Chapter 1

At 9:42 on a Saturday night, Gabriel’s wolf tore past the banquet pavilion at full gallop, not a single hitch in his stride.

I stood by the stone railing in my green silk Luna gown, watching his gleaming black fur cut through the pine shadows. For four years, he couldn’t hold a shift for twenty minutes without his bones grinding and his breath rattling in his throat. He had blamed me for every second of it. He told the elders my barren womb was a curse that sapped his Alpha strength.

Yet tonight, he had been running through the mountain woods for two straight hours.

And riding on his back was Milana Foster.

The wind shifted toward the pavilion. Her scent hit me first—heavy sweet jasmine and female heat, completely burying my faint rosemary. Beside me, my mate mark went bone-cold against my collarbone. It didn’t throb with warmth or pack pride. It went slack and dead.

His wolf had never been sick. The mate bond had just been rejecting me from the start because his heart belonged to her.

Gabriel crossed the clearing and shifted back into human form as he reached the torchlight. He didn’t stumble. His chest rose and fell smoothly. Milana slipped off the rock ledge behind him, smoothing down an ivory ceremonial dress with silver lace trim along the bodice. I recognized the silk. It was a custom cut from the city boutique—ordered two weeks ago.

Gabriel stepped onto the raised dais. The whole pack watched in dead silence.

He didn't look at my face. He looked at my throat, right where his teeth had marked me on our bonding night.

"I, Gabriel Henderson, Alpha of the Ashveil Pack, reject you, Gabrielle, as my mate and Luna," he said.

His Alpha tone rolled across the stone floor, heavy and suffocating. It slammed into my chest, forcing my chin down. At the same second, the mark on my neck burned like freezing iron pressed into raw meat. The bond snapped shut, hollow and final, like a heavy oak door slamming inside an empty room.

The pain dropped me to my knees. My palms scraped against the stone.

Deep inside my ribcage, where my wolf had slept silent for twenty-two years, something shifted. It didn't whimper. It didn't cower. A low, jagged snarl vibrated against my lungs.

I swallowed the blood from my bitten lip and forced myself back to my feet. I didn't cry. I didn't ask him why.

Milana glided forward, her eyes bright with triumph. Gabriel pulled his wolf-fur cloak from his shoulders and draped the heavy black pelt over her. She buried her face in the fur, breathing in his scent, and cast a quick smirk over his shoulder at me.

"Gamma Thomas," Gabriel commanded without turning around. "Escort the former Luna off the dais. She moves to the lower quarters tonight."

Gamma Thomas stepped up and grabbed my left forearm, his grip bruising.

I didn't flinch. I pressed two fingers of my right hand flat against the pulse on the inside of my wrist. Sixty beats per minute. Steady.

"Take your hand off me, Thomas," I said quietly.

My voice was flat, but Thomas froze. Something in my eyes made him let go of my arm like he had touched hot metal. I turned my back on the dais, lifted the hem of my dress, and walked down the steps on my own.

By midnight, they had moved my few personal belongings to the basement room at the far end of the healer's wing. It was cold and smelled of dried wolfsbane, sulfur, and damp stone. A single iron cot sat against the wall.

I sat on the edge of the mattress and pulled my battered leather notebook from my coat pocket. The spine was split and held together by black thread.

I flipped past the last written page. The ink on it was barely dry: *Gabriel—daily morning dose: 15ml crushed winter-root, silver-moss extract to counter shift atrophy.*

I turned to a fresh, blank sheet.

I took out my pen and wrote down every single bridge Gabriel had burned over the last three years because he thought his Alpha aura was invincible:

*Alpha Luka, Ironclaw Pack—humiliated over disputed northern hunting borders.*

*The Lycan Council trade envoy—insulted and thrown out of the packhouse.*

*Elder Silas—threatened with exile for questioning pack war debts.*

I stared at the ink until it dried.

Then I stood up and walked to the wooden medicine cabinet against the far wall. Gabriel honestly believed his wolf had miraculously healed itself tonight. He thought Milana’s touch was what made him strong enough to run for two hours.

Inside the cabinet sat twelve sealed glass vials filled with dark amber liquid. It was the tonic I had spent four years brewing in secret, harvesting mountain herbs at dawn and burning my own skin over the distillation flames just to keep his joints from locking up during pack runs.

Without a dose every morning, the artificial strength in his blood would sour. His wolf would lock inside his bones before the week was out.

I grabbed the first vial and popped the cork.

I tipped it over the iron sink. The thick liquid slid down the drain with a faint, bitter hiss.

Then the second vial. The third. The fourth.

One by one, I emptied all twelve into the dark pipe until the cabinet was bare.

Just as the last glass clinked against the metal counter, boots crunched heavily on the gravel path outside my frosted cellar window.

"Pack your bags for the Ironclaw summit tomorrow morning, Milana," Gabriel’s voice drifted down through the glass, loud and smug. "Let every Alpha in the territory see who stands beside me."
