losing pups to the winter lung-rot?"

Marcus blinked, startled. "Yes. We’ve lost three litters since November. Nothing we brew can clear the phlegm."

"And the mountain drought killed off your fever-fern crop, didn't it?"

"It did," he admitted, leaning forward slightly. "How did you know that?"

I reached into the wooden crate beneath my bench and pulled out three dense, dried bundles of silver-veined fern.

"Fever-fern doesn't grow in the dry valleys," I said, sliding the bundles across the table toward him. "It grows wild on the south face of the ridge along the Ashveil border. Boil the root with winter-sage and honey. Two drops twice a day. The pups' lungs will clear within forty-eight hours."

Marcus stared at the herbs, then up at me, his eyes wide with profound respect.

"Take it," I said softly. "A gift for Alpha Thornmere. Tell him that when the time comes to redraw the northern borders, I will remember who offered me a door."

Marcus bowed his head—a deep, genuine bow reserved only for true leadership. He tucked the herbs into his cloak. "Thornmere will remember this, Gabrielle. We answer our debts."

He slipped out into the shadows, leaving me alone in the cellar.

The first stone was placed. Gabriel had stripped my crown, but he had forgotten that an Alpha only rules the land he can hold—and his grip was slipping faster every day.
